Available for auction is a rebuilt and complete, turn-key 1969 Type 616/40 flat-four engine. The engine number is 4095508 and came from a 1969 Porsche 912 coupe. The Type 616/40 flat-four originally displaced 1,582cc but has been fitted with a NPR big bore kit increasing displacement to 1720cc and bore and stroke to 86mm X 74mm. It features a three-piece crankcase, single camshaft, and pushrod valve-train.

The seller states he originally purchased the engine in 1994, rebuilt it in 2004-5, and enjoyed it in his Porsche 356A up until 2017. In 2015 he had found a more period correct replacement engine for his 356A and kept the 912 motor as a spare. In 2023, with the help of his mechanic, he refurbished the motor, replaced the distributor and tuned the carbs. The seller states the engine was rebuilt to as-new specs and is in excellent running condition. Please see the gallery for invoices and rebuild costs. The buyer is responsible for shipping, handling and transactional fees.

@ronn356 unfortunately did not make the ECH gig...Carrie and I have been making jaunts (or what we call SCOUTING ROUTING OUTINGS) to the north Georgia Appalachians in spare time to look at routes, locations for food, hotels, and as well bringing one or more of the filmmakers along who will be capturing this for the 2nd PUNTERS film in the series (our first event was all offroad with Porsche Cayennes and 911's that 'might' have experienced triple digits offroad on certain sections)...the 2024 event won't have those speeds done by 550 and 356 outlaws but the routes and the time/distance/gimmic rally portion will be entertaining to enthusiasts interested in more than clean cars and screws all turned in a direction...

@jcgoodlett2: if you were at the recent 356ECH, then we rubbed elbows. This motor would make that 550 fly! It would be a shame if it went to someone else; however, no one has yet bid enough to tempt me to go off reserve.

Welcome eveyone to the last day of my auction of this very nice Porsche 912 616/40 engine! If anything, it's been under-used, as I kept it for cruising in my 356, and only 6500 miles at that.
Knowledgable bidders will know the market price on these, and I've decided to discount it to below market, so bid strong and you might win it.
I'll be around today if you have a question!

  • ronn356 (seller) 7 months, 2 weeksago

@zollerm: According to those more in the know than me, the big bore kit probably added 5-10% to the gross Hp, which in the case of the 912, was rated at between 95 and 102. Lack of emissions equip meant that the engine didn't falter trying to carry that.
The effect of having almost twice the power of the Normal 60 Hp engine was dramatic, and the engine was identical in appearance to the 356, so I did not offend the Porsche gods, as the Maestro would say!

  • zollerm (registered bidder) 7 months, 2 weeksago

Without emissions, what is the HP? Thank you.

  • ronn356 (seller) 7 months, 2 weeksago

@993NA75, @craig912: thank you for your bids!

I neglected to mention in my previous update that the engine runs as fine or even better than when it was saddled with the emission-control technology of the day. Almost ALL of the 50 states in the U.S. no longer require one to put that stuff back on. Nevertheless, I have a box of emission-control parts that would help the next owner if they had to do that.

As you may have noticed, when I returned the engine's appearance to be a 912, I did not remount the smog controls or the heater tubes that festoon the stock 912. They are not needed, so why put them on? Instead, I placed what I had in a box for the next person to decide. There are also carb pre-heater and engine sheetmetal block-off plates installed, which can be easily removed. However, for most of us (in most of the U.S.), pre-heat is not needed. My vote is to leave the cover plates on.

Thanks for your bid, @Merlinst2! @jentex, thanks for your support. It's time that my baby goes to a new and caring home.

I began my Porsche 616 build by consulting with the master builder of the 1980s, Harry Pellow. He sold me some parts that I needed and gave me some very good advice: measure everything, watch your factory tolerances, and pair up reciprocating parts to statically balance the engine prior to assembly. I bought a copy of his books : The ABC's and 912's of Porsche Engines, as well as Secrets of the Inner Circle. Invaluable! And kept a copy of the factory manual for the Type 616 engine close by.
Since I was a member of the 356 Registry, I read the Forum posts because the 912 engine (616/40) was a hot topic and used by many who wanted more performance. I hired professional help through the 356 magazine listings and also used other members' recommendations for service providers.
For that reason I had Harry Bieker, the carburetor maven of the period, rebuild my Solex PII-40 split shaft carbs to factory spec. He did, and they still run great. I hired Tim Berardelli to go through my 912 heads and rebuild as needed. He did just that, and they still perform as expected. I sent the 912 counterbalanced crank to Walt at Competition Engineering to look it over and recondition if needed. He cleaned it up, scoped it for cracks (none), gave it the "ping" test to see if it rang true, and pronounced it good to use. The NPR 1720cc piston/cylinder kit was the standard of the day, and so we measured everything to make sure that all was copasetic before using it.
In the same manner we inspected all parts, reconditioned or rebuilt items that needed them, ordered new parts when required (such as gaskets), used the corrects sealants, and torqued everything to the factory manual that I kept close at hand.
Since I was going to use the engine in my 356 (2005), we parked the 912 engine sheet metal and installed 356 metal around the engine for use in that car. Later, when the engine was no longer used in the 356, I refitted the engine to run as a 12V 912, re-plated the brightwork, and installed the current 912 sheet metal with new and shiny fittings. Easy switcheroo.

Yes, I can assist. I am making a shipping box using the plans that Adam Wright laid out in an article on the Porsche356Registry.org, as he has lots of experience doing this and he ships worldwide. I plan to call local shippers about transport options and will have info on that for the winning bidder.

Greetings, everyone, and welcome to this auction of my 912 engine!
Although originally built by myself and my mechanic for use in my 356A, relevant items were switched out when it came time to return it to 912 engine configuration. The 912 engine sheetmetal, a 12-volt electrical system, and a resurfaced 912 flywheel helped complete this process. We also installed a newly-rebuilt 022 distributor that was curved to 912 operating specs. The carbs are stock Solex split-shafts, appropriate for a 1969 912 engine, and still function properly, as Harry Bieker had restored them.
Other well-known 356 Porsche service professionals had a hand in rebuilding this engine, with me starting by consulting with and buying parts from Harry Pellow, a.k.a. "the Maestro." I created a list of parts and services that went into this build, and they are part of the included documents.
As you can witness from watching the videos, what we created was a fine-running engine that has served me well since 2005. I no longer need the 912 engine, so it is time to pass it on to someone who would appreciate owning this one. For someone wanting to switch it back to a 356 configuration, that is quite easy to do, but for this auction, it's a 912!
I'll periodically check in to answer any comments or questions; please feel free to ask. Looking forward to your bidding!
