Available for auction is 3 1:12 scale GT40 diecast limited production models by GMP. The first model is a 1966 24hr of Lemans pole setting Ford GT40 Mark II car #3 driven by Gurney/Grant. The model is displayed in an acrylic case but repackaged in the original box as-new. Produced in 2002, the models were limited to 500 examples (#1201307). This model is numbered 97/ 500. The 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans marked a pivotal moment in motorsport history, showcasing an American manufacturer determined to challenge Ferrari’s supremacy. Ford brought its finest contender, the GT40 Mark II, along with an elite roster of drivers to vie for the World Manufacturers’ Championship title. Behind the wheel, Dan Gurney and Jerry Grant not only secured the pole position with the fastest lap but also seized the lead by the second lap, propelling Ford ahead in the early hours with astonishing speed. One can only imagine Enzo Ferrari’s frustration at seeing another iconic car—painted in vibrant red, yet not his own—dominate the track. Ford's legacy was cemented that year with a remarkable 1-2-3 finish, as the GT40 set a new standard for performance that competitors could only aspire to match.
The second is a 1967 Ford GT40 Mark IV, car #2, famously driven by legends McLaren and Donohue, which secured a remarkable 4th place finish at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. This exquisite GMP 1:12 scale diecast replica is a must-have for collectors. It has never been displayed and was carefully opened only for photography, then repackaged in its original box, maintaining an as-new condition. Produced in 2001, this limited-edition model is one of only 500 made, with this specific piece being #320 of 500 (#12074). Ford's relentless development led to significant advancements with the GT40, particularly under Senior Designer Roy Lunn, who focused on reducing weight. After the GT40's victory at Le Mans in 1966, Lunn initiated the J-car project, creating a lightweight chassis using bonded honeycomb aluminum that weighed just 86 pounds. Unfortunately, a tragic testing accident claimed the life of driver Ken Miles. The original GT40 Mark II struggled in the 1967 season, prompting Ford to enhance the J-car into the GT40 Mark IV, featuring a new body design. At the 1967 Le Mans, four Mark IVs, driven by racing legends like Mario Andretti and AJ Foyt, competed, with Gurney and Foyt clinching first place for the second consecutive year. After this event, Ford withdrew from motorsports, having proven its prowess by defeating Ferrari two years in a row.
The third is a 1969 Ford GT40 Gulf Livery #6, a GMP 1:12 scale diecast replica produced in 2002, limited to just 2,000 pieces (this is #923/2000) and displayed under an acrylic case, repackaged in its original box. The GT40 Mark I was a dominant force on the racing circuit, particularly after regulation changes allowed the small-block Ford variant to compete. Under the control of JW Automotive, the GT40 returned with a powerful 5-liter engine, winning multiple races, including the 1969 Le Mans, where legendary drivers Jacky Ickx and Jacky Oliver secured victory against strong competition from Porsche. The sale includes three acrylic display cases (19.5”x10”x7.5”) for showcasing the models.
