Available for auction is a factory-original Porsche “whale-tail” spoiler, removed from a 1987 930 Turbo. This iconic rear spoiler, first introduced in 1974, is constructed of fiberglass with steel supports and features a raised black rubber lip along with a black-finish grille. Designed to assist with rear downforce and enhance stability at high speeds, it also gives the car a more aggressive appearance.

Retaining its original latching mechanism, air duct, and rubber supports, this genuine Porsche part (#930512023.00) is finished in red, making it a perfect addition for restoration or upgrade projects. The buyer is responsible for shipping, shipping insurance, handling, and transactional fees. PCARMARKET is not responsible for anything lost or damaged during shipping.

This auction description could have been better. It requires some disambiguation...

First off, "whale tail" has become a generic term to refer to most all 911 / 930 rear spoilers. While many of these may look similar to the untrained eye, there are, in fact, numerous different styles: Whale Tail, Tea Tray Tail, Carrera Tail, etc, etc. To be clear, this auction is for a '78 - '89 930 Tea Tray style base and rubber spoiler lip.

The Tea Tray spoiler replaced the original 3.0-liter 930's "Whale Tail" spoiler. It was introduced in 1978 as part of the 3.3-liter 930 model and designed to accommodate the new charge cooler.

    Evolution of the Spoiler:
The original "Whale Tail" spoiler first appeared on the 1974 911 Carrera RS 3.0, itself an evolution of the earler ducktail spoiler.

For the 1978 model year, Porsche introduced the 3.3-liter 930 Turbo, which included a charge cooler and a revised rear spoiler, which became known as the "Tea Tray" due to its flat top surface and raised rubber lip around the sides and rear edge.

The Tea Tray spoiler remained factory equipment on the Turbo and on naturally aspirated cars with the M491 option (although the M491 versions featured different: deck lids, internal venting and tighter mesh grilles) until the end of the 930 platform in 1989. Some 911 SCs were equiped with the Tea Tray spoiler from the factory.

Back to the auction description. So, per the above, this item is *not* "The iconic rear spoiler, first introduced in 1974." Instead, it's the other iconic version introduced in 1978.

Next, I am unsure as to what "Retaining its original latching mechanism" and "rubber supports" refers to as these items would be part of the decklid, that, per subsequent posts, is not included as part of this auction.

Apologies for the long post, but I don't want the buyer to end up with the wrong part and since I'm up at 2a with jet lag, I figured I'd scratch my Porsche OCD itch.

    GLWA!

  • Martini91 (registered bidder) 1 month, 1 weekago

  • sbrown7731 (seller) 1 month, 1 weekago

Yes the color is guards red and we can package for shipping. The deck lid in the background is not included. The condition of the paint is very good

  • tonycamodeca (registered bidder) 1 month, 1 weekago

So the auction includes the deck lid that is pictured in the background? What condition is the paint? I am assuming Guards Red? Is the seller willing to package for shipping?
