@Rennster Thank you for the indepth explanation! Note to self, seek out Paint to Sample Plus cars.

@matpatte That is a very good and valid question! Paint-to-Sample (PTS) used to be pretty much what you describe. You had to turn in a sprayed out sample for a feasibility study and - once tested and approved - you could order the paint. Or, for colors that had already been tested, you could order those without feasibility study (and obviously much faster).

Over time the number of approved colors had grown and Porsche put those on a list (that was officially only available to the dealerships), so clients would know right away, if they had to go through feasibility studies or not.

Also, there is only a certain number of feasibility studies that can be administered by Porsche (and since those used to be free of charge, everyone was able to request a study).

Not too long ago, Porsche has changed the process (and pricing) and made it easier for clients to decide on their exterior color with enhancing the online Car Configurator to include (approved) Paint-to-Sample colors (which used to be only in the internal list).

The new Paint-to-Sample Plus is now what you had referred to in your question, getting a new color approved based on a spayed out sample that you send to Porsche (and pay for the feasibility study).

Typically, those newly tested and approved colors end up in the Paint-to-Sample pallet, but apparently Porsche now also allows unique colors that are approved for the individual request or only.

In any case, if you would like to learn more about PTS/PTS+, we are happy to help. In fact, we have a whole wall of PTS samples in our studio in Los Angeles… 😇

I'm a little confused about this program, how is it paint to sample if you are choosing from their predetermined colors?

I thought paint to sample was bringing in your own sample for them to match, or bring in your own paint code.
