The E53 X5 debuted as BMWs first SUV in 1999, and was manufactured in Spartansburg, South Carolina at BMW’s new production facility, sharing much of its equipment with the BMW E39 5-Series and Land Rover L322 Range Rover. This 2002 example was ordered in Titanium Silver over a Black Montana leather interior and was optioned with the larger 4.4L V8 engine, the Premium Package, and the Sport Package. It has received extensive maintenance under the current ownership, including a complete overhaul of the suspension, a new fuel pump and filter, new calipers, rotors, parking brake shoes and brake hoses, a new battery, and a new radiator, water pump and thermostat, coolant hoses, valley pan gasket, crankcase vent valve, spark plugs and ignition coils, and a new expansion tank. The seller reports that the transmission has failed and will need to be rebuilt or replaced. Showing just under 167,500 miles on the odometer, this X5 4.4 is now being offered for auction at no reserve by its seller based out of Illinois.
The exterior is finished in Titanium Silver (354) with gloss black Shadowline trim. Equipment includes black roof rails, black body molding, a rear spoiler, auto-dimming exterior mirrors, rain-sensing windshield wipers, body-colored mirror caps, xenon headlights, white turn signals, and fog lamps. The seller reports the front and rear bumper were repainted due to cosmetic reasons, and the windscreen and mirror housings have been repainted due to rock damage that occurred in May of 2022, as seen on the CARFAX report. The seller also notes a scratch on the rear passenger door that has since been professionally touched up. Detailed images are provided in the gallery along with the complete CARFAX report. This X5 rides on 18” BMW Style 74 wheels which are mounted with Pirelli Scorpion all-terrain tires showing date codes from 2018.
The interior is upholstered in black Montana leather with Fineline wood trim on the center console, dashboard, and door panels. The optional Sport Package equips power-adjustable bolstered sport seats with lumbar adjustment and memory function, an Anthracite headliner, and a three-spoke multifunction M-Sport steering wheel. Amenities include a sunroof, automatic climate control, optional rear air conditioning, rear sun blinds, an onboard computer, and remote keyless entry. The original navigation display has been replaced with a Kenwood DNX693S navigation head unit coupled with Audiofrog GS10 and GS40 speakers and GS410C crossovers. The seller reports regular wear throughout the interior due to age and the automatic climate control unit displays some pixel fading on the passenger side.
This X5 is powered by a 4.4L M62B44 V8, which was factory rated at 282 HP and 325 lb.-ft of torque. All four wheels are driven by a 5-speed automatic transmission, which has failed and is in need of a rebuild or a replacement. The optional Sport Package equips an M-Sport tuned suspension. A long list of maintenance items were performed by the seller during their ownership, including new Bilstein B6 sport struts at all four corners, Bilstein coil springs, a 20-piece Lemforder suspension kit consisting of new control arms, ball joints, sway bar links, tie rod ends, and stabilizer link pins, a ZF steering gear rack, new Arnott air springs and height level sensors for the self-leveling rear suspension, a new BorgWerner fuel pump and Mann fuel filter, a Bosch alternator, genuine BMW brake rotors, Jurid brake pads, Pagid parking brake shoes, ATE brake calipers and hoses, a NAPA AGM battery, a Behr radiator, a genuine BMW water pump and thermostat, most of the coolant hoses, a genuine BMW valley pan gasket, a new crankcase ventilation valve kit, Bosch spark plugs and ignition coils, and a Mahle Behr expansion tank. The seller notes the lower timing cover gasket seeps a small amount of oil (a ½ quart per 5,000 miles), and reports the coolant, brake fluid, transfer case, power steering, and front and rear differentials were drained and filled within the last two years, along with the failed transmission.
This sale will include 2 keys, owner’s manuals, and extensive maintenance documentation including receipts for all replacement parts.

@Jimbo1907 Thank you so very much for your appreciation, kind words, and praise you extended to me for being as thorough and transparent as possible with the details pertaining to my E53 X5’s listing. I truly hope it shows just how much I cared for and loved this truck by trying my very best to maintain its upkeep.
Nice listing and laudably complete and open. Well done.
Theoretically, yes, you could add a manual transmission to the vehicle by drilling a hole through the floorboard / firewall for the third pedal, because the 3.0 inline 6 cylinder variants offered on the the E53’s first generation was a drivetrain option; however, I could not guarantee the gear ratios would handle the V8’s output power if you accelerated hard all of the time, since I am not an engineer. I hope this snippet of information proves a baseline, so you can investigate the tolerances further unless you install a non-ZF or getrag manual that could handle the power output if you want to redline the vehicle all of the time.
@wtopher — I wonder if replacing the transmission with a manual would be possible?
Good day PCARMARKET enthusiasts:
I would like to take a brief moment of your time, so that I can introduce myself to you on a personal level as Chris, wtopher, the owner and seller of the 2002 BMW E53 4.4i listed for sale on the auction. I acquired the vehicle in November 2015, and drove it daily for the past 60,000 miles for six years and nine months. This particular X5 represents an unparalleled example of a vehicle, which I maintained above and beyond the manufacturer's stated list of itemized recommendations: oil changes every 5,000 miles, both front and rear differentials, power steering reservoir, radiator and cooling system, transmission, and transfer fluids were drained and filled and / or flushed every 35,000 to 40,000 miles, whenever any mechanical component failed, I replaced it immediately without hesitation, and few examples on the road today will be presented with a document set of service records such as this. With that said, I regret to come to terms with the fact that the transmission failed prematurely, because I expected my X5 to see me through another eight to ten years of enjoyment and smiles per hour.
I am here to answer any questions posed to me regarding my ownership of the X5, maintenance or repairs, or just what it is like to own a BMW altogether; I have driven BMWs from the tender age of seventeen, I am now forty, and am completely well-versed in what to expect as these vehicles age.
Thank you for visiting my page, I welcome any comments or feedback, and happy bidding.
Sincerely,
Chris
