Available for auction at no reserve is this 1964 Chevrolet Corvair Monza Coupe finished in Silver over a red vinyl interior. Built by General Motors from 1960-1969, the Corvair remains the only mass-produced American passenger car to feature an air-cooled rear-mounted engine. This 1964 example was sold new from Bast Chevrolet of New York equipped with an Air flat-six engine paired with the optional Powerglide automatic gearbox and the premium Monza trim package. Believed to have spent its entire life on Long Island, this Corvair was acquired from a long-term owner in May of 2020 and has since been serviced with rebuilt Weber carburetors, a new fuel tank, fuel lines, vacuum modulator, and more. As previously listed on PCARMARKET, this uniquely pantinaed Covair is now being offered for auction by its seller out of New York accompanied by original sales documents.

This Corvair comes finished in what is believed to be the original color of Silver. The exterior exhibits paint cracking, sun damage, and some surface rust as well as a small hole visible on the front passenger side and a small dent at the rear.  Detailed images are provided in the gallery. Features include Monza badging, chrome bumpers and trim, dual lower rear grilles, a dual-exit exhaust, and a set of 13" wheels with Monza hubcaps and older Firestone whitewall tires.

Inside, you will find a red vinyl interior with premium bucket seats and matching carpets.  The rear deck was replaced with a custom fabricated unit by Clarks Corvair of Massachusetts, and the seller notes a few cracks on the dashboard as well as broken seams on the headliner. The speedometer and odometer are said to be functional, while the speedometer produces a clicking noise during operation. The weatherstripping for the front trunk has been replaced and new weatherstripping for the rear side windows is said to accompany the sale

Power comes from an air-cooled 2.7L  Air flat-six engine which produced up to 110 HP when new.  The rear wheels are driven by way of an optional two-speed Powerglide automatic transmission. For 1964, significant engineering updates were made to the Corvair including an increase in engine displacement, the addition of a transverse leaf spring along with softer rear coil springs, a standard front anti-roll bar, and finned rear drum brakes. This Corvair features an upgraded electric fuel pump and electronic ignition and has been recently serviced with rebuilt Weber carburetors, a new fuel tank, fuel lines, harmonic balancer, oil pan gasket, vacuum modulator, heater hoses, exhaust system, starter, and generator.

This sale will include a valid New York registration and documentation from the original owner's purchase. Brimming with character and retro style, this charming 1964 Corvair awaits its next owner.

@Miguel_nunez97 I have owned half a dozen Corvair varieties (currently a '64 coupe and '66 4-door) which pales to the dozens of air cooled Porsches (currently 7) and many vintage VW's I have owned. These cars will grow on you. They are sporty, practical and durable. GLWTS

Ah! The driving video brings me back to driving my 61 Tempest back in 1974. The clunk of driving out of the driveway combined with the multiple turns of the steering wheel, when making a ninety degree turn. Back when you knew how the car was connected to the road, via it’s four, narrow, bias ply contact points and a clapped out suspension. Kids today don’t know what they’re missing.

@nobrakes Wow! Thank you for all of the incredible information. Good to know that the Nadar “Unsafe At Any Speed” was de-funked as I’ve had an amazing experience driving this vehicle. Having had a few other builds in the past, this one definitely takes home the “wow” factor and put endless smiles on my face as well as those around me. Even had someone with an air-cooled 911 flag me down while driving to chat about this American made air-cooled!

Those are the original type Rochester one barrel carbs. The factory snorkel air box would not fit if this car was converted to Weber’s. Only the Spyder was equipped with the 180 horsepower turbo. A 4-carb normally aspirated version was really the one to own with its 140hp output. Best coupled to the close ration4-speed. Yenko, a dealer made famous for modifying First gen Camaro for road course work actually built a Corvair dubbed the Stinger for that purpose first. Jay Leno owns a Yenko Stinger. When you consider that in ‘64 the best Porsche had to offer was a flat 4 super 90 356, GM’s base Corvair put out 110hp. It took Porsche until ‘75 to turbocharge a 911. The second gen Corvair offered the same power plants but improved handling and a sexier more European influence styling. Ralph Nadar infamously panned the Corvair as “unsafe at any speed” due to the lift throttle oversteer inherent in its rear engine layout. Less known is that Texas A&M refutes the Nadar conclusions regarding the Corvair being any more dangerous even less so than other cars of the era. But it was too late and the bad press caused GM to cancel the Corvair.
