An homage to the iconic Ferrari 250 GT California Spyder, this handcrafted replica is one of approximately 50 examples reportedly built by Modena Design and Development of California. The car features a fabricated steel tube frame housing a 302ci Ford V8 with a 5-speed manual transmission and a live rear axle with coilover suspension. It has been part of the current owner’s collection since 2010 and is now being offered for auction out of Georgia benefitting from a recent service.

Mounted to a custom fabric steel tube chassis, the steel and fiberglass bodywork was crafted by Modena Design and Development, the same builders of the famous Ferrari 250 GT California replica that was destroyed in the movie Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. The car’s exterior is finished in red with a black convertible top and equipped with dual chrome mirrors, covered headlamps, fog lights, a recessed hood scoop, fender vents, a polished fuel filler cap, Ferrari badging, quad polished exhaust tips, and authentic 250 GT California taillight lenses. The car rides on knockoff-style 15” chrome wire wheels dressed in steel-belted all-season tires. The seller adds that the exterior was recently polished and the car presents very well cosmetically, detailed images are provided in the gallery.

The cabin features a pair of bucket seats and a custom Ferrari-style dashboard in black leather with a matching center console, door panels, and carpeting. Accessories include a three-spoke wood-rimmed steering wheel with a Ferrari horn button, Ferrari-branded door sills, analog Smiths gauges, a dash-mounted rearview mirror, an air conditioning system, and a Becker Monza cassette stereo. The seller indicates an incorrect shift pattern on the gear knob and that the tachometer works intermittently.

Power comes from a carbureted 302ci Ford V8 engine with Ferrari-branded valve covers and heat-wrapped headers. A 5-speed manual transmission sends power to the rear wheels. The chassis incorporates a Ford live rear axle with coilover suspension and front disc brakes. The seller indicates a full service has been completed by a classic car specialist and there are no outstanding maintenance issues at this time.

This sale will include a clean Georgia for a 1993 replica Ferrari.

The seller would like you to know: “One of approx. 50 units produced by Modena Design company of the iconic 250 Cal Spider before Ferrari sent them a Cease and Desist… Modena is the same company that built the iconic cars for the Ferris Bueller Day Off movie. My dad & I have owned this car since 2010 and gets lots of admiration in our collection of high-end collector sports cars. This one is in excellent condition and recently serviced. If you have the means… I highly recommend it!”

@toothdoc I am not entirely sure what’s going on with tach, our mechanic seems to think without consistent use the Tach will stay intermittent. It was diagnosed as a bad tach at the last service but I don’t think it was messed with. Since we do not drive our cars to the limit, we did not need a consistent tach reading. If next owner prefers driving to the limit of each gear, a new tach is a simple fix. For reference, I just checked Smith Vintage tach are readily available for less than $100. Hope this helps!

This car has been sparingly driven since the last 2023 service except for 1 local car show where I took it to and received tons of love & attention including the People’s Choice award (Festival of Speed car show in Alpharetta,GA). Everyone loves seeing this car, even non-car people! Tons of fun

@EVantage Drivetrain is all Ford with a stock crate 302 cubic inch V8 with aluminum intake + aluminum headers paired to a 5 speed manual Ford transmission and 9 bolt rear end.

Recent service invoice shows brakes were inspected and repaired as needed, which included new Front and Rear brake master cylinder and bleeding the system. Hope this helps!

Just added a few undercarriage photos to the gallery. A great example of a tube frame chassis designed by Indy Car designer Bob Webb! For a concours level the undercarriage could benefit from a little detailing but overall clean and clearly totally absent of any rust. Hope this helps!

Also note: coil overs on all 4 corners

To be clear, this a replica of the SWB version of the Cal Spyder. There are some subtle differences with the LWB version, such as in the number of fins in the side grilles.

@Azguy328 We chose the non-bumper appearance as some factory 250 Cal Spyders (see most recent pictures attached of a photo from period of an original 250 Cal without bumpers and another one more recently at a Gooding auction). If the next owner desires the bumpers, Modena utilized Fiat 124 bumpers which are readily available.

@1991928gt A/C blows cold! It was just charged and checked with no leaks..not sure of the parts manufacturer however with the top up, it blows cold enough for mid summer here in Atlanta

  • 1991928gt (registered bidder) 3 monthsago

Does the a/c work? What is parts/manufacturers are the a/c system comprised of? what would a temperature gun show?

    Hey everyone,
Welcome to our auction for this beautiful 250 Cal Spyder replica by Modena! The same company which provided the 3 cars used for the famous movie Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. Modena Design (the builder) completed approx 50 cars before getting a Cease and Desist from Ferrari in early 1990s. Very few exist and even few remain, with this being one of the last ones built.

This one comes out of our personal collection and benefits from a recent paint correction by our professional detailer along with a recent service / minor tune up by our mechanic. Please make sure to watch the walk around and driving / start up videos. This car is a blast to drive and gets tons of attention!

Please feel free to reach out with any questions and note I can assist with shipping arrangements anywhere in the continental USA.
    Best of luck to all,
    Vance
