Representing the final generation of the classic long-hood 911 body style, this 1972 Porsche 911E Targa also features a unique "Ölklappe” external oil filler exclusive to this model year. Upgraded with a 3.2-liter flat-six Carrera engine, it comes finished in red over black upholstery. Among the least common 911 versions at the time, this 911E Targa is one of just 861 produced for 1972. The car was reportedly delivered new in Belgium before being imported to Canada in 1989. It is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Canada.

Reportedly factory-specified in Albert Blue, this 911E has been refinished in red. It features a black top, a silver Targa bar, and a wraparound rear window, along with an external oil filler lid mounted behind the passenger door on the rear quarter panel known as an "Ölklappe.” Other details include chrome door handles and window trim, aluminum rocker moldings, polished dual side mirrors, and 14” Fuchs alloy wheels. Additional images are provided in the gallery.

The black-upholstered cabin has been modified with RS-style bucket seats, racing harnesses, a MOMO Prototipo steering wheel, and a rear roll cage. Accessories include VDO instrumentation, aluminum dashboard trim, a locking glovebox, roll-up windows, and a push-button stereo. Additionally, the carpets have been replaced.

This 911E was upgraded with a 3.2-liter flat-six engine from an ‘87 Carrera in 2011. The rear wheels are driven through a 5-speed 915 manual transaxle. The seller notes that a short-shift kit has been installed and the fluids have been replaced. As part of a recent service, a new oil tank was installed and the oil cooling lines were also replaced.

This example is offered with a Canadian registration.

The seller would like you to know: "This Targa combines the best of all worlds for a long hood Targa. (1) It is a 72 with the signature external Oil Cap and the dry sump oil tank repositioned forward of the rear axle to reduce overhang weight. (2) It has arguably the best 911 engine, the 3.2 Carrera engine, renowned for its reliability and ease of maintenance. (3) It is a turn-key, well-built Targa with upgraded and/or refreshed suspension components and with the engine swap done by a renowned Porsche specialist."

A question asked a few times in private is if I know of a good reference locally to revert this Targa to its original Albert Blue. The answer is affirmative. As a matter of fact, it was on my to do list but decided to let the next caretaker decide as i thought that the existing color seems to also have its audience. It will be a very straightforward project as the car is rust free which means little/no bodywork or rust repair is needed prior to the repaint.

Vintage cars (25 years+) seem to be exempt from tariffs according to Hemmings and Hagerty and other trusted sources on the net.

  • zigermanz (seller) 4 days, 17 hoursago

@a41apache Unfortunately I can not comment on this subject as things are pretty volatile and ever changing when it comes to tariffs as we all know.. This Targa is here to sell, kindly do your research and bid accordingly.

  • a41apache (registered bidder) 4 days, 20 hoursago

will this car be subject to US tariffs if shipped to the US

  • zigermanz (seller) 5 days, 4 hoursago

@Skates1972 It might be possible, will inquire.

  • Skates1972 (registered bidder) 5 days, 4 hoursago

Would those alternate seats be available for purchase in addition to the car?

  • zigermanz (seller) 6 days, 2 hoursago

I am asked in private if I still have the original seats. I don’t unfortunately as I bought the Targa with the shown seats but I know of a pair of comfort seats with headrests that are in fair shape that can be swapped along with the original seat belts in the Targa prior to delivery. The swap can be done in direct/equal exchange to the existing RS seats with no extra cost for labour.

  • zigermanz (seller) 6 days, 5 hoursago

@Nico911 Cool coincidence, thank you for chiming in. I am sure that this Targa had instilled in you the love we all have for these cars.

  • zigermanz (seller) 6 days, 5 hoursago

@DOGGERJK I can’t tell for sure, but on the back of one of the guages it is stamped 7/71. Experts here can confirm an approximate build date based on the VIN.

Also, it is mentioned in the letter between D’Ieteren Group (the selling Porsche Dealer to one of the previous owners ) pic#132 that the car was first registered in October 71.

  • Nico911 6 days, 6 hoursago

Great to see this car is still in Montreal. I am the son of the owner of this 911 from 1998 to 2010. My father loved it a lot. He bought it from a man in Laval (north of Montreal) with a 2,2L engine, same color, but the interior was original. He always regretted a bit to sold it but had to for some home improvements. We are a 911 family (i'm at my third one myself), hope this nice one finds a great home soon.

  • DOGGERJK (registered bidder) 6 days, 6 hoursago

Hello - do you know the original build date of the car? Thank you

  • zigermanz (seller) 6 days, 18 hoursago

@Patrick3000 Thank you for your relevant question that led me to weigh the car. It only makes sense after all the improvements done on this Targa to see where the car stand in terms of weight and I was glad to see the final result in numbers.

  • Patrick3000 (registered bidder) 6 days, 23 hoursago

@zigermanz TY for the update. That is very light and a nice little hot rod you have there, tempting 👍

  • zigermanz (seller) 1 weekago

@Patrick3000 As promised, I took the Targa for weighing. Pictures of the weighing just uploaded. 2340lbs without the Targa roof. It is a sunny day so I went roofless for the weighing.
It is sensibly the same gross weight in its stock form including top(2370 lbs) which considering all the add ons and the mods (roll cage, front and rear stabiliser bars, 4point seatbelts, Carrera oil cooler with all the extra heavy Elephant racing finned brass lines and metal and rubber hoses and lines for the front oil cooler, extra weight of a 3.2 compared to the 2.4L….etc) is quite an achievement.

So bottom line, a dramatic improvement in power/weight ratio with superior power delivery and suspension/handling.

I am being asked in private if I can assist in shipping the Targa to the US.

I definitely can. I have done it in the past multiple times. I will guide the buyer through the whole process and connect him with a renowned customs broker that I deal with regularly.I will also assist the buyer finding the best enclosed transport for a reasonable rate.

Courtesy storage indoors is also offered awaiting transport.

I remain here for the questions.

@Patrick3000 Good question. It is actually something that i can do this week when i take it out for a driving video that I am planning on doing.

  • Patrick3000 (registered bidder) 1 week, 1 dayago

    How much does it weigh?

  • zigermanz (seller) 1 week, 2 daysago

    Greetings P-car Community

Presented here is a 1972 911E Targa that I have owned since 2015. Prior to my ownership this car belonged to a gentleman who had commissioned extensive work including the engine swap to a 3.2L form a 1987 Carrera. The Swap was done by a Montreal Porsche specialist, Ron Green, who also performed a series of improvements on the suspension and the interior.

This Targa comes with an extensive binder (pic#120) where over 100 bills and receipts dating back to 1988 are saved. Pictures of said file will be added after this opening message.
Additionally, I have bills and receipts going back to the importation paperwork from Belgium to Montreal.

This 911 was initially sold by D'Ieteren Group in Belgium as depicted in photo #82 and #132

It was imported to Montreal in 1988 (pic#138) and was owned from 1988 to 1998 by a very meticulous care taker who sold it to its second owner also in Montreal and kept it from 1998 to 2010.

Its third owner who owned from 2010 to 2015 had performed the engine swap and a lot of modifications and improvements on the suspension and the interior. The cumulative cost of these improvements including the swap was close to 50k-60k$ $ as depicted by the bills and work was performed between 2010 and 2011.

Under my ownership, I installed a new gas tank and I refreshed the cooling circuit and changed all the oil lines from front to rear by installing finned Oil lines from Elephant Racing and the rest of the hoses and lines (pic #106-110-111-112-114). I also installed a new dry sump oil Tank bought from Porsche directly (pic#113)

This 911 is a Hoot to drive. It is very light and nimble on its feet but it is also eager at the blip of a throttle to make the rear tires screech and the rear end dance all while being controllable and composed.

I stay on stand by throughout this auction to answer your questions here or in private by hitting contact seller.
