Available for auction is an original 12-inch diameter porcelain pump plate sign from the Indiana-based Platolene 500 (R.J. Oil) company. Platolene 500 was a small, regional oil and gas company with retail locations primarily in Indiana, southern Illinois, and parts of northern Kentucky. 
Known for its vibrant branding featuring checkered flags and the iconic "500" logo, Platolene 500 memorabilia is highly coveted among petroliana collectors due to its rarity and striking design. The company's name and logo were no coincidence—its founders had ties to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, adding further historical appeal. The seller states this particular sign, removed from an original gas pump in southern Indiana (pictured for reference, pump not included), remains in untouched original condition with no restoration, touch-ups, polish, or wax. 
It retains excellent gloss and shine, along with all four original brass mounting hole grommets—an uncommon and desirable feature. While it has some minor surface wear consistent with age, this is a stunning and authentic piece of American gas and oil history.
