This 2012 Porsche 987.2 Cayman R is one of just 563 examples produced for the U.S. market. Pairing a 6-speed manual transmission with its naturally aspirated 3.4-liter flat-six, this example was converted for track use by the specialists at Speed Gallery in Los Angeles, California. The build includes a GT3-style front bumper, front fender louvers and cutouts, a prominent rear wing, 18” OZ Alleggerita wheels, and a stripped interior featuring a full roll cage, racing seats, an AIM digital dash, JRZ coilovers, a short shifter, and more. Treated with an engine rebuild completed in December 2022 and a refinish in Chalk, this race-ready Cayman R is now being offered for auction by its seller out of New Jersey. This example is refinished in Chalk and features custom fiberglass carbon-look door panels. Exterior modifications include a GT3-style front bumper, fiberglass fenders with carbon fiber louvers and cutouts, a full roof, aerodynamic mirrors, an enlarged ducktail-style rear spoiler, and a prominent rear wing. It rides on silver 18” OZ Alleggerita wheels, with an additional set of black-finished matching wheels included in the sale. Clear paint protection film is applied to the front. Detailed images are provided in the gallery, along with a CARFAX report noting damage in 2015 and 2016 and the issuance of a rebuilt/salvage title.

Inside, the cockpit is fully stripped for weight reduction and features a full roll cage, racing seats with Schroth harnesses, a quick-release MOMO flat-bottom steering wheel, lightweight hollow door panels, an AIM digital dash for telemetry, and a hard-wired Garmin Catalyst driver performance optimizer. The seller notes the fuel gauge is currently inoperable, the PSM light remains illuminated, with a toggle switch installed for the yaw sensor to facilitate oil level checks. The TPMS light also remains illuminated.

The mid-mounted 3.4-liter flat-six engine is factory-rated at 330 HP and 273 lb-ft of torque. Power is delivered to the rear wheels through a 6-speed manual transmission and a limited-slip differential. The seller reports that Mike Bavaro of Bodymotion in New Jersey performed an engine rebuild in December 2022 at a cost of approximately $30k. Modifications include a short shifter and JRZ sport-tuned coilover shocks.

This Cayman R track car is offered with a bill of sale and an extra set of wheels.

The seller would like you to know: “I'm so grateful you've taken the time to review my Cayman R! I never wanted to sell this machine; but, things change and I want it to be driven. While I haven't quite lived my dream; I have been blessed to get close. The Cayman is an amazing car. A professional driver once said after taking it out, "It just wants to go!" It's on rails. It weighs 2538 pounds. The car has been impeccably maintained by Bodymotion of Ocean Township, NJ. Mike Bavaro, the owner, rebuilt the engine, himself. They're big in the Cayman racing world. I broke in the engine at Lightning during two events, totaling about 500 miles, 226 miles at a maximum of 3,000 rpm and 262 miles at a maximum of 4,000 rpm. Mike said that was sufficient. I will miss this amazing car, forever. Such a passion. Whoever purchases this car will be laughing all the way to the checkered flag!”

Are you able to drive this on the street?

  • arobinson0842 (seller) 1 week, 3 daysago

@Marcus1248 Hi, Marcus. Thank you! The cutouts in the fenders decrease the pressure generated at speed. Coupled withe the carbon vents on top, a great deal of downforce is generated simultaneously. Together, these features create somewhat of a vacuum.

looks like a nice build, just out of curiosity what is the benefit of the body cut outs behind the front wheels? Is it aerodynamics or does it maybe allow for more suspension geometry flexibility?

    Hi, All:
Just a note in the final hours. This car is amazing. I've been informed it may satisfy the rules of GTB1 racing. I'd have to double-check. All mechanicals are original spec. The body have been lightened. It only weighs 2,538 pounds. The tires are square. It's more nimble than Jack, himself! It's a blast to drive! I'm sure there's some lucky Porsche fan out there who wants to up their game for next season. That's northeast talk, I guess. With the fresh engine, this car will be strong and reliable for many years!
    Thank you for looking!

@r32fan Hi, there, r32fan: Thanks for looking. Sadly, no. This is a full race Cayman R built strictly for the track and I do not have a hot lap video. And, likewise, it does not have A/C. But! you always drive with the windows down on the track!

Hi, can you add a PoV driving video?

Does the car have (working) A/C?
