Constructed in April 1998 for the 1999 model year, this early Porsche 996 Carrera Coupe is finished in Black Metallic over Black leather upholstery and equipped with a 6-speed manual transmission. Factory options include the desirable Aerokit, 18” Sport Classic wheels, a limited-slip differential, an automatic braking differential, traction control, and power-adjustable seats. Upgrades consist of H&R coilovers and Fister Motorsports Stage 1 mufflers, while major service since March 2021 included replacing the IMS bearing, timing chain sensor, rear main seal, clutch, flywheel, pressure plate, release bearing, and tires. Showing just over 19k miles on the odometer, this 996.1 is now being offered for auction by its seller out of California.

The exterior was ordered in Black Metallic (L744) with an optional Aerokit (XAA) including GT3-style spoilers and side skirts. Equipment also includes an electric sunroof, dual polished exhaust outlets, and black brake calipers with white Porsche lettering. The optional 18” Sport Classic wheels were fitted with Michelin Pilot Sport All Season 4 tires in March 2021. LED headlights were added, and front-end paint protection film was applied in September 2021. Detailed images are provided in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX report.

The Black interior features a matching Alcantara headliner and optional power-adjustable leather front seats with lumbar support and driver’s memory settings, along with leather rear seats. Additional options include a CD storage compartment and a Becker-Porsche CDR-210 stereo. Standard amenities consist of a leather-wrapped steering wheel, automatic climate control, and cruise control. The driver’s window regulator was replaced in July 2023. A breakdown of the factory option codes is as follows:

  • L744 – Black Metallic paint
  • AY – Black leather
  • C02 – Version for USA
  • XAA – Aerokit
  • XRB – 18″ SportClassic two-piece wheels
  • 220 – Limited-Slip Differential
  • 222 – Traction control (ASR)
  • 224 – Automatic Braking Differential (ABD)
  • 234 – Unspecified production code related to tires
  • 424 – CD storage compartment
  • 437 – Eight-way power-adjustable seat, left
  • 438 – Eight-way power-adjustable seat, right
  • 513 – Power lumbar support, right
  • 537 – Seat position memory, left
  • 586 – Power lumbar support, left
  • 688 – Becker-Porsche CDR-210 stereo
  • 936 – Leather rear seats
  • 983 – Leather front seats

Power comes from a naturally aspirated 3.4-liter flat-six engine factory-rated at 296 HP and 258 lb-ft of torque, paired with a 6-speed manual transmission and an optional limited-slip differential. Additional factory options include an Automatic Braking Differential (ABD) and Traction Control (ASR). The brakes were reportedly serviced in 2020, and the suspension was upgraded with H&R coilovers in September 2021. In March 2021, major services included the replacement of the IMS bearing, timing chain sensor, rear main seal, clutch, flywheel, pressure plate, and release bearing. Additionally, Fister Motorsports Stage 1 mufflers were installed in September 2021. The reverse light switch was replaced in July 2023, and more recent service in September 2024 included an oil change and replacements of the air intake tube, mass airflow sensor, and oxygen sensors. The seller adds that the vehicle passed a California smog and emissions test on June 6, 2025, with the certificate remaining valid for 90 days.

This sale will include a clean title, owner’s manuals, a toolkit, and a spare tire.

The seller would like you to know: “This is an early 996 with desirable factory options.”

Lovely 996 here. As a guy who had only had his license for a few years when the 996 came out, I actually have to say I really like the fried egg headlights despite all the grief that purists gave it. Maybe it’s just an age thing but it is a unique look and combined with the Aerokit - this thing rocks!

  • hefty_smurf (registered bidder) 1 month, 1 weekago

Just felt like I should come here to endorse the seller. I have known him for a decade and he is an upstanding (car) guy and great contributor to the Norcal car scene. You may have seen some of his stuff from that other auction site. He takes great care of his cars and represents them all honestly.

I have driven this car and road tripped with him taking this car to Rennsport Reunion. Definitely a connoisseur’s choice. The most analog feeling 911 you can experience with hydraulic steering and a cable throttle while also having frosty AC and a usable stereo.

Bid with confidence and flex on the late model PTS guys at your local PCA meet with a true rarity.

"Receipt", not recipe in that prior message. PCarmarket: just a note for the future... maybe allow any message the ability to be edited within 3 minutes of initial submission.

  • Dave_Car_Guy (seller) 1 month, 1 weekago

@rickster Thanks, yes... I just responded to your private question. But to be fair, I have had several people reach out and ask about the IMS retrofit, so you aren't the only one who didn't see that.

Just so everyone is clear, the recipe for that IMS work (plus clutch and flywheel, etc) is in photo 144 in the gallery. The date of the IMS replacement was 3/18/21. There is no warranty on that, expressed nor implied, as far as I know.

However, I will point out that the IMS failure discussion is to some extent not relevant here. First off, one of the unique features of the early build 996s were that they came with a dual-row IMS. It was the 2002 and LATER 996 models that had the single-row IMS, which was more prone to failure (and even that is argued extensively on the internet). This car came from the factory with the more robust dual-row IMS, but the prior owner though that it would be best to replace it before he sold it, just so he wouldn't get a bunch of questions about it. So the Porsche Dual-Row IMS was replaced with the Classic Dual-Row IMS retrofit, part #106-8.4, which uses a custom ceramic hybrid dual row setup.

  • rickster (registered bidder) 1 month, 1 weekago

Sorry, I just recalled that the mileage is shown on the work order when the IMS was done.

Please excuse the typos in my prior comments! I have been on the road and had to respond from a small screen and my iPhone loves to make odd corrections to my typing! (For example: "expert paint" should have been "excellent paint"). Anyway, I'm home now... any questions are welcome during this final day of the auction. Good luck to all bidders and thanks for the comments and the questions/messages you've sent! Let's see who gets to go home with this beauty!!

  • Dave_Car_Guy (seller) 1 month, 1 weekago

@Singer2020 There is no rust or corrosion under the car or anywhere, as you can see in the under-car photos. In fact, most of the undercarriage still has evidence of the original cosmoline protectant applied by the factory for shipping. The car’s first owner before me was in Illinois. Although the carfax shows two prior owners, it was just one, but there was a change in how the owner titled it. I am the second owner.

  • Singer2020 (registered bidder) 1 month, 1 weekago

any signed of rust under the car since it was in east coast for a while?

  • rickster (registered bidder) 1 month, 1 weekago

I need a Tip Tranny otherwise I'd be all over it!! Beautiful example of a timeless look. And forget the headlights folks! You don't see them when driving anyway. What's the big deal?

I am posting a few extra pictures of the paint, hoping to show the unique bronze undertones, and also showing the paint meter readings. I am confident that any buyer will be more than pleased with the condition of the paint on this car!

  • Dave_Car_Guy (seller) 1 month, 1 weekago

@comedian Hi and thanks for asking ! Yes, all original paint, never had a need for any work. It’s absolutely expert paint !! Hopefully the photos donut justice. It’s got a mirror-like finish in the indoor lights and the metallic finish outdoors brings out some of the bronze highlights that are unique to this black metallic paint from 1999. Standard black ain’t was far more common that year, and you won’t find many others in this paint color. Checkout photo 28 for a little of the unique attributes. I’ll see if I can post some more that show the color. Thanks!

I have a guards red 996.1 with the factory aerokit as well. I get comments CONSTANTLY from people admiring it. And this is in Los Angeles, where I’ve driven by some of the most exclusive cars in the world regularly. This car commands attention and is absolutely appreciated for its aesthetic. If I could swing a second one right now, I’d bid. This is perfection.

@jeffreywyue46m3 I agree fully. The 996 has a very clean look but it is helped by the factory Aero Kit. I think people are finally appreciating these for their timeless aesthetic. This car is truly the most analog water-cooled 911 you can get. It gives vintage vibes at this point, while being modern enough to have things like working A/C and heat. I loved my 1977 911, but love this even more, for its drivability while also feeling old-school. And this has the full look of a 1999 Euro 996 GT3 at a fraction of the price.

@rickster Apologies, as those service photos were all submitted in the photos to PCarmarket. For some reason, they only included page 2 of 4 from Barnaba Autosport. Adding now...

  • rickster (registered bidder) 1 month, 1 weekago

Would you please post pics of the service work done; especially replacement of the IMS bearing, etc.
    Thanks!

  • Dave_Car_Guy (seller) 1 month, 1 weekago

BTW, on 9/7/24, CarFax shows a service I had done on the car. The receipt for that service (German Auto Care dated 7/11/24) is included in the photo gallery. Note that the mass flow sensor and a couple manifold tubes were replaced. Of course, CarFax isn't perfect, so their entry says "intake manifold replaced", which it wasn't. The intake manifold was removed for the other work and re-installed. Just thought that should be clarified, because it would seem odd for an actual manifold to "go bad".

Hello and welcome to the auction for my well-loved early-build 996! I want to be as helpful as possible and I pride myself on being completely transparent. I want all bidders, and especially the new owner, to have all available info to bid with confidence, so don't hesitate to ask anything! I hope you love this one as much as I do !
