This 1999 Land Rover Defender 90 soft top is the subject of a recent frame-off restoration completed at a reported cost of approximately $175k. The frame and bodywork have been completely refinished, the cabin has been redone with OEM Vintage Tan leather upholstery, the brakes and suspension have been overhauled, and the turbocharged inline-5 diesel engine has been comprehensively rebuilt and paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox. It also showcases LED lighting, a new A/C system, a high-end sound system, a touchscreen radio, a backup camera, power accessories, and more. This freshly restored and tastefully refined Defender 90 is now being offered for auction out of Florida with just over 100 miles on its new odometer.
During the restoration, the truck’s frame was sandblasted and powder coated while the bodywork was stripped, epoxy-treated, and refinished in Clay Gray. The restoration also included new seals and windows, checkered plate fender tops, wide fender flares, a gloss black grill, LED exterior lighting, a NAS-style rear bumper, heavy-duty side steps, a heavy-duty soft top frame, a new Stayfast soft top with tinted windows, a Puma hood with gas struts, and new 16” Spectre wheels dressed in 35” Maxxis Trepador tires.
The interior has been redone with OEM Vintage Tan leather upholstery using restored original seats and rails. The rear compartment is lined with wood flooring and features opposing jump seats with diamond-stitched centers. Accessories include a three-spoke wood steering wheel, aluminum handles, power windows and door locks, LED lighting, a digital air climate control panel, white yachting-style gauges, four 2-channel speakers, a subwoofer, and a Sony double-din touchscreen head unit with Apple CarPlay and a reversing camera.
Power comes from a turbodiesel Td5 inline-5 engine that has been rebuilt with new valves, pistons, rings, bearings, honed cylinder walls, planed heads, timing chains, glow plugs, a new radiator, silicone hoses, a new coolant pump, and a new dual-mass flywheel. The engine also features a rebuilt turbocharger, a new intercooler, a stainless-steel exhaust, and remapped software. A claimed output of approximately 180 HP is sent to all four wheels through a rebuilt 5-speed manual gearbox, dual-range transfer case, and a locking differential. The restoration also included all new brakes, steering gear, and suspension with a 2” ARB lift kit and Old Man Emu shocks and springs.
