Built to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the lightweight Glaser-bodied 356 “America Roadster” developed for Max Hoffman, the 911 America Roadster was produced in a limited run of 250 units between 1992 and 1993. Based on the 964 Carrera 2 and intended exclusively for the North American market, the distinctive Cabriolet features Turbo-specific bodywork, upgraded suspension, larger brakes, and 17” Cup Design wheels. Finished in Midnight Blue Metallic over grey leather upholstery, this 1992 example is now being offered for auction by its seller out of California with just over 29k miles showing on the odometer.

The America Roadster combines the retractable soft top and standard rear decklid of the Carrera 2 Cabriolet with the wide bodywork of the Turbo model, offering a subtle yet aggressive appearance. Distinguishing features include a unique "Roadster" rear designation and 17” Cup Design wheels. This example was ordered in Midnight Blue Metallic and has been wrapped in matching vinyl due to sun damage on the original paint. It rides on Continental ExtremeContact tires from 2018. Detailed images are provided in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX report.

Inside, the driver is welcomed by grey leather upholstery. Equipment includes power-adjustable seats, a parcel shelf with storage compartments in place of the rear seats, power windows and mirrors, a central locking system, cruise control, air conditioning, and a locking glove box. Additionally, an upgraded Porsche Classic radio has been installed.

Power comes from an air-cooled 3.6-liter flat-six engine rated at 247 HP and 228 lb.-ft of torque. The rear wheels are driven through a 5-speed manual transmission. Corresponding with the wide Turbo-derived bodywork, the America Roadster also shares the Turbo’s robust suspension system and cross-drilled disc brakes sized 322mm in front and 299mm in the rear.

This sale will include a clean title.

The seller would like you to know: “This is an all-original low-mile car that had cosmetic damage to most of the paint due to improper storage. The current owner chose to wrap the car. This would be a perfect donor for a restoration project. The car is in good working order and can be enjoyed as is with the wrap or repainted if the next owner would like.”

@group911 we may be referring to it as same harness, goes from dme to engine. I have several we saved for smaller needs and plugs.

@993tts30 And it was the engine harness not the DME harness.
@Workshop5001 I know the CarFax says no accidents but has it had any damage?

  • 993tts30 (registered bidder) 4 days, 18 hoursago

@Workshop5001 we have repaired at least 15 964 that had DME engine fire harnesses there was/is actually even a recall on them. What happens is internally, the harness degrades, and the ground wires, short out the leads.

Back then, Stoddard had one in Mint Green that sat unsold in their showroom for about a year before someone finally bought it. I assumed someone had backed out of an ordered car, but it did eventually sell. I wonder what happened to it? It really stood out, if a little too bold for me.

  • Workshop5001 (seller) 4 days, 20 hoursago

@993tts30 you are thinking 993 engine harness. There is no issue with dme harness on 964…

  • 993tts30 (registered bidder) 4 days, 21 hoursago

@seller can you check to see if the DME to engine harness has been replaced there will be a date code on the tag. Like any 964 they are notorious for going bad and causing fires.

  • 993tts30 (registered bidder) 4 days, 21 hoursago

Having owned five of the 250 AMRs and having repaired 4 on our Celette bench at weekend rides, I can attest specifically the rear suspension mounting points are exactly the same positions when on the jigs. The difference is the turbo rear trailing arms are larger in diameter.

This one is a nice example with the low miles, however a full repaint will cost$20,000 or more we are finishing a Midnight Blue one in the shop adding new glass seals paint and new leather and some mechanical work. The buyer can expect a very nice starting point or just leave it alone as a driver with the wrap. GLWS.

  • dunavantent (registered bidder) 6 days, 18 hoursago

@Nosubstitute928 Porsche's History used Turbo suspension on the 89 Speedster. Not saying it's needed. The 94 C4 WTL set up is just fine for this car's application. No one needs to throw their passenger's through the windshield on a non-track car. Most buyers never understood this car. Nice to see they are appreciated today.

  • Nosubstitute928 6 days, 18 hoursago

    Two points…

1st the American roadster and wide body convertible.
These are the only rear wheel drive wide body non turbo.

2nd. Twice mentioned as an upgraded suspension.
The turbo suspension is not an upgrade it is different components located in a different location in order to push the wheel hubs out.
It actually handles worse in this location.
If it wasn’t upgrade then the wide body 3.8 RS and RSR would have used the Turbo suspension location.
Wider wheels in the narrow body location is best.

Hello bidders. I just uploaded a pic pre wrap of the hood. This is example of paint condition all over car under the wrap. Sorry we don’t have extensive photos, but bidders should just consider this a vehicle that needs a paint job… Perfect car to enjoy and not worry about cosmetics. Leave the wrap, or we can take it apart and repaint. This would be a fantastic donor for us to repaint, build special engine for, etc. happy to discuss possibilities if anyone would like to reach out and have a call.

@Pcarmarket - the description incorrectly calls out a tiptronic transmission. Pictures indicate a true manual transmission.

Surprising that a rare car like this would receive a wrap vs a proper repaint. Any pics of the paint condition prior to the wrap would be helpful.
