Finished in Slate Blue Metallic over a Cobalt partial leather interior, this 1985 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe features a custom-built 3.5-liter flat-six engine paired with a modified 5-speed manual transaxle and a limited-slip differential. The engine is based on a Porsche 930 case, which is bored out to 3.5 liters using Mahle pistons and cylinders and features Carillo rods, a boattailed crankshaft, sodium-filled Clubsport valves, a twin-plug 964 ignition, extruded intake runners, and a Peter Dawes-tuned chip. The car also features dual front-mounted oil coolers, 993 brakes, 930 floating rotors, a custom gated shifter, factory Sport Seats, a Bluetooth-enabled Blaupunkt stereo, and custom-made 17” Fuchs-style multi-piece wheels. Reported to have been previously featured in Excellence Magazine, this tastefully modified 911 is now being offered for auction out of Arizona.

The car’s exterior is finished in Slate Blue Metallic (L661). Equipment includes integrated front fog lights, a front spoiler, a fender-mounted antenna, power mirrors, an electric sunroof, European-spec rear bumperettes, a “3.5” decklid grille badge, and custom Al Reed 17” Fuchs-style multi-piece wheels measuring 9” wide in front and 10” wide at the rear. New Michelin Pilot Sport tires were mounted in 2025. The seller notes the exterior was previously refinished, and the paint remains in very good condition apart from a small area near the hood badge. Detailed images are provided in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX report.

The cabin is appointed with Cobalt partial leather upholstery and black carpets. Accessories include optional front Sport Seats, a black leather three-spoke steering wheel, power windows, air conditioning, Rennline pedal covers, a custom gated shifter assembly, and a vintage Blaupunkt stereo with a retrofitted Bluetooth receiver. The tachometer dial was swapped for a higher redline version, and the seller notes the A/C does not blow cold at this time.

Power comes from a Porsche 930-based flat-six engine, bored out from 3.3 liters to a 3.5-liter displacement, utilizing Mahle pistons and cylinders with a 10.821:1 compression ratio. The engine was installed at 398,000 miles and features Carillo connecting rods, a boattailed crankshaft, 911 Clubsport sodium-filled valves, a twin-plug ignition with 964 distributors, extruded intake runners, twin front-mounted oil coolers, and a Peter Dawes-tuned chip. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a rebuilt 5-speed manual transaxle with a taller second gear and a limited-slip differential. Stopping power comes from Porsche 993-sourced brake calipers with 930 floating rotors. The seller notes the shock absorbers and battery were replaced within the last 200 miles.

This sale will include owner’s manuals, a spare tire inflator, and a clean title.

The seller would like you to know: “This is a very professionally well-sorted-out twin plug 3.5 911 sleeper.”

@Hangar7 if owning the car is not important to that is fine, but when people assume the state of mind of a seller often leads to buyers losing a chance to own the vehicle. Always be the highest bid for the best chance often time sellers remove their reserve as well.

  • Hangar7 (registered bidder) 2 weeksago

I agree. It’s to the point where I’m just going to end up skipping any auctions and waiting for the MP window afterwards.

This is a perfect example of the current disconnect between buyers and sellers in the car market right now.

  • 68style (registered bidder) 2 weeksago

I don’t think I’ve seen a single completed reserve auction on this site all year, every single one ends with the seller wanting 50% more than the final bid on buy it now.

IMHO. $50k is drivetrain value. Free donor coupe. Tempted but just pulled the trigger on a car. GLWTA and hope this sells to someone who can drive the shoot out of it.

  • ethurtee (registered bidder) 2 weeksago

Check pics 79 and 80. Looks like around 250 to the wheels, it's a custom 915, and the car was original except for a repaint when it was built.

Would love to own this. GLWA

    Hi Chuck, Fellow Arizonan here.

Had a couple questions about the car. Does this have the original 915 gearbox or does it have a G50 in it?
How much power is it making?
Is the car accident/ frame damage free?

    Thank you sir.

No, that is the only place I found rust. Moisture got caught underneath the hood badge rubber gasket. This car was bought new in Hermosa Beach California.

  • Johnbugg (registered bidder) 2 weeks, 2 daysago

Other viewer asked is that a rust bubble next to emblem on front compartment, any reply ?

  • Brian_S 2 weeks, 3 daysago

@Chuckanatr -- any plans to add a driving video? Cold start video?

  • markbutlerinc (registered bidder) 2 weeks, 3 daysago

Any known last date of A/C operation? Any opinion of what the A/C might take to fix/repair to operational state?

  • uribemiami (registered bidder) 2 weeks, 3 daysago

@seller - is that a rust bubble by the front emblem ? If so any other rust present?

The only change in the car was to put a new set of shock absorbers. That was done this year. Remember this car only has about 26,000 miles since it was created back in 2008.

  • pdxjohn65 (registered bidder) 2 weeks, 6 daysago

@Chuckanatr The article is the best "documentation" I've ever seen! Thank you for posting.

  • Davidmcd2018 2 weeks, 6 daysago

Have the suspension, brakes, and clutch been recently updated?

  • PorscheGeek (registered bidder) 2 weeks, 6 daysago

I recall this issue of Excellence and this build....and I kind of miss the days when magazines like Excellence and Sports Car Market Guide would show up in the mail...My Assistant would hide them from me bc I'd get NO work done on the days they were delivered.

This is a great hot rod wold in sheeps clothing in interesting colors - Good Luck ~ !

  • aircooledguyks (registered bidder) 2 weeks, 6 daysago

@Chuckanatr Any idea what happened to the seats shown in the Excellence magazine article?

  • G964 (registered bidder) 3 weeksago

I remember this car from the Excellence article. So cool.

  • Chuckanatr (seller) 3 weeksago

    pdxjohn65

Somehow, I missed the most important photographs and story from Excellence magazine April 2008. The whole story on this car is there for the reading.

No, I have no documentation yes it was a garage queen. If you want to really get into the car, go and read the Carfax Report.

I guess I'll ask the obvious questions? Any documentation on the engine build? Any idea when done? Who built it? How many miles on engine? Looks like a fun car, but hard to set a value when presented without more information.
