Finished in Ruby Red Metallic, this 1984 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe has undergone a comprehensive safari-style transformation since the seller's aquisition approximately four years ago, including a top-end rebuild within the last 300 miles featuring a 3.4L displacement upgrade. The build incorporates various off-road exterior equipment, Elephant Racing suspension, structural reinforcements, Recaro SPG XL seats, a MOMO Mod. 07 steering wheel, a Steve Wong performance chip, M&K sport exhaust, an extended-range Dansk fuel tank, and much more. Campaigned in prominent Porsche rallies such as the Hill Country Rallye, Targa Carolina, and Ruchlos Rallye, this modified Carrera is now being offered for auction out of Texas.
The exterior is said to have been previously refinished in its factory-specified Ruby Red Metallic. Safari-style modifications include a shaved front bumper, custom-fabricated bumper guards with integrated skid plates, a custom roof rack, modern HID headlights, and Black Oak LED light bars and fog lights. The car rides on bronze powder-coated 16”x6.5” Braid Winrace rally wheels wrapped in Toyo Open Country A/T tires, with a matching fifth wheel mounted to the roof rack. The seller notes minor cosmetic wear such as rock chips, scratches, and dings consistent with use. Detailed images are provided in the gallery along with a CARFAX report noting an accident in April 2005.
Originally specified with Burgundy leather, the cabin has been upgraded with Recaro SPG XL seats and Schroth 4-point harnesses. Additional modifications include RS-style door cards and pull straps, a MOMO Mod. 07 steering wheel with spacers, illuminated switches for LED light bars, and a Chase Bays drift handbrake. The 915 RennShift performance shifter is topped with a wooden 917-style knob. Coco floor mats are fitted, and a black set of Perlon carpeting will be included. The seller notes the air conditioning system is currently inoperable; however, a used Griffiths kit will also accompany the sale. The odometer is said to have stopped working upon the sellers acquisition approximately four years ago and has since been repaired by Seattle Speedometer.
The air-cooled flat-six engine was recently enlarged to 3.4 liters as part of a top-end rebuild completed approximately 300 miles ago. This comprehensive work included the installation of ARP head studs, Mahle pistons and cylinders, a remanufactured Steve Wong DME unit, valve adjustment, replacement of distributor cap and rotor, valve cover, CV, and throttle body gaskets, as well as an oil temperature sensor. An intermittent wiring issue affecting lights and gauges was also addressed. The rear wheels are driven through a 5-speed Type 915 manual transaxle. Recent drivetrain service includes the replacement of the clutch and flywheel. Additional maintenance included the replacement of the fuel sending unit and fuel pump, installation of new front springs and spring plate bearings, multiple oil changes using Liqui Moly 20W-50, and a recent four-wheel alignment. Performance upgrades as part of the safari built encompassed a Steve Wong (911 Chips) performance chip, M&K sport exhaust, an extended-range Dansk 100-liter fuel tank, an Elephant Racing Coilover Stage 3 Kit, Von Shocks coilovers, a tire rub prevention kit, Turbo tie rods, decambered ball joints, all-new bushings, and a welded-on spring plate and shock tower reinforcement kit.
This sale will include a clean title, a used Griffiths air conditioning kit, and a black set of Perlon carpeting. The CARFAX report shows the issuance of a branded title due to the vehicle exceeding mechanical limits.
The seller would like you to know: “Ruby has been a fantastic car that's provided miles of smiles and lifelong memories that I never wouldn't have had in a normal 911. When you buy a Safari, it's as much about the experiences and adventure as it is about the car itself. This car is ready to go anywhere you want to take it. To the next custodian of this car, I hope you use it as intended and have as much fun as I did.”

Thank you all for participating in the Auction today. Also, Thank you @carwilrun for the $85K offer. We are very close on making a deal.
Wow, it’s a literal steal at 95k. If I didn’t already have 3 other 911’s I’d be pretty tempted to buy her back myself and convert my targa back to a tarmac.

Just a reminder, there are only 300 miles on a $15K top end rebuild that consisted of a 3.4 conversion. This car rips!
We're under an hour left in the Auction. Time to buckle up! Please let me know if you have any additional questions I can answer for you.
Looks like a lot of fun. GLWA!
I have to second the characteristics of a safari/rally build. You would think you lose some of the 911-ness, but it really still does the on-road stuff well with the added bonus of handling off-road stuff. Good luck with sale, hope it stays in TX so we can still see it around.
This is my old car, I see it every year at hill country ralley, and it’s been awesome to see the transformation. Whoever gets this car is going to be very happy! If you’re east coast let me know, I have a targa safari and would be happy to run the mountains of TN,GA,NC with you!
@pvgt3 Thanks! You wouldn’t believe the critters that find their way into my garage.
that’s one of the best coldstart videos, not only does that motor sound tight… But I think there’s a rattlesnake in the garage 😂
gotta love Texas
Good morning, potential buyers!
We’re about four hours from the close of the auction, and I’ll be available to answer any questions you may have during this final stretch.
I’ve just uploaded a driving video featuring some interesting camera work—my 10-year-old was the cameraman! It’s a unique point of view, but you’ll definitely get a sense of how this car handles.
Driving this morning has made me reflect on what makes this car so special. You get all the classic road-going characteristics of an air-cooled 911: that intoxicating flat-six sound, the joy of rowing through the gears, and the sheer fun of the drive. But what truly sets this car apart is its versatility. Unlike most 911s, you can take it places others wouldn’t dare—over the river and through the woods. It’s incredibly capable off-road, and the unique thrill you get from that rear weight bias and the playful way it goes sideways is unlike anything else.
If you have any last-minute questions, feel free to reach out. Best of luck—happy bidding!
@r32fan A driving video has been added to the listing page.
@r32fan Im going to attempt to get something uploaded this morning. I haven't had a spare set of hands to film anything.
Do you have a driving video?
Bid in the amount of $50,000
Bid in the amount of $30,000
@Erenzia Yes. Please contact me directly through the "contact seller" button at the top of the page.
Is this available to see in person? I am in Texas..
Thanks!
I've had the pleasure of driving and riding in this car during the Texas Hill Country Rallye a few years ago. This was a great car when @RubyRed911 purchased it, and he spared no expense to get it mechanically near perfect and making it even better with tasteful, high-end Safari mods. This is a fantastic car with a meticulous owner! Bid with confidence. Good luck, all.
Bid in the amount of $25,000
@DaveInTahoe oh sorry, I didn’t answer the question about the rear seats. The rear seats are in place just folded down. If you were going to use the back seats, you would probably want to eliminate the harness bar and the Schroth harness and go back to the regular seat belts. The front seat belts are intact. Lastly, the current seats are fixed with no sliders so if you were to use them with a back seat you would want to add those. I have a set I can include if you win.
@RubyRed911 Thanks for the reply and added detail about the structural reinforcements. Beyond replacing the front seats, what would need to be done to make the back seat area usable for small humans to giggle in while we play in the snow?
@DaveInTahoe Great Question. When I converted the car to coilovers I had the shop install/Weld on the Elephant Racing Front Sway Bar Reinforcement Kit, Rear Spring Plate Reinforcement kit, and the Rear Shock Tower Reinforcement kit. It's also got the font strut cross brace. There is no roll cage but there is a bolt in harness bar as you can see in the picture. Frankly, I'm 6'5" and cant fit in a 911 with a cage without significant modification which wasn't worth it for me.
Can you describe or provide more photos of the structural reinforcements mentioned? Is this a full roll cage? Welded vs bolted, etc? Also, sorry if I missed it, but have the rear seats been removed?
Cool and capable car. The new owner will be happy shredding this thing around, wherever you live.
Bid in the amount of $10,000
@Bruce914 Ha! Yeah, the Lack of CATs kinda stinks for the Cali folks. That’s the way I bought it. They can always be added.
Bid in the amount of $1,984
@RubyRed911 Fantastic, thank you! And yes, I missed that photo with the bumper guard off.
Looks like a fun car. With the CATS removed can the Cali folks keep it registered at your place? haha
@tommeron Thanks for the question. The bumper guards are bolted on and removable. If you’ll notice in the picture gallery there are pictures with the rear bumper guard off. The skid plates are also bolted to the bumper guards so that if they get damaged they can be replaced. The LED light bar on the roof rack is bolted on and removable. The LED light bar on the front bumper guard is bolted to the bumper guard. The LED fog lights have been adapted to an OEM surround and are removable. Everything is removable and designed to be serviced.
@rubyred911 how are the bumper additions, light bars and skid plates attached? Anything welded, or all bolted on?
@LitaSafariTX I had a little fun with it when I did this shoot last weekend. Cool that I’ve now shot a bunch of safari 911s, especially Ruby and Lita.
@LitaSafariTX One of the best days ever!!! Thanks Mike.
This car, seller, one other 911 safari, me, my safari 911, and a four other great guys did a couple hundred miles of unpaved roads during hill country rallye together a couple years back. Ruby is a great car and Christian is a great guy. If you're in the market for a well built safari 911 buy this car and drive the heck out of it! GLWTA!
This thing is sweet. Looks very unique with the painted whale tail.
Good morning, and welcome to the auction of my Safari 911 affectionately called "Ruby". I'm here to answer your questions and if you have the ability to look at the car in Austin, Im happy to work with you to arrange that. I've owned this 911 for a little over 4 years and had most of the work done on it to bring it to its current state. I believe every detail of the car is documented in the photos so its fairly represented. It's an awesome Safari, looks great, gets a ton of attention, is very capable, and ready for its next adventure. Big thing to call out is the $15K top end rebuild that was just completed and the conversion from a 3.2 to 3.4. The car currently has apprx 300 miles on that rebuild. Good Luck!
