Beginning life as a 1980 Porsche 930 Turbo Coupe, this 911 was converted into a race car under original ownership by Peter and Trevor Dawes of Dawes Motorsports in 1995. It features a custom 2.9-liter flat-six engine with twin-plug heads, a Clewett crank fire ignition system, PMO carburetors, DC 80 Dougherty Racing camshafts, and a custom exhaust system. The rear wheels are driven through a rebuilt 5-speed 915 manual transaxle with short-ratio gears, a locking differential, and a JB Racing ULTRA-LITE flywheel and clutch. The car is also fitted with fiberglass IROC-style bumpers, steel rear fender flares, carbon fiber doors, Lexan windows, 935-style front A-arms, adjustable Von Shocks RSR coilovers, adjustable sway bars, a full roll cage, a fire suppression system, a Sabelt racing seat, a WEVO shifter, and 18” Forgeline wheels. Successfully campaigned until its last race in 2021 and driven approximately 3 hours since the last engine rebuild, this twin-plug 911 race car is now being offered for auction out of Tennessee.
Finished in white with orange Carrera stripe decals, the exterior has been modified with a GT Racing fiberglass hood and front fenders, IROC-style bumpers, steel rear fender flares, and an IROC-style whale tail spoiler. Other modifications include smoothed A-pillars, 935-style mirrors, front brake cooling ducts, a front splitter, hood and decklid pins, carbon fiber doors, flush-mounted Lexan windshields, Lexan rear quarter windows, dual exhaust outlets, and tow hooks. The car rides on orange-finished 18” Forgeline wheels measuring 9” wide in front and 11” wide at the rear. An extra set of Forgeline wheels with new racing tires is included in the sale.
The stripped-out racing cockpit features a full roll cage, a Sabelt fiberglass racing seat, a three-spoke MOMO Prototipo steering wheel, a WEVO shifter, and a custom aluminum dash panel. Other accessories include a Tilton clutch and brake pedal setup with adjustable brake bias, window netting, Autometer gauges, a MYLAPS/AMB transponder, and a fire suppression system.
Power comes from a custom 2.9-liter flat-six engine built by Dawes Motorsports with 97mm Nikasil cylinders and 12.5:1 JE pistons, Pauter 4340 chromoly rods, DC 80 Dougherty Racing camshafts, Aasco valve springs with titanium keepers, and twin-plug heads with a Clewett crank fire ignition system. Other features include PMO carburetors with ITG air cleaners, a 930 oil pump, a 17-gallon fuel tank, and a custom race exhaust system. The seller states the engine produces 330 HP and revs up to 8,300 RPM. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a rebuilt 5-speed Type 915 manual transaxle with steel teeth and synchros, short-ratio gearing, a locking differential, and a JB Racing ULTRA-LITE flywheel and clutch kit with a hydraulic throwout bearing setup. The front suspension includes Elephant Racing 935-style A-arms, Von Shocks RSR coilover struts with springs, spherical adjustable strut mounts, and a through-body Smart Racing adjustable sway bar. The rear end includes 930 control arms, adjustable camber boxes, 935-style adjustable spring plates, 930 axles, an adjustable sway bar, and Von Shocks coilovers with adjustable mounts. Stopping power is handled by 930 brake calipers and cross-drilled rotors at each corner. The seller indicates the car has been driven approximately 3 hours since the last engine and transmission rebuild. Service in 2021 included replacing the fuel pump, fuel cell bladder, fuel surge tank, and re-packing the rear axles.
This race car is offered with a bill of sale, PCA and NASA racing logbooks, service records, an extra set of wheels and tires, and some spare parts.
The seller would like you to know: “Highly developed, highly competitive, and a proven winner.”

Thanks again for the insight. I knew it had to be a 66mm crank. I agree trick but not hard to build. Knoxville has some real Porsche enthusiasts. I know Todd and Rick. Good guys. I also know Don from my earliest days in Porsche. In high school I wanted to sweep the floors of the shop and drool over some Porsche eye candy. I would have done it for free. Hahahaha
@MattShaw It’s Standard 66 mm 2.0L S or E crank used from 64 through 69.
It’s a very trick engine, but not hard to build.
It seems to work very well, especially with all the wins that he has. And if you, Google, Garry Boss Porsche. You will find this.
“Gary Boss is a name associated with racing Porsches, specifically in the GT4R class. He is known for his well-engineered Porsche 911 race car, which he has raced at events like Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. His car, a GT4R-class Porsche, was often competitive against faster GT1/GT2/GT3 cars. He also received the Group 2 Worker's Choice Award at a PCA Club Racing event.”
@MattShaw Yes, That race is the only one. The engine was a full race rebuilt by Eurosport guys.
So I know it was done right!
Sorry for hijacking the chat here but the add campaign indicates 3 hours on rebuild. Looks this car ran at Road America at the HSR Vintage Festival. Is VSCDA Elkhart Lake the only racing on this engine? What was done during the rebuild and was it done in Knoxville? Thanks again for sharing.
Great info. Thanks for the details. I was wondering how they got the short stroke from the crank. Although there are several ways to get there I like the 3.0 option best. Do you have any idea what crank was used and is this the original 3.0 Turbo case? Forgive me if I missed those details. Great job responding! Appreciate knowing what you have. Sometimes the sales come up and very little known about critical elements.
@MattShaw It based on a 3.0l case. 98mm 12.5cr P&Cs with a 66mm stroke crankshaft that makes it a 2,987L.
Basically a 3.0L.
This car would be great for any kind of racing you like and be completive! HSR,SVRA,SCCA,PCA and many others!
This is the best type race car deal on the planet!!! A real Race Car!
Can’t get to Knoxville before auction close but you are giving me the info I need. I’m kinda doing the math on the displacement. I’m guessing a 2.4 case with a 2.2 crank for shorter stroke and larger displacement.
And yes, all the right stuff with a well known builder. That’s what has my interest. This sale is all about the motor. If it’s not too tired I can do amazing things with this car. My best time at Road Atlanta is 2.36 but it was consistent 2.36 in 964 Cup with 3.8 build (300hp) and less tire. But, I also suck as a driver? Hahaha
@MattShaw Yes its at ACCR and available for inspection.
@MattShaw Buyer should do a good race service on it for good measure.
It will need new belts and the fire bottle serviced also.
This has has all the right stuff on it! A PROVEN winner!
There is the logs and some records that come along with it.

Thank you for the clarification on the wheels and slicks. I see the log book postings, any service records? I’m mainly looking for the fluids that were used (oil, brake, tranny). It also appears the 930 calipers and rotors are used on all 4 corners. Any idea what pads were used? Again mainly asking to make my life easier if I land the car. Is the 911 still at Air Cooled Classics in Knoxville? Is it available for inspection?
@MattShaw Both sets of wheels and tires are the same.
Tires are Perelli’s slicks.
Additional content has been added to the gallery for this listing.
@MattShaw The tires are mounted on 2 sets of Forgeline ZX3R Wheels.
One set has one race on them and 2021 I couldn’t find the dates on them. I took a couple of photos of some numbers that I will add. The second set are new unraced stickers.
They would still be good to use. They would be a good for learning how to drive the car without screwing up a brand new set of tires. Save you thousands!
Are the extra set of wheels identical Forgelines? There is a picture of a set of Forgelines with what looks to be Dunlop slicks. Can that be confirmed. I assume all tires are aged-out?

@WGris I don’t have anything in writing from the Dawes. But I did get this from Gregory Rathe the guy
that had the car originally built by Dawe Motorsports.
“This car and its 3 liter motor was originally built from the ground up by Peter and Trevor Dawe of Dawe Motorsports in 1995, for me. In 1995 Peter Dawe famously set a class record of 58.6 at Lime Rock that stood for (5) years, on the 4th lap the car EVER turned a wheel. I very successfully campaigned and the Dawe’s maintained the car for 3 years prior to Gary Boss buying it”.

Very interesting car! Do you have documentation of Dawes ownership and modification work?
