Regarded as one of the greatest sports cars ever built and the epitome of the air-cooled Porsche 911, the Carrera RS 2.7 was created as a limited production homologation special, enabling Porsche to compete in the Special GT class of Group 4 racing. The Carrera RS is based on a lightened 911S platform featuring a fuel-injected 2.7-liter flat-six engine, revised suspension, larger brakes, rear fender flares, and a ducktail rear spoiler. One of only 1,580 units produced in total, this 1973 example was originally delivered in Berlin, finished in Grand Prix White with red accents and specified in Touring configuration with an optional electric sunroof. This car is believed to be the only RS restored by the Porsche Classic Center in Stuttgart, Germany, which began in 2004 at the factory’s historic Werk 1 building. Senior craftsmen completely dismantled and examined the car, painstakingly cleaning, repairing, or replacing every component with a genuine factory part. After completion in 2006, the car was driven approximately 2,500 miles by its owner in Luxembourg over the next 18 years before it was acquired by the seller in June 2024. Accompanied by extensive photos and documentation, this factory-restored and numbers-matching Carrera RS 2.7 is now being offered for auction out of Illinois.

The Carrera RS is based on the 911S chassis and features special thin glass, lightweight fiberglass bumpers, flared rear wheel arches, a fixed ducktail rear spoiler, and thinner-gauge steel for the fenders, roof, and hood. Porsche's Classic Center has refinished this example in its original combination of Grand Prix White paint with red Carrera script side stripes and painted 15” Fuchs wheels. Equipment includes black horn grilles, a polished driver’s side mirror, pop-out rear quarter windows, an optional electric sunroof, chrome Touring Package rear bumper guards, a “2.7” decklid grille badge, and a single exhaust outlet. Images of the restoration are provided in the gallery along with associated articles from Christophorus and Porsche Club magazines.

Inside, this Carrera RS features a Touring Package interior, which provides added comfort with standard 911S upholstery and door panels. The restored cabin includes black leather Recaro sport seats with corduroy inserts and optional headrests, three-point seatbelts, a black leather four-spoke steering wheel, manual window cranks, analog VDO gauges, a quartz clock, a heater, and folding rear seatbacks. A Porsche Classic certification plaque is mounted in the luggage compartment, reading the car's chassis number and the restoration completion date. The seller notes that all gauges and accessories are fully functional, and the odometer reflects the mileage driven since the restoration.

Factory-rated at 210 HP and 188lb-ft of torque, the air-cooled 2.7-liter flat-six engine features Bosch mechanical fuel injection and Nikasil-coated cylinders. The rear wheels are driven through a 5-speed manual transaxle. Compared to a contemporary 911S, the Carrera RS 2.7 features larger four-wheel disc brakes and a race-tuned suspension with stiffer Bilstein dampers and thicker anti-roll bars. The original engine and gearbox were completely overhauled to factory specifications during the restoration, along with all other mechanical components.

This sale will include a large collection of documentation and restoration photos, Porsche Classic literature, featured magazine articles, an owner’s manual, toolkit, spare tire, and a clean title. A trunk-mounted Porsche Classic certification plaque is highlighted by the seller, along with a custom black leather binder with brass trim that contains a letter from Porsche to the original owner, expressing appreciation and confirming the car’s restoration. Additional provenance includes appearances in Post magazine, the Porsche Club of Germany magazine, and even a commemorative postage stamp issued in Luxembourg. The car’s image has also been featured on merchandise sold by Porsche Classic, including a mouse pad, in which several examples are included with the sale.

The seller would like you to know: “This ’73 RS has quite a story. If you take the time to read through some of the provided documents, you’ll find it to be a truly outstanding example. The comprehensive documentation details the car’s acquisition and the meticulous restoration carried out by Porsche. We acquired the car from a gentleman in Luxembourg who had spent years searching for the correct, numbers-matching vehicle. In 2005, he brought the car to the Porsche Classic center with an open checkbook, determined to restore it to its original glory. At that time, many passionate enthusiasts who had been part of Porsche when the ’73 RS was first built were still involved. Everyone was excited about the project and committed to returning the car to the exact state in which it left the factory in 1973. Great care was taken to use period-correct parts. The body was stripped and meticulously brought back to its original condition, along with the engine, gearbox, and every other component. All of this was done by factory technicians dedicated to preserving the Porsche 911 story, of which the ’73 RS represents such a significant chapter.”

Having watched so many spectacular Porsches come through here and BaT, this RS makes such a unique statement. A true time capsule from 1973 ready to remind us what Porsches mission had been and would continue to be.

What a spectacular copy of Porsches racing to road history.

@Thall Thanks for bidding. The car is a certified a 73 RS by Porsche. Many parts were replaced as needed. But all stamped by the factory to match the original build. It is a solid and safe investment with this rare factory authentication.

The comments in the presentation folder translated as well as I can address this: "In order to obtain a 100% corrosion-free body , the specialists separated the roof, underbody and forebody. Underbody and roof have been completely revised. The front structure has been replaced. By the way, this was the last original front structure that was available." So the front area trunk area was replaced by the factory and this will explain why the stamping looks odd compared to stamps we see on unrestored cars.

This RS has to be the amongst the most well documented 73 Carrera RS in existence. The ownership history is extensive as is the factory certified and documented restoration. This car can be bought with 100% confidence that it is an authentic 1973 2.7 RS. The market has been plagued with fakes. The factory restoration lends confidence to the investment and lasting legacy this car possesses.

We are now looking for under dash picture requested below.

A bit late in the auction but it would be interesting to see a photo of the 7-digit production number stamped on the metal of the lower portion of the dash. I'm assuming that part would be original to the chassis.

  • fryardds 1 week, 6 daysago

@Urelfer Yes, it is strange that Mr. Enders states, "The chassis number in the bodywork is original (hand-stamped with a star)." This is clearly incorrect. The VIN stamped in the trunk of this car is plainly not original. Almost all the numbers (9, 6, 3, 4 and 2) are not the same font as original. Even the stars at each end of this VIN are larger than original. The spacing of the numbers is also incorrect.

Thank you, Christian for expressing your shared enthusiasm for this very unique factory restored Carrera RS.
Thank you also to all that are viewing and bidding. This has been a very fun car for us to own and now present to the Pcar community. If and when you finally see it, you will be amazed at how fresh and new the car presents. Stored for the last 20 years in a climate controlled garage it shows virtually no deterioration over this time. Obviously it did not need to be taken out in any type of inclement weather. I was amazed when standing under the car the other day at how clean and fresh looking the suspension and undercarriage appear. We will do a full service for the winning bidder, including new tires and any other maintenance called for.
Thank you again and good luck to all!

    Dear Porsche Enthusiast:

I am Christian Kuhn. I found this car in Luxembourg and sold it to Isringhausen.

This 2.7 RS Touring is the only compete restoration PORSCHE CLASSIC AG has done Frame up . (@ 210 EURO per work hour Porsche AG the cost of such restoration would be astronomical ).
More importantly in 2006 a lot of the Craftsman restoring the car were still around to work on this restauration. This type of Workmanship and knowledge about this 2.7RS Models is not available any more since most of the Old Craftsman have since retired or are no longer with us . At the time of restauration original parts were still available in stock at Porsche Classic .

This Porsche 2.7RS has been the “Picture child” for all Porsche Classic AG broshures Porsche Classic AG This Porsche 2.7RS Touring has been displaed by Porsche Classic at sveral Shows back in mid 2000s. . If you buy a Porsche Classic Mousepad it Shows this 2.7 RS Touring . An Original Post Stamp for the County of Luxemburg Features this 2.7 RS Touring .

This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to own a 2.7RS Touring from the Porsche factory restored by the Craftsman at Porsche Classic , of whom some were still around when this car was originally built

Congratulations to the lucky future Owner of this Porsche AG 2.7 RS Touring . In my humble German opinion this car should be in the Porsche Museum in Zuffenhausen. Because of ist Quality and history being Ground up restored by the factory in Zuffenhausen.
Best of Luck to all you Porsche enthusiast trying to get this 2.7RS Touring into your Garage !

    Herzlichen Glückwunsch 🇩🇪🇺🇸

@erictpeterson Hello, sorry, that was a misunderstanding. The vehicle was ordered new without a radio, otherwise it would have been recorded with an M number in the vehicle file. Before the restoration, there was a radio, but the Porsche was then to be restored to its original condition as a new car.

We just uploaded a picture of the engine type 911/83 stamping in the block.

  • Isringhausen (seller) 2 weeksago

You may have more experience with the 73 RS than we do, but I will try to provide some responses to your inquiries.
We have attached an invoice from Porsche for the engine and gearbox rebuilds. They reference the 911/83 engine type. A quick internet search revealed that Porsche did change production to all or some RS engines to an alloy called silumin around May of 73 when this car was built. Silumin is a common name for aluminum-silicon alloys. There is a discuss on Rennlist around this topic.

There is some discussion of reliability concerns with the magnesium cases.

We found a picture of the MFI fuel pump that was in the car prior to restoration and a picture of the data plate on the pump currently installed. Both have the same Bosch part number. It does appear to be a replacement original equipment pump.

See pictures uploaded now of engine pre-restoration. The red painted components were present then as well. Porsche matched it.

Please let us know how we can further clarify any other concerns or questions you might have. The cover letter in the presentation booklet pictured in part says, "With all our experience and our special passion for classics, we have succeeded in presenting you with your completely restored Porsche, which has not lost any piece of its character or its authenticity". This letter is then signed by Jutta Aldenhoff, Stefen Nadj and Bernhard Enders.

  • Urelfer (registered bidder) 2 weeksago

@fryardds @fryardds: Fully agree to everything you've mentioned regarding the numbers on this car. Strange that Mr. Ender believes otherwise.

  • PanchoSapien (registered bidder) 2 weeks, 1 dayago

    @Isringhausen,
I would appreciate it if you could share photos from the engine restoration process, particularly of the pistons, camshaft part numbers, and most importantly, the stamped engine code (911/83) on the block. From the listing photos, it appears that the engine case might be aluminum, whereas the correct 911/83 case for an RS should be made of magnesium. Please correct me if I’m mistaken, and kindly confirm whether the case is indeed the original magnesium version.

Additionally, I’d like to see detailed photos of the MFI fuel pump. As you know, the RS-spec unit should have an aluminum housing (unlike the magnesium used on other MFI systems), along with clear images of the BOSCH part number plate.

One more observation: I’m curious why several key components—such as the valve covers, chain housings and covers, cooling fan, and its housing—appear to be painted. That’s a bit surprising given this was a factory restoration.

Thank you in advance for the clarifications and any supporting documentation or photos you can provide.

    Regards

@1988Porsche959 It is a numbers matching car certified by the Porsche factory. Others can replace pistons and other engine parts but only Porsche can replace a faulty case and restamp it as they did originally. If another shop buys an engine case from Porsche it will not come pre-stamped with original numbers.

  • Bernhard 2 weeks, 2 daysago

    Hello dear Porsche enthusiasts,
This Porsche 2.7 Touring was one of the best restoration projects that I, Bernhard Ender, have delivered in my more than 35 years of Porsche work in Stuttgart.
We worked very closely with Porsche retirees/employees who had built the Porsche 911 RS in production in 1970.
I am happy to answer your questions.

    1) The chassis number in the bodywork is original (hand-stamped with a star).
The engine and transmission were restored true to the original with new parts/original housings matching the year of manufacture. Original defective housings were retained by the factory and destroyed. This was always a process that was documented at the factory. (Restoration folder)

    2) The 2.7-liter RS was delivered as a Touring model. Touring models do not have thin glass windows or thin sheet metal.

    3) The radio was a special order at the time of delivery, in this case without an M number.

    4) The type plate had to be removed for restoration and was reinstalled in the correct position.

    Best regards

    Bernhard Ender

    Thank you

@Webs1958speedster We are trying to talk to previous owner about his most recent service. But either way we will deliver the sold car with fresh engine oil, new tires (currently stamped 2016) , brake fluid change and fuel filter. We don't see anything else it could need.

  • Isringhausen (seller) 2 weeks, 2 daysago

Please stand by for comments coming from Bernhard Enders regarding the engine stampings, radio, Tourings with thin glass or metal and the data plate mounted near front trunk latch. Again Mr. Enders is the Porsche employee who was in charge of the restoration of this car in 2005. It is his signature on the certification plaque in the trunk and on the leading page of booklet provided with the project. Pictures of the booklet cover, first page and engine work page translated. Reading these you can begin to see the passion and pride the Porsche team had around this project.

@isringhausen Thank you for posting these additional photos. I am quite surprised to see that the engine serial number, transmission serial number, and even the stamped VIN have all been restamped. Granted these are the original numbers but many of the fonts and spacing of the numbers are clearly not original as the Factory placed them in 1973. I am a bit baffled why the Porsche Classic documents don't state this was done during the restoration.

  • Webs1958speedster (registered bidder) 2 weeks, 3 daysago

Thank you everyone for the interest in our 2.7 RS and for the comments. The documentation surrounding it’s history and restoration is exhaustive—from the original sale in 1973 through the restoration and single ownership since. This project was also very exciting for the Porsche Classic Center, which cherished the opportunity to restore this special car to factory-original build and condition. An enthusiast owner with an open checkbook made it an especially rewarding project. The story in Christophorus Magazine and the items in the Porsche Museum gift shop commemorating this unique project attest to the scope of this build within the Porsche factory sphere. See the recent letter included in the picture set from Bernard Ender, who was responsible for the project when it was completed.

It is Mr. Enders signature on the data plate in the trunk as well.

@1988Porsche959 . Thats a good question about weight penalty. I actually dont know for sure -- I'm not sure they were really weighed at the time of production which is when it matters -- but I believe that the 1st and 2nd touring weighed 975kg. 3rd series weighed 1,093kg and Lightweight weighed 900kg.

  • coldgecko (registered bidder) 2 weeks, 3 daysago

@1988Porsche959 @1988Porsche959. Yes. I dont want to undercut the seller whatsoever. That car is beautiful and the fact that Porsche did the restoration is amazing. But 1st and 2nd Series Touring are worth much more than 3rd series. A true lightweight is probably 25%-30% worth more than 1st and 2nd Touring. BTW: I did own a 959 also... @erictpeterson Yes, in touring, radio came with the car.

  • coldgecko (registered bidder) 2 weeks, 5 daysago

I own an original 73RS from Japan. 1st and 2nd series were thin metal -- 3rd series Porsche ran out of thin metal (and I thought glass too) so they used standard gage metal and glass -- and yes, the lightweight included other stuff like thin carpet, no power anything, badge on hood was a sticker, bumper did not have rubber insert, door pulls... But the metal and glass was the same in lightweight and touring for 1st and 2nd series. Third was not thin. Wonder about yours after they did the work?
