Introduced in 1970 as an enhanced variant of the iconic Beetle, the Volkswagen Super Beetle offered a longer wheelbase, improved handling, and increased cargo capacity while retaining the model’s classic charm. This 1972 example, a hangar-kept vehicle owned by a retired 747 pilot, underwent a cosmetic restoration around 2019 that included a repaint in metallic green and a reupholstered Ivory interior. Powered by a 1,600cc flat-four engine paired with an “Autostick” transmission, it comes equipped with drum brakes, 15” steel wheels, an aftermarket radio, and more. Showing under 26k kilometers (approximately 16k miles) on the odometer, this well-preserved Beetle is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Canada.
Compared to the standard Beetle, the Super Beetle features a lengthened front end and rounded fenders, allowing for increased front trunk space and a revised MacPherson strut suspension layout. This example was refinished in metallic green as part of its cosmetic restoration and is equipped with chrome bumpers and trim, a fender-mounted antenna, a driver’s side mirror, and dual exhaust outlets. It rides on 15″ slotted steel wheels fitted with polished OEM chrome hubcaps and a new set of Kumho Power Star 758 tires. Detailed images are provided in the gallery, including paint meter readings.
The interior has been reupholstered in Ivory vinyl with cloth seating inserts and matching door panels. Equipment includes a factory two-spoke steering wheel, a VDO speedometer with inset odometer, and an updated aftermarket Kenwood head unit. Additional features include manual window cranks, a front parcel shelf, glovebox storage, and rubber floor mats. All gauges and electronics are reported to be in proper working order.
Power comes from a rear-mounted, air-cooled 1,600cc flat-four engine paired with a rare “Autostick” transmission featuring a 3-speed semi-automatic gearbox linked to a vacuum-operated automatic clutch. The Super Beetle benefits from larger drum brakes than the standard Beetle and an independent front suspension with MacPherson struts and transverse control arms. The seller reports that the engine was left untouched during the restoration.
This sale will include a toolkit, a spare tire, and a Canadian registration.
The seller would like you to know: “Fun Fact: 1972 was the year the Beetle (Käfer) took the overall sales record from the Ford Model T. This specimen spent its entire life mainly within airport boundaries, always sleeping in hangars—stablemate to all kinds of special planes. It shows an original 25,600 kilometers (roughly 14,500 miles). The owner, a retired 747 pilot and restorer of pre-WWII aircraft, performed a very light restoration during COVID. The engine was left untouched, but a new rust-free spray coat was applied to the body, and the interior was redone in the same color combination. 99% of the parts are original to the car, including the gas tank. The only exception is the hubcaps—one was missing. He initially ordered a set of four from Brazil but was not satisfied with the quality, so he discarded them and ordered replacements directly from VW Germany. The car looks and feels fantastic in every way. It would fit like a glove in any high-class collection of the very best. Noah’s Ark material right here! Get it!”
