Introduced at the 1954 New York Auto Show, the Mercedes-Benz 190SL drew inspiration from the highly exclusive 300SL Roadster. It offered a new 1.9-liter inline-four engine based on the 300SL’s straight-six, along with similar suspension, engineering, and sophisticated styling. Benefitting from a recent cosmetic restoration, this 1962 example has been refinished in red with a black convertible soft top over a black leather interior. This iconic Mercedes-Benz is now available for auction by its seller out of California.

The 190SL shares its basic styling with the 300SL Roadster including its distinctive fender flares, bumper design, and single-bar front grille with a central Mercedes-Benz emblem. This example is said to have been recently refinished in red and features a new black retractable soft top and frame. It rides on 15” chrome wheels with paint-matched Mercedes-Benz emblemized hubcaps and new whitewall tires. Detailed images are provided in the gallery.

Inside, the driver is greeted with black leather along the bucket seats, door panels, and upper dashboard. A white-two spoke steering wheel is mounted ahead of a body-colored dash fascia which houses analog VDO gauges, a quartz clock, heater controls, and a “190 SL” logo radio compartment cover. Chrome trim can be found throughout, and black carpeting lines the floor. All gauges and accessories are confirmed to be in working order.

Power comes from a type M121 BII 1.9-liter SOHC inline-four carbureted engine based on the 300SL's straight-six. This engine was factory-rated at 104 HP and drives the rear wheels by way of a synchronized 4-speed manual gearbox. Other mechanical features include power-assisted four-wheel Alfin-style drum brakes and a fully independent suspension derived from the 300SL.

This sale will include a clean title.

The seller would like you to know: “Stylistically evocative of the mighty 300SL, but with a slightly less complex drivetrain, the sleek, aerodynamic, and comparatively light Mercedes-Benz 190SL was very advanced for its time. The 190SL was praised for its outstanding achievement in styling, engineering, quality of design, detailing, and workmanship, as well as the general feeling of solidity which the car immediately conveys. The open-top Mercedes-Benz was not designed as a thoroughbred sports car. Instead, it was conceived as an elegant two-seater for touring and everyday driving. Although the Mercedes 190SL was described as a roadster, it was actually a proper cabriolet with roll-up windows and a well-insulated top. A timeless classic whose beautiful styling has aged very well, the 190SL is still comfortable and competent by modern standards. The final production tally by Mercedes from 1955 to 1963 was 25,881 cars, about 10,000 of which were sold in the USA. The Mercedes-Benz 190SL is among the most desirable cars of its era. Surviving Mercedes 190SLs have become increasingly collectible in recent years, and they are much sought after all over the world.”

What body panels are original and which ones were replaced? Were the floor pans also replaced? What history might you have about restoration, ownership? factory colors? does it happen to come with a hard top? Pretty 190SL
