Lightweight and nimble, the Triumph TR3 was a motorsports success well beyond its production run from 1955 until 1962 and is cemented in history as one of the most iconic British roadsters. This 1958 example is an updated “TR3A” variant that belonged to the seller’s father, having discovered it as a barn find in the mid-1970s. Beginning in the early 2000s as a retirement project, a frame-off restoration was undertaken, which included a new interior, rebuilt shock absorbers, carburetors, brakes, a new radiator, a new convertible top, and more. The car was inherited by the seller in 2008 and has been sparingly enjoyed on summertime drives ever since. Meticulously looked-after as a family heirloom, this Triumph TR3A is now being offered for auction by its longtime owner out of Indiana.

The TR3’s bodywork includes a detachable one-piece windscreen, rear fender spats, a cowl hood vent, and chrome bumpers. The TR3A variant is distinguished by a full-width front grille, a lockable boot handle, and exterior door handles. This example was refinished in red during the restoration throughout the early 2000s, during which time new floor pans were installed, and any rust that was discovered was repaired. The black convertible soft top, side curtains, and tonneau cover have been replaced. A painted fiberglass removable hardtop is included, although the hardware needed for installation is incomplete. Noted imperfections include a small paint chip where the front hood touches the front bonnet, a small bump on the driver's rear fender, and an area of missing paint from the bottom of the right rear fender. The seller adds that the knock-off wire wheels are mounted with vintage specialty tires in 2005, and inner tubes were used for the installation.

The cabin has been restored with new seats, a new dashboard, door panels, and carpeting sourced from Moss Motors. The driver is provided with a three-spoke banjo-style steering wheel, a leather gear knob, a dashboard-mounted rearview mirror, a locking glove compartment, and a suite of analog instrumentation. An aftermarket temperature gauge has been installed, and the inoperable original gauge is included in the sale.

The 1,991cc OHV inline-four engine was fitted with a new radiator and rebuilt carburetors during the early 2000s. Power is routed to the rear wheels through a 4-speed manual transmission, and stopping is handled by front disc and rear drum brakes. The brakes and shock absorbers were rebuilt during the restoration. The seller indicates the engine may benefit from new piston rings to address some excess oil consumption, and the transmission tends to pop out of second gear when the driver releases the accelerator while cruising. Additionally, the mechanical fuel pump was replaced with an SU electronic fuel pump mounted near the gas tank.

This sale will include a clean title, a toolkit, a spare tire, a new convertible top, side curtains, a new tonneau cover and top boot, an older convertible top, and a painted fiberglass hardtop (missing hardware).

The seller would like you to know: “This car was my dad's pride and joy.  It was an honor owning it for the past 17 and my family (especially my grandkids) have had a lot of fun with it. It deserves to be driven more than it is, so it's time for a new home to create new memories.”

@Langeoriginals ironic, I’m downsizing my toys and just sold on here a 75 914 that I did a six (3.2l) conversion on.

This was the second car I wanted while attending the University of Utah. The first was a 914 Porsche of which I now have two. Driven with the right "cap" on-the-head is real style

@Quincydubois I’ll have to go trace it (not at home right now), but I believe it’s the wire I ran to the SU electric fuel pump that I mounted in the back under the tank.

Iconic post war British road car. Joyful sunny day drives but I can’t imagine how the Brits suffered through their winters in one. Few cars left greater memories for me as I drove to school through Illinois snow and ice. That wire under passenger side dash with electrical tape…was that due to gauge replacement?
