Developed by Maserati in 1947 as a two-seater racing car powered by an inline-six engine, the A6GCS won the 1948 Italian Championship driven by Giovanni Bracco at the wheel. Only 15 examples were produced between 1947 and 1953, including works racer chassis #2041, which was later converted to a 250F model renumbered as #2503 and raced by Harry Schell. This replica was purchased by the Wilson Collection from Barchetta Productions PTY LTD in Port Melbourne, Australia, in 2008 and rebuilt as a tribute to the original #2041 Maserati A6GCS lost to history. It features aluminum bodywork and an oval tube frame, while the tool-room replica engine, transmission, brakes, and suspension were constructed by the renowned specialists at Pur Sang in Argentina. Built with painstaking attention to detail and historical accuracy for a world-class private collection, this A6GCS replica is now being offered for auction out of Florida.

The car’s original chassis from Barchetta Productions was removed and replaced with a proper oval tube frame constructed by the Wilson Collection's team in 2013. The seller notes the frame was fabricated with excruciating detail to replicate the original construction, to the best of the team's ability. The car’s replica aluminum bodywork is finished in red and features a short windscreen, a chrome grille, and a polished fuel filler cap. It rides on genuine 16” Borrani wire wheels with Michelin 175/80 tires from 2013. The seller states the exterior is in excellent overall condition, apart from a minor chip near the driver’s door opening.

The bare open racing cockpit features low-back bucket seats in blue leather, a three-spoke wood-rimmed steering wheel, and a polished gated shifter assembly. Other accessories include a dashboard-mounted rearview mirror, replica Jaeger instrument dials, lap belts, and a fire extinguisher. All gauges and electrical systems are fully functional.

The car is powered by a replica 1,985cc inline-six engine featuring twin-plug ignition and a 4-speed manual transmission sourced from Pur Sang. The differential, brakes, suspension, and steering assembly are also period-correct recreations by Pur Sang. The seller notes some play in the steering wheel and a small hairline crack on the right front brake drum sleeve, which may need to be replaced.

This sale will include a vintage racing helmet, goggles, gloves, a Mille Miglia bag, and a clean Florida title for a 1953 Maserati.

The seller would like you to know: “Larry Wilson builds this car with the intention of paying homage to A6GCS chassis number 2041. Because the real chassis number 2041 was converted into a 250 F, it must have seemed fitting to Larry to have the replica built as a reference to that missing piece in history. He and his team worked hard to bring that car back to life as accurately as possible. With exceptional attention to detail, this example is accompanied by very few photo documentation and records, making it hard to know that it is exact to the nut and bolt, although it is an ideal replica. While some well-researched experts and passionate fans may be able to identify a few fine details that deviate from the original car, it is safe to say this Recreation A6GCS example truly embodies the spirit of the missing chassis number 2041."

@WilsonCollection I take it all the original invoices and expenses referred to in the sheet, will be made available to the buyer?

  • WilsonCollection (seller) 1 week, 1 dayago

@SimonSays ok i just looked at the summary sheet, that's an error, either mislabeled or something to that nature. The important thing to understand is that the motor was purchased and then later serviced/repaired and put on the dyno.

  • SimonSays (registered bidder) 1 week, 1 dayago

@WilsonCollection They're only 2-3 weeks apart, hence my question. Why would the engine be repaired in that timeframe?

  • WilsonCollection (seller) 1 week, 1 dayago

@SimonSays I believe one is the purchase and one is the repair work/ dyno

The expense sheet has 2 entries for "Engine" related to Pur Sang. I take it one of these is incorrect? Can you clarify?

@JJensen I've just added a picture of the distributer from under the dash so you can get a visual of what I mean. It has an aluminum box that bolts on to cover it. Its actually easy to service, I just did a little repair on that secondary distributor before it was listed here.

  • WilsonCollection (seller) 1 week, 1 dayago

@JJensen That is correct. There is a distributor on the back of the motor that is accessed behind a cover under the dashboard

  • WilsonCollection (seller) 1 week, 1 dayago

@RMC1 It is already registered and street legal.

  • JJensen (registered bidder) 1 week, 2 daysago

hello, beautiful replica. Where do the second set of spark plug wires go ? I see one distributor and an additional set of six plug wires that go behind the engine. Is there a second distributor somewhere ?

  • RMC1 (registered bidder) 1 week, 2 daysago

Have you gone through the process or looked into it regarding registering it with the DMV as a special vehicle.

@MarcelStillekens Thank you so much for your kind words. I just want to clarify that the reason for posting the build cost summary was to express the level of attention and seriousness given to this car. We understand that most projects never sell for the cost to build or restore. I would recommend you stick around until the end of this auction, I think you will find our reserve to be quite reasonable.

    Regards

Thank you for your message and for sharing all the links to this incredible car. Unfortunately, the $500,000 price is beyond my current budget, so I don’t think it makes sense for me to place a bid at this time.

I wish you an amazing auction and truly hope there are bidders out there with the right budget to meet the reserve.

    Kindest regards,
    Marcel Stillekens

  • WilsonCollection (seller) 1 week, 3 daysago

@MarcelStillekens Yes it has, and for a multitude of reasons. 1. The car was initially purchased as a complete replica build from Barchetta Productions, and it was a beautiful, well built, aluminum bodied car, however there were some details the owner Larry determined could be more accurate to the original car. This is when he decided to change components and construct the frame with proper oval tube framing. So some aspects of this car were constructed twice 2. The components purchased from Pur Sang were tool room replica quality. Meaning they were constructed to be almost exactly how the original components were down to the tooling used to make them. And that is expensive. That said, I am sure there are some very minor details that are not 100% exact to the real car, because for starters no Maserati A6 was exactly the same and there is a limited amount if information on these cars. But if anyone is going to get it right, it would be Pur Sang. 3. Larry and his team put a lot of effort into getting details right. Anything that couldn't be bought was made in house by craftsmen and artisans. Again, this is expensive to do.
To sum it up, this is a very detailed example of a Maserati A6 and our hope is that we will encounter someone who can truly appreciate and cherish the effort and care that has gone into it.

This car has cost $500,000 USD ???

  • WilsonCollection (seller) 1 week, 3 daysago

Goodmorning everyone. I have just uploaded pictures of the cost summary for this build, showing a sum total of over $500,000 in constructions costs. This does not include quite a lot of labor that took place in Larry's collection by his team. I've also added a picture of the engine repair/service receipt and dyno readings.

@SimonSays yes to everything you said. And yea I would say Pur Sang does fantastic work. There is some lack clarity in the records regarding where every particular component came from. Some of that is lost in memory, but we do have dialogue and bank receipts to corroborate the big items purchased from Pur Sang.

  • WilsonCollection (seller) 1 week, 3 daysago

@Sdaily59 so Larry was right around six foot, but I will say it would be a tight squeeze for someone that tall. I would say the car is probably best suited for someone that is about 5'7". There is room behind the seat, so you could have it moved back. It is fixed so some fabrication would be involved to do so. Also the pedal assembly is kind of narrow and tightly packed together. If your a tall guy, you might want to get yourself a pair of racing shoes! I hope this helps.

  • SimonSays (registered bidder) 1 week, 6 daysago

Nothing wrong with Pur Sang Argentina, in my experience. But the description says certain parts were made and provided by them though?
Seems the car was done by Barchetta, and then the Wilson Collection made a new correct chassis, and replaced various running gear by that made by Pur Sang Argentina?
