A low-production car manufacturer based in London from 1945 to 1958, Allard earned its reputation by combining lightweight British sports car chassis with powerful American V8 engines. This 1953 Allard J2X replica follows the tradition, finished in black over copper upholstery and powered by a 350ci V8 paired with a 3-speed automatic transmission. Completed in the early 1980s by Reliable Motors of Raleigh, North Carolina, the car was acquired by the seller approximately two years ago from a long-term California owner. It has since been stored in an indoor climate-controlled facility and is now being offered for auction out of Arizona showing less than 600 miles on the odometer.
This replica is finished in black and features a wide grille opening, round headlights and taillights, cycle fenders, a hood scoop with vents, and leather bonnet straps securing a long, louvered hood. A side-mounted spare tire adds to its vintage race-inspired character, while the low-cut windshield, rear-hinged bonnet, and side exhaust outlets reflect period-correct competition styling. It rides on staggered-width wire wheels with knock-off hubs and like-new Nexen N’Priz AH5 tires. Detailed images are provided in the gallery.
The cockpit features a copper leather-upholstered bench seat with matching door panels, a black-painted dashboard, and black carpeting with floor mats. Interior equipment includes a wood-rimmed steering wheel, white-faced gauges, copper seatbelts, and a coordinating copper-painted shift knob.
Power comes from a 350ci GM V8 engine driving the rear wheels through a Turbo-Hydramatic 350 3-speed automatic transmission. No outstanding maintenance items have been reported.
This sale will include a clean title.
The seller would like you to know: “The Official Registry of Allard of America states that this exact car was dated pre-Hardy Motors. Reliable Motors in Raleigh, NC built this. Makes it very hard to find. It even has the actual logo on the grill from that time (early 1980s). This car was bought from a collector in California and has been in a climate-controlled showroom in Phoenix, Arizona since purchase. It is a beautiful example of these Allard J2X replicas. This car starts up every time and the GM V8 sounds extremely healthy. It has separate keys for the ignition, hood and trunk. The underside of this car has no rust.”

@oakhurstdon Good afternoon. Our pictures captured of the Allard's underside are in the gallery. Both the undercarriage and suspension were photographed, as seen in some of the final pictures there.
Perhaps the frame/suspension question from DS266 could be better answered with underneath photos? I certainly would want to see some.
Thank you.
@DS266 Good morning, thanks for your interest in the Allard. During the time of this build, which occurred around the early 1980's, a lot of replicas were being completed with VW suspension and chassis components. A great example of this are the 356 Porsche replicas, which were Volkswagen frames and parts underneath the 356 Porsche look. The same goes for Hardy, or in this case Reliable, who built this particular J2X Replica. As for a build sheet, I am unable to provide that due to Reliable being bought out by Hardy Motors and no longer existing. I did reach out to Allard of America's registry in search of this and had a dialogue with them through emails and phone calls, where they told me how hard it is to find specifics like this for early J2X replica builds. Reliable was not as big or well-known as Hardy Motors came to be, making this J2X replica extremely rare, but unfortunately something like a build sheet for this car could not be provided to me by Allard of America. The representative from Allard of America told me Hardy Motors became so big they eventually expanded to even sell their builds in Japan, whereas Reliable was strictly based in Raleigh, North Carolina. I hope this helps.
What frame and suspension does this car ride on? Is there a build sheet specifying components?
Hello everyone. Thank you so much for stopping by to view this beauty. This car is a very early Allard J2X Replica build dating before Hardy Motors took hold of the J2X Replica production. For those who love a car's history, this has some of the most unique I've experienced in my time around cars. Reliable was the company based out of North Carolina that started this build, before Neal Hardy even had a hold of it. I like to think of this replica as the "father of Allard J2X Replicas". This car has very clean paint, no PS/PB, and the 350ci GM block sounds very healthy. Just sitting in the seat alone makes you feel like you're living in this era, and driving it is an experience I cannot put into words here. This car, and its low miles, has been in a climate controlled showroom here in Phoenix, AZ. Almost the entirety of this car screams "exclusive". They did a great job with this build. Hopefully I can answer everyone's questions, and if not I still look forward to chatting with you all. Thank you!
