Here is some information about the history of the Polly Gas chain of gas stations:
• Origins
In the late teens and early 1920s, the Polly Gas chain began as a collection of independently owned gas stations in Southern California.
• Founders
George Machris, a cigar box maker, and his brother Victor, a garage owner, founded the Wilshire Oil Company in 1914. The company started selling gasoline door to door and later became the first chain of gas stations in Southern California.
• Mascot
The Polly Gas chain's mascot was Polly the Parrot.
• End of the brand
Some sources say the Great Depression ended the Polly Gas brand, while others say it survived into the 1950s. Most agree that the brand eventually became part of the Wilshire Oil Company of Los Angeles.
• Conversion to Gulf stations
Around 1960, Gulf purchased Wilshire Oil, and the Polly stations were converted to Gulf stations.
