Available for auction is a stunning pair of Mercedes-Benz R196 "Silver Arrow" bronzes by Maitland-Smith, previously displayed at the Zimmerman Driving Museum in El Segundo, CA. These exquisite pieces are cast in solid brass, measuring 10” x 4”, and are elegantly presented on polished walnut bases with plexiglass cases measuring 15” x 6”.
Each bronze features an engraved plaque detailing the remarkable history of the legendary W196 Silver Arrow. Also included is the book Two Summers by Robert Ackerson, the definitive history of the W196. The 1954 Mercedes-Benz W196, the first of the iconic Silver Arrow series, was powered by a V12 engine with direct mechanical fuel injection, producing 290 bhp.
Driven by racing legends Juan Manuel Fangio and Stirling Moss, it dominated the track, winning 9 out of 12 races and securing two world championships. The 1955 Mercedes-Benz W196R "Silver Arrow," known as the Stromlinienwagen or Streamliner Car, featured chassis No. 196 010 00006/54 with "Type Monza" bodywork. Piloted by Fangio and Moss, it won seven Grand Prix races. In February 2025, a rare original W196 Silver Arrow was auctioned at the Mercedes-Benz Museum, fetching a record-breaking $53.9 million.
