The Cayman R provides a truly visceral driving experience through a rigid suspension, conservative weight savings, unparalleled handling, and a naturally aspired flat-six engine. One of 563 units brought to the U.S., this Cayman R comes finished in Meteor Grey Metallic and features a 6-speed manual transmission, the Sport Chrono Package, and the Bose Surround Sound System. Previously listed on PCARMARKET, this example has been meticulously maintained through the years and is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Connecticut with just under 42k miles on the odometer.

This 987.2 comes finished in Meteor Grey Metallic with factory silver contrasts and custom Porsche lettering in red. Clear paint protection film has been applied over the front bumper, hood, fenders, mirrors, and the leading edge of the roof. The paint is stated to be in excellent condition and the seller notes that the front hood and bumper have been professionally refinished (to factory spec and undetectable) only for the purpose of maintaing the meticulous standards of the previous owner . Distinctive features include a factory Aerokit, lightweight aluminum door panels, and 19” lightweight Boxster Spyder wheels. The seller adds that the example has undergone a full ceramic coating, and the slightest signs of road wear are present in the front paint protection film. Detailed images are provided in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX report.

The driver is situated in a sporty black leather and Alcantara interior with lightweight bucket seats. Staying true to its minimalist design, the Cayman R features lightweight fabric door pulls and an instrument cover delete.  With an original build sheet totaling over $73k, this Cayman R showcases the following optional equipment:

  • 64-Liter Fuel Tank
  • Automatic A/C
  • Bluetooth
  • Sport Chrono Package
  • Bose Surround Sound System
  • CDR-30 Audio System
  • Floor Mats
  • Universal Audio Interface
  • Bi-Xenon Headlights with Dynamic Cornering
  • Headlamp Cleaning System Cover Painted

This Cayman R is equipped with a mid-mounted 3.4-liter flat-six engine shared with the Cayman S. With a revised exhaust system and engine tuning, the R model develops an extra 10 HP creating a total output of 330 HP. The rear wheels are driven by way of a 6-speed manual transmission, launching the Cayman R from 0-60 MPH in approximately 4.5 seconds. The Sport Chrono Package adds variable performance settings while the factory Sport Suspension system provides a lowered ride height and superior handling capabilities. The seller adds that a Borla exhaust system has been added, along with new wipers, a new battery, an alternator by SST, and tire sensors and brake pads by Corporate Motor Sports. The CARFAX report shows a history of dealer maintenance.

This sale will include a clean title (lien).

@Efariab Yes I am a member of pca, SCCA and my favorite 000. I’ll definitely keep an eye out for that issue. It will be another feather in the R’s cap. I believe you are correct on the pricing. Just doing a little homework, and came across that red pts from bat a few months back. That video comparing the caymans I enjoyed. Happy New Year! Hopefully full of miles and smiles.

  • Efariab (registered bidder) 1 year, 11 monthsago

@Paulk1 Thanks for reaching out and happy new year to you & all your loved ones!
Yes, these cars are truly unique.
I'm a 911 fanatic, racer and collector myself, but my 2012 Cayman R in the Launch color of "Peridot Green" has a special place in my heart !
I'm the 2nd owner and the car has only 5,500 Miles on it, but don't get me wrong, I drive this car (I have driven over 3k miles since I got the car in November of 2021) and my wife who doesn't or hasn't driven my Cayman R yet, she adores this car among all of my other 911's and 944 race car .
As I mentioned it before, you may want to hang on to this car for a while I'm not sure if you'rea PCA ( Porsche club of America)for that past 35 years and PCA has a very well known monthly Magazine that goes to every member all over the nation to I believe (please don't quote me on that) over a 100,000 +/-(?) Memberships .
So, why I brought that up ? ??, hint, sometime in 2023, PCA "Panorama Magazine" will have a nice article (with some good pictures of these cars taken by the well known
PCA & other car groups photographer " Michael Alan Ross") about the Cayman R and the Boxster Spyder which by many Porsche enthusiasts, a convertible version of the Cayman R !
So, hang in there, Paul !
    Cheers,
    Essy Fariab

  • Paulk1 (seller) 1 year, 11 monthsago

@Efariab Thank you for the kind/true words. It would be great if someone else has the chance to enjoy it…I could have easily pulled the reserve, but I know how great the car is. luckily I love the care, and not in a situation where have to sell it. It’s truly a special/unique car. Everything happens for a. reason. Let’s chat offline, I’d love to discuss. Thanks again! Comments can take an auction sideways. But people like yourself help keep the focus where it should be. Thanks!

  • Efariab (registered bidder) 1 year, 11 monthsago

    @Paulk1
Sorry to see the low reserve($70K) was not met, and it's a shame that so many truly wonderful & unique cars are unappreciated and overlooked for their superficial flaws!
As I mentioned in my previous comment, these Cayman R's are and will be on some of the Porsche collectors' radar until they are very hard to find in great and attractive conditions and options like your .
If I were in your position and could hang on to this beautiful car, I would NOT sell this car now, especially at such low price of $70K !
IN my opinion, a Cayman R, is in a very special moment that was made for "one year only" and the very first car after the original late '60's "911 R" that Porsche used the "R" bagel on any of their cars !!!
So, this car also represents a the best of any 987.2 model with all the ingredients that only Porsche engineers had the green light to put in Cayman R and finish the 987.2 generation of the Cayman with a very special car, just for the very focused Porsche enthusiastsdrivers .

@PORBM-Cars my first Pcar ever was a cayman s. I’ve always loved the platform. A cayman R was the pinnacle once I heard it existed. I track a spec Boxster. It was the next step car wise moving up. Anything “limited edition” or low number production gets my attention. I still think it’s the best platform in my opinion. So why not have the best one ever made was my thought process. Then the spec is fantastic color, buckets etc. I had a 997 Gt3rs. This was the mid engine version on that to me. I’d buy and keep them all if could drive more than one at a time.

  • PORBM-Cars 1 year, 11 monthsago

Hi Paul, You’ve shared why you’re selling, would you mind sharing the reason you bought this no doubt beautiful car?

  • Paulk1 (seller) 1 year, 11 monthsago

@FawsittMotors no it was not reported as the incident was a scratch from loading items into the car. The Texas owner I became rather close with as we negotiated, and I researched with them for about two month before buying. He was very much a car enthusiast as well. The Texas gentleman who was second owner, had it during the times where dmv was essentially closed because of covid there. They were able to drive with a temporary for almost the entire time they had the car. They registered it officially and paid the tax literally as dmv opened down there, so I could purchase and transfer title.

  • FawsittMotors (registered bidder) 1 year, 11 monthsago

Could you comment on what you know of the details of the theft of the car from the previous owner. I pulled a current CarFax, and it doesn't show it, I haven't pulled an AutoCheck yet . Was it reported to the Police/Insurance company and a claim made for the damage repairs? Was/is there anything noted on this on the previous Oregon or the current Connecticut title?

    Thanks,

    JF

  • Paulk1 (seller) 1 year, 11 monthsago

@ErikG Thank you! I absolutely agree! This will be and already is regrettable. Again the only reason I’m selling is because it was too nice to track. Yes I know that’s what they are meant for…Second I have a gt3, along with gt4 rs on its way and a dedicated track car. The reason I mention this, is so bidders understand it’s not my first rodeo. I only buy cars that I feel are extremely unique/special to me. This R definitely falling into that category. Either way in my opinion, the new owner will be getting a beautiful, extremely well specd special car. So please bid confidently and best of luck!

  • ErikG (registered bidder) 1 year, 11 monthsago

Gorgeous spec! Sold mine years back and have probably regretted it more than any other car since. Fun, nimble and super rewarding. GLWA!

  • Paulk1 (seller) 1 year, 11 monthsago

@eparlet1742 I believe I’m third owner at the 36k mark. Yes under my ownership a new alternator. No electrical issues. I think that just around the time those things go. But nothing prior or after. Thanks!

  • eparlet1742 (registered bidder) 1 year, 11 monthsago

    @Paulk1, some questions.
    1. Please confirm if you purchased this car 6/20 with 25086 miles or per car fax 5/21 with 36500 miles. Trying to sort out number of owners with respect to mileage in conjunction with marketplace.
    2. PO's records indicate researching electrical system, it is noted (I think) that you replaced alternator and battery recently. Are there any electrical issues to be aware of?
    Thank you, stunning car.

@ish The car is tight as a drum. I looked at cayman R’s for two years. The slightest issue mechanical or cosmetic and I moved on. I feel confident in saying it’s one of the cleanest is the country! A 176.8 out of 180 is pretty much perfect in my opinion, at a conqours event. Looks and drive’s perfect.

    secondly, any DME available?

  • ish (registered bidder) 1 year, 11 monthsago

In the previous listing for this car in 2018, the prior owner discusses an incident in which this car was stolen - and during this incident that damage to the front trunk area took place. To bidders - supposedly by thief loading (stolen, I presume) things into the trunk wrong, not an accident. Theft aside, the PO mentioned some damage to interior trim pieces as well during this incident. From the clumsy thief. Is any damage evident today - and beyond that - something I could not tell from pictures - are there any rattles from the interior repairs? Or any rattles at all? Thank you.

@djrober I’m a NY/CT guy so not sure about smog certificates. I don’t think it would be an issue as it passes emissions here. It sounds great, but it’s not a loud wide open obnoxious exhaust.

Just an fyi. The weather looks a little warmer tomorrow. I have gentlemen coming to see the car in person tomorrow. So during that showing I will get a driving video up. The car is always garaged, covered and on a tender. It rarely sees these temperatures or any bad weather.

@Paulk1 When I was in the market I looked at Caymans and 911s. I ended up with a 911.
There was no Cayman spec like this at that time.
I'd love to have it as a second in my garage, but there's a need and desire to put a kid through college. I really wish you the best with this.

  • Paulk1 (seller) 1 year, 11 monthsago

@marcromano Do you take PayPal lol. It really is! I looked for two years trying to find this combo.

  • marcromano 1 year, 11 monthsago

Can't find anything I don't love about it. It's an absolutely beautiful spec inside and out.

@Abuong01 yes I have the stock exhaust. its obviously good to have. But the borla sounds fantastic!

  • Paulk1 (seller) 1 year, 11 monthsago

@ChrisF1 tunes make me a little nervous... But I was recently in a Deman cayman with a 3.4. It had a tune and fabspeed headers. The power and sound was tremendous!

  • Abuong01 (registered bidder) 1 year, 11 monthsago

@paulk1 Is the original Exhaust included with the vehicle. It's a beauty!

  • Paulk1 (seller) 1 year, 11 monthsago

@ceebee we had a pretty intense rain storm followed by single digit temps. I’ll get one up in the next day or so.

  • ceebee (registered bidder) 1 year, 11 monthsago

Surely, you intend to do a real driving vid?

  • ChrisF1 (registered bidder) 1 year, 11 monthsago

@marcromano send to BGB or DeMan and write a big check :)

  • Paulk1 (seller) 1 year, 11 monthsago

@ChrisF1 I’ve sent service records to Pcar. It won’t upload from my iPhone. All fluids, Pagid brakes and services done at 39,827 miles. Upgraded to Castrol srf brake fluid. I also use amsoil on all my cars.

  • Paulk1 (seller) 1 year, 11 monthsago

@marcromano I’m sure there’s plenty that can be done. If you can use all the power this thing has, you’re a better man than me lol. Deman Motorsports has some magic recipe for these cars. I’ve seen some serious power come out of that shop.

  • Paulk1 (seller) 1 year, 11 monthsago

@ChrisF1 Hi Chris, the blemish was the result of a scratch made from items being loaded into the car. So the repair was cosmetic. I do not have a before and after pictures. I will do my best to get paint meter readings in the next couple of days. We will be uploading a running walk around video, and any other documentation I have. Thank you for your interest/questions.

  • marcromano 1 year, 11 monthsago

I never much appreciated a Cayman since I'm a purist and a 911 owner. And then I saw this.
The spec is perfect. It's a stunner. I wish it had 70 + more HP.
I wonder what needs to be done to add 70+ HP to this Cayman.

  • ChrisF1 (registered bidder) 1 year, 11 monthsago

    @paulk1 a couple of questions:
    1. Do you have any before/after pix of the bumper/hood before it was painted? Reason why it was painted?
    2. Do you have paint meter readings for the rest of the car?
    3. What service history documentation do you have on the car?
    Thanks

  • Efariab (registered bidder) 1 year, 12 monthsago

As the owner of another Cayman R in Peridot green ( the Launch color) with freakishly low mile and winner of the 2022 PCA Zone 7 and Monterey Werks Reunion winner, and these are just my opinions ; The owners of any "Cayman R" in the US, may want to think twice about letting these very special Porsches (663 for north America, 61 went to Canada and 601 for the US) go and those of you who are serious in buying a Cayman R now, like this car here at Pcarmarket, do all your homework ( get the car checked, your best bet according to your budget, etc.), but don't miss the opportunity of betting/buying this car or the next on as these cars don't come by very often and it's almost guaranteed if you hang on to them, in a few short years you'll be thanking yourself that you had made a smart decision and investment !

  • Paulk1 (seller) 1 year, 12 monthsago

Any questions please feel to ask. I’m
about as neurotic as a car owner can be with condition and service. The plan was to track this car. But when it arrived it was just too clean. I didn’t have the heart to rip it apart or risk any exterior damage. The car is amazing inside and out. It scored a 176.8 out of 180 in a conqour event. Comes with a set of Michelin 4s tires and two covers indoor/outdoor. Has stock floor mats and Porsche rubber. Came with oem cargo net and rear shade. All booklets, manuals and both keys. Has everything a car of this caliber should. It will definitely make someone’s holiday and new year a special one!
