Created by Ford’s Special Vehicles Team (SVT) and Shelby Automobiles Incorporated (SAI) as a tribute to the original 1968 “King of the Road” model, the second Ford Shelby GT500KR was introduced in 2008 featuring unique equipment including a carbon fiber composite front hood, splitter, and mirror caps as well as an SVT-tuned suspension, a Ford Racing strut tower brace, and a supercharged 5.4L V8 engine producing 540 HP. This 2008 example is one of only 1,000 40th Anniversary Editions built for the U.S. in 2008 among 1,712 Shelby GT500KRs produced in total. Designated as #989, this Shelby is said to have been the last example to have come finished in Silver Clearcoat Metallic with blue stripes and was originally sold by Nichols Ford in Fort Worth. The car is said to have remained in Texas up until the seller’s purchase about two years ago. Accompanied by documentation dating back to the original ownership, this collectible Shelby Mustang is now being offered for auction by its third owner out of New Hampshire while showing under 5k miles on the odometer.
The Shelby GT500KR is distinguished by a carbon fiber composite front bonnet with functional air vents, scoops, and satin chrome hood pins inspired by the original 1968 KR. Other unique details include carbon fiber mirror covers, a carbon fiber front splitter, functional brake cooling ducts, side tape stripes, and over-the-top racing stripes. This example is finished in Silver Clearcoat Metallic accented by blue stripes and 40th Anniversary Edition badging. It rides on polished 18” Alcoa forged aluminum wheels with SVT center caps and original Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar tires which were developed specifically for the KR.
The cabin is fitted with a pair of black leather sport bucket seats featuring GT500KR logos and Shelby signatures embroidered on the headrests as well as Cobra emblems embossed on the backrests. The GT500KR is also appointed with a Shelby Racing short-throw shifter and a serialized dashboard plaque with reads the car’s individual CSM number (08KR0989). Other details include a leather-wrapped three-spoke steering wheel with red stitching, Shelby floor mat badges, HID headlights, ambient lighting, and a Shaker 1000 audio system. The seller notes the door panels were redone in 2022 and the CD player is not working properly.
The GT500KR is powered by a supercharged and intercooled version of the GT500 V8 engine which features a cold air intake, Pro-Cal engine calibration, and a specialized H-pipe exhaust for an output of up to 540 HP and 510 lb.-ft of torque. The rear wheels are driven by way of a Tremec 6-speed manual transmission and a limited-slip differential. The car also features an SVT-tuned suspension including revised springs, shocks, struts, and sway bars along with a Ford Racing strut tower brace. The seller notes an updated clutch was installed by a Ford dealer per manufacturer recommendation in 2010 (TSB-09-9-2). There are no outstanding service items reported.
This sale will include owner’s manuals, the original window sticker, a spare tire, a car cover, sales literature, and a clean title.
The seller would like you to know: “Thanks for viewing this special car! Production number 989 out of 1000 made in 2008. This production quantity is the exact as they made in 1968! I have owned it for 2 years and have maintained it in a heated garage. The mileage is what attracted me to it, and I hope you as well. Essentially a new car!”
