Equipped with a mid-mounted 3.4-liter flat-six engine and a 6-speed manual transmission, this 2006 Porsche 987 Cayman S is finished in Black over a matching interior. It features optional heated seats, the Bi-Xenon Headlamp Package, an aftermarket Bluetooth head unit, and 18” Titan7 forged wheels. Showing approximately 55k miles on the odometer, this Cayman S is now being offered for auction out of Ohio.

This 987 is finished in Black. Equipment includes optional bi-xenon headlights, a headlamp washer system, fog lights, aftermarket taillights, aftermarket dual exhaust tips, side air intakes, a speed-activated rear spoiler, red brake calipers, and aftermarket 18” Titan7 forged wheels dressed in Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 4 tires from 2022. The seller indicates higher paint meter readings on the front hood compared to the rest of the body, suggesting it was previously refinished. Detailed images are provided in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX report.

The black standard leather interior includes optional heated seats, a leather-wrapped three-spoke steering wheel, automatic climate control, cruise control, a central locking system, and an aftermarket touchscreen head unit with Bluetooth.

Factory-rated at 295 HP and 251 lb.-ft of torque, the naturally aspirated 3.4-liter flat-six engine drives the rear wheels through a 6-speed manual transaxle. The seller notes the cylinders show significant bore scoring and the engine emits some smoke on cold starts, although it still runs well. Borescope images of the cylinder liners are provided in the gallery. Routine maintenance is said to be up to date and the CARFAX report shows 23 service history records.

This sale will include owner’s manuals and a clean title.

The seller would like you to know: “Engine has significant cylinder bore scoring beyond a level that is acceptable. Car runs fine, but it does smoke some on cold start/idle.”

$12k is a good offer for a required $25k engine rebuild that would make $37k total? I don't think this car is worth that in good condition

@Bigbird I’ve got a blueprinted Lingenfelter LS engine I’ll give you a great deal on 😁

There are a number of different places that do any level of rebuild from basic to bulletproof. The cost runs the gamut.

@Bigbird There are numerous websites and forums where that info can be found just by searching the archives. If I'm a competing bidder I'm going to give you a high price while the seller will be on the lower side. In either case it's probably not fair to discuss on someone's auction.

I'm new here. Can someone tell me the approx. cost to rebuild the motor and install the IMS kit?

@G964 you’re right I didn’t read all the way back to the first comment, the latter ones suggested rebuild

  • G964 (registered bidder) 2 days, 1 hourago

    Neither is cheap though!

@cikasfm understood, but a “3.8 swap” that @FastAndys mentioned means swapping a 3.8 Carrera engine in place of the stock 3.4. Ruf, Fahrnbacher Loles used to offer cars with these 3.8 swaps. Rebuilding with more displacement is different, and there and there are pros and cons to both. With all of the failure modes on stock M96/M97 engines I would lean towards rebuild, but by a knowledgeable shop.

  • cikasfm 2 days, 2 hoursago

@G964 not an engine swap, but a rebuild with Nikasil cylinder liners and bored out to 3.8L
    Most known shops do that

  • G964 (registered bidder) 2 days, 3 hoursago

The 3.8 swap is putting in a 3.8 Carrera motor in place of the 3.4. Unfortunately the potential for bore scoring in the 3.8 is even higher.

  • KCnSF (registered bidder) 2 days, 9 hoursago

@DJSANDHU Since it needs a rebuild, might as well go a little bigger with the pistons and enlarge the engine to 3.8L. Any competent shop can do this.

@FastAndys what is the 3.8 swap you speak of?

@Lonestar67 No other known issues with the car, it drives well otherwise and we ran it through our service dept.
The customer who traded it in to us drove it from Michigan, and we've added a number of miles since then.
It could be great for thousands more miles, or not! I'd say go for it.

  • Lonestar67 (registered bidder) 3 days, 13 hoursago

So any other issues with the car? What are the odds it would make it to Seattle WA without leaving me broke down on the side of the road?

  • FastAndys (registered bidder) 6 days, 4 hoursago

    Perfect 3.8 swap candidate!
