Finished in Seal Grey Metallic over a Black interior, this 2003 Porsche 986 Boxster comes equipped with a 5-speed manual transmission as well as optional 17” Boxster S II wheels, cruise control, and a Bose digital sound system. It was acquired by the seller from its original owner about 9 years ago and benefits from meticulous service including replacements of the clutch, water pump, brakes, spark plugs, and air/oil separator. This Boxster is now being offered for auction out of Indiana with approximately 84,000 miles showing on the odometer.
The first-generation Boxster (986) received a facelift for the 2002 model year including more sharply defined bumpers and a smaller glass rear window for its convertible top. This 2003 example comes finished in Seal Grey Metallic with a black convertible top and factory optional 17” Boxster S II wheels with colored Porsche crest center caps. The seller indicates a minor collision occurred under prior ownership in 2005 which resulted in cosmetic repairs to the left front end. Another minor front-end incident took place in 2015 which necessitated replacements of the radiator, left-front headlight, and replacement and painting of the bumper cover with blending into the front fenders. Some small rock chips are noted on the passenger side hood as well as a small chip on the driver’s door, a scratch on the driver’s door handle, and some scratches on the rear bumper. The car rides on a set of Continental ExtremeContact DWS06 tires (4316) which retain approximately 6/32” of tread depth in front and 4/32” in the rear. An additional set of OEM 17” Twist wheels is included with Bridgestone Potenza SA 04 Pole Position tires. The seller adds that this Boxster was used for 4 track sessions of HPDE during their ownership. Detailed images are provided in the gallery along with a full CARAFX report.
The Black interior includes an optional Bose digital sound system as well as a cabin wind deflector, automatic climate control, cruise control, power windows, a central locking system, a heated rear window, aftermarket model logo floor mats, and a leather-wrapped three-spoke steering wheel. The cabin is described to be in good overall condition with normal signs of wear. The seller notes the passenger seat bottom has become firm, the radio tuner button is sticky, the dashboard cup holder is broken, and the sun visor vanity mirror covers are missing. The seller adds that the convertible top is fully functional, however, a technician advised replacing the struts at the last service.
A mid-mounted 2.7-liter flat-six engine delivers up to 228 HP and 192 lb.-ft of torque to the rear wheels by way of a 5-speed manual transmission. Stopping power comes from fixed 4-piston brake calipers paired with ventilated rotors at each corner. The seller indicates the oil and filter have been replaced at 5k mile intervals throughout their ownership and the air/oil separator and spark plugs were replaced at 81,479 miles. Other notable maintenance includes a coolant flush and new brake pads & rotors at 81,233 miles, clutch replacement at 76,652 miles, and water pump & serpentine belt replacement at 53,051. The seller indicates a small spot of coagulated coolant is present outside of the water pump, although the pump itself is not leaking.
This sale will include owner’s manuals, a toolkit, a spare tire, extensive service records, and a clean title.
The seller would like you to know: “Thanks for visiting my auction! I've owned this car for just under 10 years. It's been garage-kept and driven in good weather and has been well-maintained and cared for.”

@gcoshland Good question - it’s a glass rear window and it’s heated like a standard car rear window. Porsche made the upgrade to the heated glass rear window (along with other functional and styling updates) for the 2003 model year and the 986 was unchanged into the 2004 model year. 2003 model also got a real, functional glovebox.
2003 and 2004 are the last of the 986 generation of the Boxster and then Cayman platform. The 2003 base model got improvements from 2002 model mechanically as well; the 2.7L engine got better valve timing and VarioCam tech to make a few more horsepower (8 more) vs. 2002. The 2003 base model also inherited the suspension from the 2002 Boxster S.
@gcoshland No, the IMS has not been replaced. During my 10 years of ownership, there haven’t been signs of IMS failure (metal flakes in the oil, nor pieces of black plastic).
Is the rear window plastic or glass?
Has the IMS bearing been replaced ?

@RLTCo The struts for the convertible top need to be replaced - I was advised of that when I had it in at the dealership earlier this summer. The motor for the top works fine. The struts help support the top and make the operation smoother. Dealer or independent shops can do the work. Could also be done DIY if you feel comfortable doing that kind of work. The parts are available from dealers (genuine Porsche) or online.
I think I read something about a mechanical issue with the top. Please explain and was it fixed?
