One of the most highly acclaimed sports sedans ever made, the E39-generation BMW M5 features a naturally aspirated S62 V8 engine sending power to the rear wheels through a 6-speed manual transmission. This 2001 example is finished in Imola Red II over a Black Nappa leather interior. It had been registered in Ohio up until the current owner’s acquisition in 2015 when it underwent a full engine rebuild including new rod bearings, timing chains, tensioners, gaskets, and more. This M5 is now being offered for auction with approximately 89k miles on the odometer.
In comparison to a standard E39 5-Series sedan, the M5 version comes with black Shadowline trim, unique bumpers and side skirts, aerodynamic mirrors, a trunk lid spoiler, and quad-tipped exhaust outlets. This example is finished in Imola Red II and comes equipped with xenon headlights, integrated front fog lamps, front and rear parking sensors, an electric sunroof, and factory 18” Style 65 wheels in Chrome Shadow. Some curb marks are present on the rims and the wheels come dressed in a mixed set of Bridgestone Potenza and BF Goodrich g-force Sport Comp 2 tires. The seller adds that the hood and rear quarter panels have been refinished, the front bumper cover was replaced, and some corrosion repairs were carried out near the fuel filler door. Detailed images are provided in the gallery along with a CARFAX report showing minor damage to have occurred in 2020.
The cabin is appointed with Black Nappa leather upholstery complemented by a matching Alcantara headliner and burl walnut wood trim. Accessories include heated and power-adjustable front sport seats with driver position memory, a three-spoke M Sport multifunction steering wheel, automatic climate control, cruise control, power windows and mirrors, a central locking system, M5-branded floor mats and door sills, an M footrest, an M Audio system, a navigation system, and M-specific instrument gauges with a variable redline tachometer.
Rated at 394 HP and 369 lb.-ft of torque, this M5 is equipped with a 4.9-liter S62 V8 engine featuring double-VANOS variable valve timing, individual throttle bodies, hollow camshafts, and a quasi-dry-sump lubrication system. The rear wheels are driven through a Getrag 420G 6-speed manual transmission and a limited-slip differential. An engine rebuild is said to have been completed in May 2015 including new rod bearings, timing chains and tensioners, guide rail, spark plugs, a new clutch, and cylinder head and crankcase gaskets. The seller notes some corrosion is visible on the exhaust and a power steering fluid leak is present.
This sale will include owner’s manuals and a clean title.

Thanks for the quick response. The E39 is still THE best sedan ever made. Difficult and expensive to find a perfect one.

i noticed on picture 26 clear coat appears to have flaked off , how is paint on hood? I have encountered issue with clearcoat cracking on a different model M car in red
@amor1064 everything inside seems to. Radio, display (as pictured), windows and AC controls. It's a really solid car overall.
Just got a late reminder that this car was in its last hour of auction. Its a tough one to consider- lots invested but still a bit rough in places. Could be a real find for someone. Does everything work on it (aka, stereo, displays etc,)?

@dmac1132 it was in a minor front end collision. Only needed a front bumper and some trim. Overall very minor incident from the details I got from the owner.
as was pointed out in description minor damage occurred in 2020 under current ownership, can you give more detail?
@dmac1132 the owner put about 2,000 miles on the car since the rebuild. It was one of a few cars in his stable so it got driven minimally. He's now just thinning the herd.
how many miles put on vehicle since engine rebuild? If i read carfax/maintenance records correctly it looks like only a few thousand
Bid in the amount of $11,000
@Carbine123 Thank you! It's a really sharp car. It looks great in person too!
@rhwiegand The noises were resolved with the engine work. It's since been very quiet. The lights on the dash are ABS related, something the owner will have taken care of prior to the car going to its new home. Seems to be an ABS Sensor that is causing ASC to shut off and just throws about 3 lights when there is an issue. The car drives incredibly well!
Any electronic issues? Looks like there might be a check engine light on the main dash, and then some flashing by the climate control. Also any details behind the mystery noise that was repeatedly noted in the carfax? Was this solved with the engine work?
Fantastic presentation here!
Thanks @markjohn ! I'm pleased with how it looks. It was awesome to drive as well.
