Now available for auction is this 1997 Porsche 993 Carrera 4S finished in Zenith Blue Metallic over a Classic Grey full leather interior.  Reported to have been under the diligent care of the same family from new, this highly collectible 1997 example was purchased by its second and current owner in 2013 who has painstakingly maintained it ever since.  Showcasing the widened bodywork of the Turbo model with all-wheel-drive naturally aspirated performance, this sought after 993 Carrera 4S is now being offered by its seller in New Mexico while showing just under 31k miles on the odometer, accompanied by extensive service records and the original window sticker.

The desirable Zenith Blue Metallic finish on this 993 is said to be in excellent condition with full front-end paint protection film up to the A-pillars.  Following a minor cosmetic incident, the seller had the hood and front bumper professionally refinished to a very high-standard (detailed images are provided in the photo gallery).  The front windshield was also replaced in 2019 with an OEM unit.  As an all-wheel drive model, this C4S is recognizable by its widened Turbo-style bodywork.  Factory Turbo Twist wheels are equipped which come dressed in older Continental Contact Sport 2 tires.

Inside you will find a very well-kept Classic Grey full leather interior featuring supple leather seats, the power seat package and an AM/FM radio with cassette deck and 6-disc remote CD changer.  Exclusive options include an aluminum/leather shifter and handbrake lever as well as aluminum-look instrument gauges with chromed bezels.  A hardwired connection for the included Valentine One radar detector has been installed; however, the interior remains otherwise stock with all gauges and accessories working properly.

Marking the final iteration of the air cooled 911, this 993 is equipped with a 3.6 L Varioram flat-six engine rated at 282 HP.  All four wheels are driven through a 6-speed manual transmission which allows this C4S to accelerate from 0-60 MPH in as little as 5.2 seconds.  This example has been optioned with the factory Motor Sound Package which adds a more resonant air box with louder mufflers.  Replacement Bilstein PSS9 rear struts were installed under the current ownership and service records from new show proper routine maintenance.

Carfax indicates a mileage discrepancy under the “second” ownership, which the seller confirms to be an error made during a title transfer.  The car reportedly belonged to the same family from new up until the seller’s purchase in 2013, making the seller the second true owner of the car.

This sale will also include a set of 2 keys (one of which no longer works remotely), a clean title, all original books and manuals, a comprehensive collection of service records, a toolkit, battery tender, Valentine One radar detector and the original window sticker as well as a jack, spare tire and air compressor.  Presented in a stunning color combination while showing approximately 31k miles on the odometer, this 993 Carrera 4S makes an excellent choice for any discerning enthusiast.

@WRENCH.56 and to all bidders considering this car in the next few minutes. Item No. 3 can be easily resolved sending your key fobs and lock out/alarm module units to ECU Doctors in South Florida. This is a common issue that sooner or later develops in all 993's and fobs. They provide a software 'tune up' to the module and reestablish/extend the factory range, correct and clear any bugs and can replace your fob brains with one they have patented which is a direct replacement and less expensive than the Porsche's OEM units. I did this on a previous 9934S I used to own and now my 993C2S is starting to develop early symptoms so most likely will have to do the same. All of this can be done remotely with mail in and mail back hardware. I will post their link separately for those interested. This is a beautiful car and the seller has represented it very well. Hope it finds a good home. +1 on Carfax issues here. Not uncommon either. GLWA.

A reminder to bidders: The Carfax report is bogus ' Please review prior comments on that subject. You are bidding on a car with a clean history and my original files, which will be included with the sale, will prove all my claims of erroneous Carfax reporting.

@WRENCH.56 thank you for your comment! I believe it is always important to get a solid picture, and you have presented a thorough and evidently transparent representation of the car, so thank you for that. I sent you a private message also. If you have not already seen it, please acknowledge and reply.

  • WRENCH.56 (seller) 4 years, 1 monthago

@WheelGenius You are to be commended for your thorough review of the maintenance files.
    1. The first report of that vibration was 5-20-2003 and was attributed to worn tires and excessive wheel wear. Oddly, the new tires were not installed until 9-18-03. Wheel balancing and alignment were both performed then. I find no further complaint of vibration, but the tires were again replaced on 1-17-2011. On 6-6-13, shortly after my acquisition of the car, I had a 4-wheel alignment performed. No problems since, but as I mentioned on an earlier post, a wheel weight came loose. I am trying to get scheduled for wheel balancing and will get that done before shipping the vehicle to the winning bidder.
    2. The sunroof headliner repair appears on the service order dated 9-22-04. The sunroof "rattle" complaint appears on the service order dated 5-21-07, but the dealer could not reproduce the rattle and did nothing. Obviously, there is no correlation. I have never had a problem with the sunroof, nor have I heard any rattles.
    3. I replaced the battery on one key, had the dealer check the coding, but it has to be held extremely close to the door to work. I regard that key as emergency back up only. My primary remote key works perfectly.
    4. The previous owner told me that the right rear trailing arm was damaged in shipping. The 3-11-97 date of the repair order with only 45 miles on the car bears out that it wasn't a driving accident, but the work of sloppy handling during shipping. It's fixed.

  • WRENCH.56 (seller) 4 years, 1 monthago

@porsche_dreamer Yes, the bumper was resprayed. What happened was severe road rash on the bumper and gravel dings and a stain where on the hood. I botched my DIY touch up job so had everything re-painted. There was no accident. The road rash and gravel dings are the result of stuff being flung at the car by truck tires, usually at pretty high speeds.
Please note that new photos were posted this morning of the trunk interior with the carpet removed. They clearly show that there was never any damage repair. All the exterior paintwork was strictly cosmetic.

Hi, very attractive color! Nice driving video, the sound of a Porsche is always music to my ears...Here are my questions -

    1. What was the issue with the vibration/rattling? I see a couple service notes on different visits about it.
    2. Was the sunroof rattle ever addressed or did it persist? I see the headliner was also replaced, was there a correlation?
    3. Was the transmitter/remote issue resolved?
    4. Did the first owner ever share the story of how the trailing arm was cracked/damaged?

    Thanks!

@kjkaley 4. I just realized that I never properly answered the following question from your earlier post.
"4. Do you have any insight on the time period between 2004 and 2011 - there appears to be no maintenance done. I know you have had the car for 7 years and everything has probably been sorted but just curious if it just sat."
Again, that's what Carfax has to say and it's totally inaccurate.
The car did not just sit during that period. If you look at my service records posted, you will see that it was in use and serviced during that period. Note the mileage on those records. I'm sorry that the maintenance file photos do not appear in perfect chronological order, so you will have to go through them and note the real dates and mileage of each report.
    That's always fun, huh?
I reiterate, for the benefit of viewers, that all original records of maintenance , title records, etc. will be included (without any redactions) with the sale of the car.

FYI all bidders, I have an appointment to service the car at La Carrera Garage here in Santa Fe on Tuesday, Oct. 20, less than 24 hours after the auction ends. I am still trying to get an appointment to balance the tires by the 21st.
I want to turn this car over to the winning bidder in top driving condition, particularly if that person wants to drive it home. (I would LOVE to see that happen!).

    To all bidders,
I figured out the problem with the title and the resultant Carfax report concerning the title issued following the demise of the woman.
The title issued to her on 9-12-2000 is actually correct in showing the mileage at date of sale b/c it is still an original title. That was done upon release of the financing lien.
The problem lies with the fact that the bereaved husband went, not to the DMV office with the car, but processed it through a privately run service that handles these matters for those who can't face bureaucrats. He did not have the car with him so instead of entering an approximate mileage, they entered the original mileage as 24 NM (not actual mileage). Carfax picked up on this and flagged it as a rebranded title.
That said, the bottom line right now is that I have a proper title in hand.
So now I have to eat crow and apologize publicly for trash talking the NM DMV. It wasn't their fault.
That's the easy part. The hard part now is for me to try and convince Carfax to delete that flag and reference to a "rebranded " title and an inaccurate mileage reading.
I'll pursue that, but it's clear that the issue won't be resolved prior to the auction ending.

  • WRENCH.56 (seller) 4 years, 1 monthago

@DrBrian I tried all day to answer this, but was including the shop telephone number for a PPI. I learned that phone numbers cannot be sent through posted replies.
I doubt that I can get the car in for a PPI, but you can talk to Waylon at La Carrera Garage here in Santa Fe, NM. If he can get it done, I'll deliver the car to him immediately. If not, you can speak with him about the car. He knows it well. You will have to google the phone number or hit the "respond to seller" button above and I'll give you the phone number.

  • WRENCH.56 (seller) 4 years, 1 monthago

@kjkaley Yes, the vibration was fixed. BUT...when I removed, washed and reinstalled the wheels for the underside photos on my lift, I found a wheel weight on my garage floor!
I will balance the wheels if you win the bid and want to drive it home.
I have had no issues whatsoever with the sunroof and it is fully operational, although I rarely use it.
The tires are decent, but are now ten years old. I myself would not hesitate to drive them on a ten hour trip after balancing them, but would not run them at sustained speeds over 120. I would have replaced them this year but thought that the next buyer would rather mount the tire of his or her choice.

  • kjkaley (registered bidder) 4 years, 1 monthago

@WRENCH.56 - well thanks for making the extra effort to get the info across.
I was reading the shop invoices in detail and noticed an issue with a vibration at 80+ MPH. Was that ever rectified? Do you feel any type of vibration? In your video I know you hit 100MPH.
There was also a rattle in the sunroof which the dealer could not duplicate. Have you ever noticed a rattle with the sunroof open or closed?
Finally - how are the current tires? Are they in good enough shape or should they be replaced in order to make a 10+ hr road trip home should I have the winning bid and decide to drive it home?
    Thanks. KJK

I'm local to this car and personally saw it this week, have to say the car is top notch as well as the owner. Super mint well cared for example. Love the zenith blue!

@kjkaley Great questions! Sorry for the late response, but this my third attempt at a response. For reasons unknown to me, my last two attempts got lost in transmission.

I will answer your questions (yet again) in the order they are asked.

    1. The front of the car had severe road rash. The hood had two gravel chips and a stain from, I think, being parked in a garage with a leaky concrete roof leaching out lime. I attempted my own DIY touch up with a Porsche paint repair kit. I botched it so badly that I had to have it professionally repainted.

2.There are no signs of paint bubbles or rust anywhere on the car. I am familiar with chronic problems of "bubbling" in those locations on older 911s and pay particular attention to those locations when washing the car. Please enlarge the photos to full size and look carefully. I think I mentioned it elsewhere, but the car has spent it's whole life in New Mexico's high and dry climate, so rust is rarely an issue here.

    3. Yes, I can confirm that the mileage reported on the fictitious "Owner number 2" is in error. No, I have not yet addressed the issue with the NM DMV, nor with Carfax, but it is on my "to do" list. I have learned that one cannot rely upon Carfax to report all maintenance or title history with full accuracy. I will tomorrow post photos of the title chain with names and addresses redacted.

    4. This question, as well as that posed in item 3 can best be answered with the following notes on the title history:

    A. The first NM certificate of registration was issued on 4-11-97 and shows the husband and wife as owner and the finance co. as first lien holder. The mileage was listed as 24 AM (actual mileage).

    B. The second NM title was issued upon removal of the financing lien to the wife only (as a gift from the husband) on 9-12-2000. The odometer reading was listed as 24 AM! This is the first sign of incompetence on behalf of the NM MVD.

    C. The wife expired sometime in 2010. My records include an appraisal of the vehicle in the estate of the deceased wife. It bears mentioning that there are a couple of service records included with that appraisal that do not show up in my currently posted service records. I will post them tomorrow.

    D. The bereaved husband didn't drive the car car much and finally decided to sell it. In order to do so, he acquired a new title in his name only on 6-7-12. That title indicates a mileage of, you guessed it, 24 NM (not actual mileage). This clearly confirms the lack of attention to detail by the NM DMV and explains the error in the Carfax report of Owner number 3 and a non-existent "rebranded" or "salvage" title.

    E. I purchased the car on 6-3-13 and to personally went with the car to the local DMV office to assure that the odometer reading was recorded as 23,108 actual miles.

I reiterate that I will redact the names and addresses from all title documents and post them tomorrow in support of this stated record.

@Ezee34 Please accept my apologies for responding so late.
I believe your question has been answered in my lengthy reply to kjkaley, bidder just posted moments ago.
Please don't hesitate to ask if it's at all unclear.
As stated therein, I will be posting the the title documents (w/names redacted) tomorrow.

  • WRENCH.56 (seller) 4 years, 1 monthago

@turbotax There are no dings, scratches, etc. on the car save one very minor dimple on the left door. Please enlarge any photos of the left door and see if you can find it! I struggled with whether or not to repair it with a paintless dent removal technician. I've never done that for any car, so I'm uncertain as to the risks to paint quality. That said, I am hereby committing to repair it at my expense should the next buyer wish me to do so prior to delivery of the vehicle.

  • Ezee34 (registered bidder) 4 years, 1 monthago

    Details on mileage discrepancy?

  • kjkaley (registered bidder) 4 years, 1 monthago

@WRENCH.56 Terrific looking car and color. I have a few questions:
    1. Can you elaborate on the "minor cosmetic incident"? What happened? Were the parts resprayed? The original option sticker is still in place which is a positive.
    2. Are there any signs of paint bubbles or rust around the windshield molding/trim or rear side windows molding/trim?
    3. If you can confirm that the mileage title is in error, has anything been done with the state or CarFax to get that cleared up? What was the mix up?
    4. Do you have any insight on the time period between 2004 and 2011 - there appears to be no maintenance done. I know you have had the car for 7 years and everything has probably been sorted but just curious if it just sat.
    Thanks in advance.

Beautiful car! Can you let me know regarding any dings/scratches/imperfections on the car? It's hard to gauge all that from pictures alone. The car does look very clean and well cared for I must say.
