This 1996 Porsche 993 Carrera Coupe is finished in Polar Silver over Black leather and pairs a 6-speed manual transmission with its air-cooled flat-six. An engine rebuild was completed about 100 miles ago, increasing displacement to 3.8L with Mahle pistons and cylinders, along with new camshaft components, a new fuel injector, and more. The clutch was replaced within the last 5k miles, and additional services were performed. This Carrera is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Illinois.
Factory-specified in Polar Silver, this Coupe features projector headlamps with washers, fog lights, power-adjustable mirrors, Porsche-branded brake calipers, a speed-activated rear spoiler, and dual exhaust outlets. The ride height has been lowered, and the 17” Cup 2 wheels are fitted with colored Porsche crest center caps. The seller notes previous paintwork and repairs, confirming no Bondo was used. Detailed images are provided in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX report.
The Black leather interior includes a power sunroof, power windows, and an 8-way power-adjustable driver’s seat. An aluminum and carbon fiber shift knob and brake handle are also equipped. The seller notes the driver’s seat was reupholstered at approximately 40k miles.
The air-cooled flat-six was reportedly rebuilt approximately 100 miles ago to a 3.8L displacement using Mahle 993 RSR pistons, cylinders, and camshaft components. At that time, a new fuel injector, starter, engine coil, and clutch slaves were installed. The clutch has been replaced twice, most recently within the last 5,000 miles at approximately 50k miles. The alternator was replaced within the past few years, approximately 2,000 miles ago.
This sale will include a clean title, owner’s manuals, a toolkit, and a spare tire.

@Fastman72 Any idea who did the regrind? Just to confirm, no tuning has been done to accommodate for the displacement upgrade correct?
to answer the cams questions: The shop had the cams reground to RS specs.
I filled out some form with Carfax to address the error, but it appears it will be weeks before i hear anything and given its the Illinois State Emissions Testing Facility, i am expecting nothing to change. The testing facility for emissions involves you waiting in line, you exit the car, a tech "looks" at the odometer, enters it in with the plate information for the car that has populated in the computer, plugs in to the diagnostics, it passes, you return to the car and leave. The testing all happens in less than a minute, they don't issue you a printed receipt with the mileage or anything. Of course, it would have helped here if Illinois Emissions Test Facility tech had entered the approximate mileage (it appears they round up or down a lot) in August of 2018 when it last had the emissions checked. The receipts post 2012 are all missing the odometer / mileage reading - no mileage amount entered. I will upload the receipt images so PCAR can post, and i will look in the other car files see if a stray receipt made it into one of the other files folders. It has happened before. If i am able to locate a post 2012 repair receipt with the mileage in another file, i will post it. The car, its frame, body, chassis, engine, and transmission are all matching #'s and all have had less than 60,000 miles driven / operated.
@Davidmcd2018 My experience with 911s has been different, but they've all been while i've live here in the city if Chicago, which means 1st to 2nd to 1st stop, repeat for most blocks, and the city is one big grid. Additionally, the mechanics here will tell you thats the clutch replace mileage range. I've replaced like 5 clutches across three 911s - a 997 (replaced around 23k, an '87 G50 replaced around 50k (and i assume it had been replaced before that, i picked it up around 27k miles), and the 993 - two clutches., still has the dm fly wheel, and i'm going to verify cams and I will post various receipts. The other three 911s i've owned i haven't put enough miles on any of them. A buyer suggested I contact CarFax about the error with the mileage entry, which I am also going to do. Expect the photos of the receipts to appear here in the listing in the next 24 hours, and information on the cams. Thanks for your continue interest. I have responded to some addtional direct message inquiries.
So we've never got a really good verified reason for the mileage deviation and the fact there have been 2 new clutches (I've had a few 911s and never had a new clutch last less than 50k miles much less 2 clutches) and a new engine rebuild in less than 50k. Just would really like to see a verified invoice showing the mileage and need for these things. Im really interested in your car.
Petey41 - i didn't get the message you sent to me - it was erased by PCAR before i was able to read it. Yes, you are correct, the 3.8 was less intrusive and less expensive than the 4.0. i've not ever come across a 4.0, and only a few 3.8 with variocam, i've seen handle of '95 to mimic the RS, though i understand in Europe (and/or Japan) there are X51 optioned cars.
Vonmec - thank you for the offer. I communicated with PCAR yesterday.
I am just checking in. It won't be a problem to do a pre-purchase inspection, just need to make arrangements and have the car made accessible. I'll check in with them tomorrow. The week has gotten away from me, work dragging me into a sinkhole timewarp. Don't think i've checked in since Sunday or Monday.
Offer in the amount of $85,000
Would it be possible to do a pre purchase inspection prior to purchase?

@Fastman72 Hi I messaged you. Hope to ask some questions regarding your 993. Thank you

Okay fellas, i talked to Joey. he didn't send the pic because there isn't anything to send. Everything is cleans. Shows the vin number, you can check things, like abs, emissions, but nothing about mileage driven or hours driven. If you know the code or where he should look like in abs or DME to figure out if that shows mileage or hours driven or something. He's put a call in. Sorry, if my explanation isn't reasonable and logical enough, i don't know what to say. If he hears something else back, he'll let me know and I'll post it. Until then, the car will remain in the deal tank. I'm confident a buyer will show. Cheers, have a nice weekend.
I never received the photo of the reader from the shop. I asked for it immediately after I posted and talked to someone there beforehand. I'll get it, and post it to the deal tank. I said what I suspected had occurred, and what the mileage was. I believe it was Lynch Porsche, which comes up on the sheet as some mercury dealer, i'll look again, but it was Lynch Porsche here in Chicago that made the blunder and shit input is shit output with respect to data entry, Something i'll mention to anyone who knows anything about finance, and trade, and Porsche's and imports, the price of any 2005/6 Porsche 911 Carrera , in particular the more expensive models just got a lot more expensive. It took over 18 months for the parts to arrive from Germany, which are also about twice more expensive than before, and the labor has as well, and a 25% or more tariff if you know what VAT is and reciprocal agreements, then everything just got a lot more expensive and prices of these Porsche has just gone up. These engines are bullet proof, from '84-98, and i'd include the 964, and we know the problems with the 996. It will be in the deal tank. i just sold a car i probably would have sold for more had i waited a week or so at a higher price, but I spoke to Adam a couple days ago and we made a deal. I've done billions in deals, I i am a commercial real estate deal guy, a capitalist, and a Porsche head. A rising tide is measured on the top end, and all boats German just got a lot more expensive. i saw a '95 red, only ''85-'87 carreras are guards red, sold for some $80k last week. I did the engine work for a reason. Disappointed my legally binding explanation wasn't satsifactory. Maybe i should have explained i've complete billions in transactions and lawsuits and words, particularly typed online, have merit. It will be in the deal tank, and the shop has an interested party. The shop was a lot, i mean a lot of expensive cars in the warehouse, and a lot of customers. Alot of money in those weekend race cars, and fellas having the collections trucked around to be tracked where they fly to. I'll post the obd meter screen shot when he sends it. Cheers fellas. Good luck bidding.
Did we get confirmation of the actual mileage?

the screen shots from the article will be added shortly by PCAR. I did not add the photos from the article (i don't want anyone thinking they are photos from my 993). The cold start video that is in the listing - you can hear the signature RSR idling sound that is now present and wasn't before.
The 3.8 should no less than 296hp and as much as 320 hp - it has not been dyno'd. My goal was more hp. I didn't get into any exhaust modifications. There is a good article on the process with lots of details and pics that i had read that is still online at: www.aircooledbug.co.uk that is very close to my story and car down to the mileage, color and what the owner wanted. He didn't make any exhaust modifications either. The car now has that signature RSR idle sound. Although the price for the parts / kit and the labor have all gone up, i can see myself getting into another 993 and doing the same thing, or possibly going 4.0 if the engine had more miles on it, if and when my back returns to normal and i'm able to drive one. if you search google search "aircooledbug 993 3.8 rebuild" the article should appear. I snapped a couple of screen shots and i'll add them to the listing shortly. I am still waiting for the shop to send me a screen shot of the OBD reader, which i will post.
I'd imagine 3.6 to 3.8 (bore) is a easier and less expensive option than 3.6 to 4.0 (bore and stroke)?
So you wanted to go to 4.0L but settled on 3.8. What hp was your goal and what hp does the car have now at 3.8L?

@Fastman72 Thank you, much appreciated!
i spoke to the shop and they will plug in an OBD reader and he'll photograph the screen. I should have the photos in the next few hours, i will post them as soon as i receive them. Thanks for the question.
@Fastman72 Got plenty of questions on your 72 911e auction if you want to head over there
okay - i see what an OBD reader is. I'll ask G Design if they can plug one in and see if he can take a picture of the OBD reader screen. I assume this is related to the inaccurate mileage that appears on the carfax report. It is a case of bad data input, bad data output. No idea where that figure came from, and find it unimaginable that anyone could add like 120k miles to a car in that period of time. My 997 S i bought in 2007 only has approximately 26k miles on it. To this point - i haven't driven any car in the past couple weeks. I work from home, and everything i need is a 5 minute walk.
Vonmec - really don't know how to calculate or estimate the number of miles driven on the car per year. It had less and less driving when i was adding cars, coupled with the short distance from home to my office and living in the middle of Chicago, limited miles have been added to the car the past several years, in particular with the engine project (delays with parts from Covid, etc).
Petey41 - i am not sure what an OBD reader is, but i'll see if i can get the answered myself and i'll post the answer if i am able to answer it or screen shot / picture of it.
Would it be possible to post a screenshot or picture of the total hours driven as shown via OBD reader?
Thank you

@Fastman72 how many miles per year have you been driving it?
Bid in the amount of $5,993
i've just looked at the carfax report - no idea how / why the shop entered the completely wrong mileage. I can only assume the shop confused the car with some other vehicle's mileage. The engine was rebuilt to increase the displacement from 3.6 to 3.8 for additional power. I wanted to go 4.0, but i didn't want to mess with the mods, so we kept it to 3.8. Oct 2007 i bought a 997 S, which reduced my driving this 993. In 2010 I began buying more Porsches. By 2013 i had nine (9) cars while living in the middle of Chicago. A handful of rented garages scattered around the neighborhood along with everything else that comes with 9 cars, the cars began to own me. I started selling cars in 2018, and by 2020 i was down to 5 cars. At the end of 2020 i re-injured my lower back. I've had two lower back surgeries, with the 2nd/last being in February of 2021. i re-injured my back in March 0f 2024, herniating another disc. My twice surgeon did NOT recommend a third surgery. Despite the progress i have made with my back over the past year, it is still extremely uncomfortable for me to drive any 911. it took me six months before i could drive a Cayenne, and that was uncomfortable. It's the seat position and proximity to the floor in the 911s. So, I have sort of given up for the time being, and I have embarked on selling more cars. The car is in fantastic shape, no issues, no reason for any concerns.

@seller are you able to also comment on why the engine was rebuilt if only 59k total miles? Maybe the carfax question / answers will provide a clue. Thank you
Milage on car fax seems like a mistake as it went from 57k to 173k in 2 years. But that doesn’t explain how from 2012 till now it only added 2k miles. Something is off.
I noticed the car fax last reported milage is 173,000 - Odometer reads 59,000
Any explanation ?
Following my first Porsche a 964 - I purchased a new 993 in 1996.
The car on auction looks and reads well and has been used as a main car with the 173K miles reported. It appears to have been well looked after until the new Mahle pistons and rebore were completed and other parts were installed.
I would be interested to see those details and cost prior to making a bid.
Thank you.
