Among the last of Porsche’s transaxle sports cars, this 1993 Porsche 968 Coupe is one of just 548 examples to have been finished in Guards Red for the North American market. It also features a Cashmere Beige partial leather interior and a desirable 6-speed manual transmission. Upgrades include an aftermarket engine chip, stainless steel brake lines, RS Barn plug wires, an RS Barn stainless steel cat-back exhaust system, and more. Meticulously maintained by its owner of 17 years, this 968 is now being offered for auction out of Colorado with approximately 117k miles showing on the odometer.
This example comes finished in Guards Red (L80K). The body of the 968 is heavily adopted from the 944 S2, paired with a modernized front-end design that foreshadows that of the upcoming 993 model. Equipment includes pop-up headlights with visible lenses, Cup design mirrors, a painted rear wing, painted side skirts, and 17” Cup 2 wheels. Modifications include European market front turn signals, red powder-coated front brake calipers, and window tints. Additionally, the rocker panel gaskets have been replaced, and the rear hatch has been removed and re-glued. Minor paint blemishes are noted, and detailed images are provided in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX report.
Inside, the driver is situated within a Cashmere Beige partial leather interior. Equipment includes power seats, power windows & mirrors, a four-spoke leather-wrapped steering wheel, air conditioning, and a power-tilt and removable sunroof. The seller adds that a Continental head unit and a 996 shift knob have been fitted. Minor wear on the driver’s seat outer bolster is noted along with small dash cracks ahead of the instrumentation. All gauges and accessories are confirmed to be in working order.
Power comes from a naturally aspirated 3.0-liter inline 4-cylinder DOHC VarioCam engine generating up to 236 HP and 225 lb.-ft of torque to the rear wheels through a 6-speed manual transmission. Modifications include an aftermarket engine chip, stainless steel brake lines, RS Barn plug wires in red, and an RS Barn stainless steel cat-back exhaust. Furthermore, additional holes have been made within the airbox for improved airflow. Throughout the seller’s 17 years of ownership, all maintenance items are said to have been addressed, including servicing the engine mounts, steering rack, clutch, timing belt, shocks, and brake master cylinder.
This sale will include a clean title.
The seller would like you to know: “This is a wonderful car and drives like a dream. I started my Porsche journey with this 968 seventeen years ago and have spared no expense in maintenance. All records at the same mechanic are available. It has been garage-kept the whole time, rarely driven in the rain, and gets stored every winter. I recently had the opportunity to purchase a special 997.2, so I want to find a new owner who will be as passionate about this car as I am! There are very few coupes available these days, let alone manuals, NO accidents, and a spotless 17-year service history!”

@handsofstone — great comments! It is indeed a wonderfully balanced car. They were hand-assembled right alongside the 911’s and it was the largest 4-cylinder ANYONE had produced at that point. Stock output was 236 HP. As mentioned in the description, the mods on this bring that up to 255.
So, as I look at this car
...it is a really nice car. I have had (2) 968's, both Cabriolets. I had a 92 Guards Red 6 speed with black top and interior and a 94 Cab that was Gran Prix White with Blue Top and Interior and also a 6 speed. What I learned about these cars is that they are incredibly balanced near 50/50 weight distribution. How do you know,,,,,,well when you throw it in to a turn it always seemed the front end and the rear end had equal parts traction. Very stable and predictable. The engine was the largest 4 cylinder that Porsche ever made....correct me if I am wrong and it performed extremely well. Enough modern conveniences that your lady friend will be OK to go for a ride it it!!!!! Good luck to the bidders and drive it home!!!!
Black Friday! Great day to buy a Porsche!

I don’t have a current measurement, but rear pads and rotors were done at 101k miles. I drive like an old man so don’t go through them fast!
Hi beautiful car. How much left on brakes?
I recently spoke to my mechanic and he cited a change interval of 45k miles and that short of that, it’s good for 15-20 years. He’s been working on this car for almost 20 years and I go by his opinion. He specializes in Porsche’s and BMW’s and does all the work on my 968, 997, and X3’s. It was also retensioned at 110,000 miles. So I am pretty confident in its current condition.
@NorskiePete If the last timing belt was just over 12 years ago (even with low 12 k miles), that is way overdue. Is that correct and did your mechanic not identify this for replacement? I wouldn’t want to drive this long distance. Any chance you can get a change quote and possibly have this done before pickup??
@Handsofstone -- I look forward to that beer or the bourbon! My only hesitation on driving it is the weather! If you can squeeze between storms...! Our mountains just received as much as two feet of snow!
So @NorskiePete when I fly in after winning will I be OK to drive to Md. or Southern Florida!!!! If not, well it will be a cool adventure!!!!!! And it is also a must.....if I win....to take a picture....as we are having some classic Coors or some Bufffalo Trace.....I am more a Beer guy so a Hefeweizen will also work. You Ok with that deal!!!! Not sure the wife is up for it........or the Cat.......but who cares!!!!

I have 93 968 SN 366 and live 5 minutes from this car. I thought mine with less miles was clean until I saw Peter's car last month. The car is beautiful. If someone intersted in the car would like one to check something out and report back, I will.
I thought about selling my tip and going for this, but my wife wants an automatic to compliment the 997.2S.
It looks like the complete undercarriage video has been corrected. You can see the SS exhaust and the whole underside.
Timing belt was changed on 4/30/2012 at 104,643 miles.
What is the date of the most recent timing belt change?
@NorskiePete Thanks!
The wheels on the car were not original. They are, however, authentic 968-spec Cup II’s. Not repurposed from a 996 and not spacers. The Cup I’s are in great shape and are available separately.
I attached a picture of the sticker under the hood confirming compliance with CA emissions.
Additional content has been added to the gallery for this listing.
Thanks so much for the info. If you get a chance could you grab a pic of the emissions label in the engine bay/hood? It will confirm the California compliance part.

There are two videos missing: one a walk-through with the car on a rack to show the underside, the other a start up for the sound of the exhaust. I'm working to get those uploaded.

Update: tensioners were done with the chain at 104,643 miles.
Great question --timing chain was replaced at 104,643 miles. I can't tell from my paperwork to confirm chain tensioners -- I can call my mechanic on Monday. There are no oil leaks nor gaskets that need replacing. The last service was on October 8, when we did an oil change and replaced the two drive belts. Nothing else stood out as needing to be addressed. It was at that time that I shot the video from underneath while it was on the rack. I won't have the opportunity to do that with the oil pan off.
Also any chance of getting better under shots with oil pan cover removed? Any oil leaks or gaskets needing to be replaced?
When was the timing best last done? Can you also confirm that chain tensioners were replaced?
Yes, it was replaced at around 100,000 miles.
Looks great … has the water pump been replaced?
Oh, and it has never been smoked in.
The cats have not been touched as the exhaust was from the cat back and the chip was mainly a timing mapping. I have only had it in CO and it has always passed here. There are others with the same mods that I remember were in CA.
Gorgeous car and just a few questions. Prior to the cat mods was this a 50 state car (CA Emissions)? Just curious about if it would pass California rules if I put back the OE parts. Also, has this ever been a smokers car?
I should also mention that the mods I have made have been dyno’d (on another car) to produce 255 HP.
Beautiful car ! GLWTA
