Building on the foundations of its predecessor, the 944 S2, the Porsche 968 debuted in 1991 featuring a refreshed design and an updated 3.0-liter DOHC engine with VarioCam variable valve timing. Equipped with a 6-speed manual transmission, this 1992 Porsche 968 Cabriolet comes finished in Polar Silver over Marine Blue leather upholstery. Cared for by its original owner for approximately 21 years, the seller acquired the vehicle about 10 years ago and performed another major service within the last 1,500 miles including a new clutch, belts, spark plugs, and fluids. This 968 is now being offered for auction out of Florida with just over 99k miles showing on the odometer and a host of documentation.
The 968 evolved from the 944 S2, featuring a smoother rear end with rounded taillights and a new front end with 928-style pop-up headlights. According to the 968 Registry, this 1992 model is one of 134 North American Cabriolets to have come finished in Polar Silver. It includes a dark blue convertible soft top, replaced in 2005, with manual operation enabled by removing a link, easily revertible to electric operation. The car rides on 16” five-spoke alloy wheels with Continental Extreme Contact Sport SL tires, driven less than 2,000 miles. Reportedly garage-stored by both owners, the seller notes the driver’s side door was replaced due to a minor accident in 2004 as documented in the CARFAX report. Detailed images are available in the gallery.
The cabin is outfitted with Marine Blue leather upholstery. Equipment includes a central locking and alarm system, an analog clock, automatic climate control, heated mirrors and washer nozzles, and power windows, mirrors, and seats. The original Porsche OEM radio, which was inoperative, has been replaced with a high-end 8-speaker Alpine stereo system featuring CD and USB capabilities, including new coaxial speakers in the front and rear. A SiriusXM receiver has also been added, which can be removed without leaving any damage.
This 968 is equipped with a 3.0-liter inline-four DOHC engine paired with a 6-speed manual transaxle. Mechanical features include variable engine valve timing, force-sensitive power steering, power vented disc brakes with ABS, and stabilizer bars front and rear. The seller adds that the clutch, belts, spark plugs, fluids, front brakes, and battery were replaced within the last 1,500 miles. A host of additional service records are said to accompany the sale.
This sale will include a clean title, extensive service documentation, owner’s manuals, sales literature, magazines, a front-end bra, a hood protector, gloves, and a weatherproof car cover with a security cable.
The seller would like you to know: “This meticulously maintained 968 Cabriolet was cherished by its first owner for 21 years/84k miles and by me for 10 years/15k miles. There is no rust anywhere on the car! Only 2,248 968 Cabriolets were brought to the US between 1992 and 1995, making this model a rare find. It is easily maintained by Porsche dealers or independent Porsche mechanics, with parts readily available from Porsche and various suppliers. Every service, repair, and update has been documented, including the original mileage. An Excel spreadsheet details every activity performed on the car, including date, mileage, shop name, and cost. Within the last 1,500 miles, the car has received new belts, clutch, tires, plugs, fluids, battery, front brakes, and more. The convertible top is fully functional. I had a top shop remove a link to allow manual operation, which is safer, faster, and more convenient than the old electric design. It can be restored to electric operation in just a few minutes. The car features a high-end Alpine stereo with CD and USB, new coaxial speakers front and rear, and a Sirius XM reciever which can be removed without a trace. All original sales brochures, manuals, window sticker, and the 1991 issues of "Porsche Panorama," "Car and Driver," and "Road and Track" with the first new car reviews of the 968 are included. The car performs like new and feels like a turbo when the variocam reaches maximum torque. The cold A/C keeps up with South Florida heat. New Continental Extreme Contact tires provide a quiet ride with excellent traction, especially in wet conditions. This car can be a daily driver or a collectible investment that is likely to appreciate in value as it becomes even rarer. While not quite a concours winner, the car is in excellent condition. The exterior is finished in Polar Silver, and the leather interior is Marine Blue, both distinctive shades rarely seen on Porsches. Accessories include a front-end bra, hood protector, mirror gloves, and a weatherproof car cover with a security cable, all in like-new condition. This is a rare and collectible Porsche. Hello all,
About a half hour to go in my Porsche 968 auction. I’m happy to see a number of knowledgeable and interested bidders. My car will certainly make one of you very pleased with a smart purchase here today.
A couple of points of emphasis:
I am a private owner, not a dealer, not an investor, not a “flipper”. I have owned, loved, and babied this car for more than 10 years, after the original owner did the same for the car’s first 21 years.
The car has lived in Florida, all its life, always garaged, well away from the ocean, and used very sparingly. After all, it has only been driven an average of 3200 miles per year. It has never seen snow, mud, and rarely rain.
Now, at age 81, I must scale down our things and expenses, and may soon lose our third garage space, so it’s time for one of you to take over loving this car.
If you are not near to me, you can feel confident picking the car up, and driving it home, instead of having to pay to ship it. Everything is ready to go, having been serviced and had a prepurchase inspection a week before the auction.
Good luck as we enter the home stretch of the auction.
Regards,
911Going

Hi Jeff968 again,
You must have a magic touch with your tops. My son's 968, which he is still driving regularly after 28 years, and 150,000 miles, has had the top fail twice. After the second time, we did the manual conversion, and has had no problems since. In any case, you have to admit, that raising and lowering the top in a 968 is a bit tedious, especially compared to putting the top up and down in Boxster or 911 cab.
Richard356, not all of us have had those top woes. I have had 968 cabs (3 of them) since 1996 and have always had my cabriolet tops engaged with power and have never had an issue.
Hello again, Richard356,
All service done since 2013, since I owned the car is completely documented by my service receipts and a contemporaneous log. They apparently do not appear in CARFAX because the shop is independent, owned by the former lead mechanic and then service manager of our local Porsche dealership. He apparently doesn't report to CARFAX, but he too keeps a record of work that he does for his clients.
Thank you for your through response. The top issue, totally understandable. As i am sure you realize the importance of services (and receipts) I just did not see much on the CarFax after 2013.
Thank you.
Hi Richard 356
The convertible top mechanism in the 968 (and also the few 944 Cabs out there) is very fragile. It is cable operated with several pulleys, and a transmission mechanism to split the operating force between the cables on each side. If the cables get dislodged from a pulley, or even stretch unevenly, they twist the top, and jam it. If you don't stop it as soon as it jams, it breaks one or more of the top bows, and sometimes one of the lever arms. I had a 1994 968 cab from 1995 to 1999, and the top mechanism broke twice, and cost over $1000 each time to repair. The original owner of my present car, had the top repaired several times, including just before I bought it. Within the first year of owning the car, the top mechanism failed twice. My mechanic referred me to a very talented top and upholstery person, and the second time it failed, he suggested converting the top to manual operation by removing two small links, one on each side. The motorized operation is very slow and awkward, requires that the car be stopped, with the engine running and the parking brake set. It takes about 30 to 45 seconds to go up or down, all that time watching closely to be sure it is moving evenly. Doing it manually takes about 3 to 5 seconds, and there is no worry about breaking anything. It is very well balanced, and easy to put up or down. I am 81 years old, and have no problem doing it myself, easily and quickly. If I am driving with the top down, and it starts to rain, I can pull over, hop out, pull the top up, hop back in, lock the two latches, and close the windows, all within 15 seconds. The shop that I used is still in business, and I doubt that it would be more than one hour labor to reinstall the two links and balance the mechanism.
As far as maintenance records, I have nearly every repair and maintenance invoice from the original owner, and I have every one of my invoices since I owned the car, including something as small as a bottle of Porsche factory touch up paint.
In reference to the Convertible Top, can you tell me why it was disconnected, and do you have an estimate to repair the operation of the top to function with power. Also do you have any Maintenace records available with services after 2013?

Please note: Image 102 of the picture gallery is the copy of a Pre-purchase inspection (2 pages) that I requested at the certified Porsche shop that has done most of my service on this car, which indicates proper operation of the car and all accessories, and in-spec compression ratios on all cylinders. If his is not legible to you, I can resubmit it, with each page in a separate image.

I did not get, or see any photos of the damage to the car from its only accident, which occurred in October, 2004, nine years before I bought it. The previous owner described the incident as the car sliding off a curve on a rain slicked roadway, and coming to rest against a tree, which pressed against the drivers door, ruining the door, drivers window, and convertible top. The repairs were top quality, and have not resulted in any unusual wear, or functional changes in the car. Before purchasing the car I had a pre-purchase inspection done at Porsche of Orlando, and made sure that they checked for frame or alignment issues as part of that inspection. Obviously, everything came back perfect. I have had no damage or accidents other than once running up against a parking lot "stop-block" and damaging the bottom of the front air dam. This was repaired, as much as possible without paying for the original Porsche grill parts, since is not really visible, unless you get down very low in front of the car. One of the photos in the gallery show this area as it currently exists. Immediately after purchasing the car, I had a body shop remove some minor dings in the front bumper and lower rocker panels.

Additional content has been added to the gallery for this listing.
Can you post the rest of the window sticker so we can see the options?
GM 911Going, when you purchased the car, did you happen to get pictures of the damage from the previous owners accident? Any accidents/paint work during your ownership? 968 cabs certainly don’t get the attention that the coupes do, but still think that they are beautiful cruisers.
Be sure to send your son to 968register.org to join up and be part of the group.
Thanks for the heads up Sunsport, and nice to meet you jeff968. As you can tell I have watched your video closely and enjoyed it immensely. I owned my first 968 in 1995 (until 2000), and my son owns a 94 968 Guards Red/Black Cab, since 1996 which now has over 150,000 miles, and is driven regularly.
Had a laugh when the seller thanked Jeff re figures and then referred to his video and information below without knowing they were one and the same.
Nice cab BTW.
:) I'm the advocate for the PCA 968 Register and the individual being interviewed by Vu in the video.
If you have just come upon this listing, and would like to learn much more about what a Porsche 968 really is, and why it is such a unique and wonderful car, Google Porsche 968 Buyer's Guide/Tech Tactics Live
The Google page usually opens with a listing of relevant videos, and the first one is usually a one hour presentation by the Chairman of the 968 Porsche Club of America Registry. It is loaded with interesting and useful information, including tips on what to look for when buying one.
Thanks jeff968. The figures that you indicated I've seen from the PCA 968 registry, with only 2,008 North American Cabs. The figure of 2,248 was from data that I got from PCNA years ago when I first purchased this car. In either case they are rare, and hard to know how many are left in clean, drivable condition. I do get many nice comments from people about the color combination.
Nice 968 cab. To correct and add to the production figures, this cab is one of 2,008 North American cabs. 1 of 134 cabs in Polar silver, factor in the Marine blue interior and dark blue top, 1 of just 10. GLWS.
