The product of Diamond-Star Motors, a short-lived joint venture between Chrysler and Mitsubishi, the Plymouth Laser is a two-door 2+2 sports coupe that was manufactured in Normal, Illinois, alongside its sister cars the Mitsubishi Eclipse and Eagle Talon from 1989 until 1994. Advertised as “the first Plymouth of the 90s”, it was regarded as the brand’s most performance-focused model since the Plymouth Barracuda and Road Runner muscle cars of the 1970s. This 1992 example is a Plymouth Laser RS finished in Bright Turquoise Metallic and powered by a 2.0-liter 16-valve DOHC inline-four engine mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. The car has remained under the care of its original owner since new and is said to have always been garage-kept and hand-washed. It recently underwent a major service including a new timing belt and is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Massachusetts while showing just over 99k miles on the odometer.
This Plymouth Laser is finished in Bright Turquoise Metallic and can be identified as a 2.0-liter Rally Sport (RS) model by its “power dome” hood bulge, lower bodyside accents stripes, black roof with a body-colored Targa band, and 16” lace-pattern alloy wheels. Other details include pre-facelift pop-up headlamps, black body and bumper moldings, dual power mirrors, flush-mounted door handles, “Twin Cam 16 Valve” B-pillar decals, a rear window wiper, dual chrome exhaust tips, an opening hatchback, and a full-width rear light bar. The seller adds that the exterior remains in excellent original condition apart from some minor stone chips on the leading edge of the hood and one small crack inside the right front turn signal lens. Detailed images are provided in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX report.
Inside, this Plymouth features grey cloth and vinyl upholstery with matching carpets, front bucket seats, and individual rear seats. Accessories include power windows, mirrors, and door locks, automatic seatbelts, a three-spoke steering wheel, air conditioning, cruise control, a locking glovebox, an overhead dome light, and an aftermarket Sony stereo. The cabin is described to be in excellent condition with all gauges and accessories working properly.
This Plymouth Laser RS has a 2.0-liter 16-valve DOHC Mitsubishi 4G63 inline-four engine that delivers up to 135 HP to the front wheels through a 5-speed manual transmission. It comes equipped with power steering, four-wheel disc brakes, and a stainless-steel exhaust. The seller notes the tires were replaced in 2014, a new exhaust manifold was installed in 2016, the front control arms were replaced in 2018, and the battery was replaced in 2022. The most recent service was completed in December 2023 including a new timing belt, tensioners, and pulleys as well as CV axle shafts, spark plugs, and an oil change.
This sale will include owner’s manuals, a window sticker, some documentation, and a clean title.
The seller would like you to know: “Thank you for visiting. I've loved these DSM cars since they were introduced in 1989 as a 1990 model. I couldn't afford one then. Always wanted one but they seemed to disappear quickly as 2nd, 3rd, and 4th hand owners got a hold of them and didn't maintain them properly. Quite a rare find today in any condition. I present to you this one-owner car for bid. Always babied, maintained, and loved. Let me know if you have any questions as I'll be happy to answer quickly.”
