A collaborative achievement between two legendary automakers out of Stuttgart, the Mercedes-Benz 500E was created in 1989 using Porsche’s expertise to incorporate a 5.0-liter V8 engine from the SL-Class roadster with the W124 E-Class along with supporting chassis and performance upgrades. This example is among the earliest produced in the series with an approximate build date of November 1990. Finished in Blue-Black Metallic over Anthracite leather, this 500E was originally delivered in Germany and cared for by two previous owners during which time it was imported to Switzerland. A sought-after modern classic, this 500E is supported by a recent Mercedes-Benz Classic inspection and is now being offered for auction with under 120k kilometers showing on the odometer.
During an 18-day process, each 500E was hand-assembled by Porsche at Zuffenhausen, transported back to Mercedes-Benz for painting, and finally redelivered to Porsche's "Rössle-Bau" plant where the car was completed and mated to its engine. Compared to the standard W124 models, the 500E could be distinguished by its wider stance, flared fenders, side skirts, and front air dam. This example is finished in Blue-Black Metallic (199U) with grey lower body cladding and a set of extremely rare AMG 3-piece Aero III wheels which are manufactured by OZ and painted to match the exterior. The seller notes some areas of the car were previously refinished to address stone chips and signs of road-going wear, detailed images are provided in the gallery.
Inside, the 500E came luxurious appointed from the factory and includes a unique 4-passenger configuration with individual Recaro sport seats. The Anthracite leather interior of this 500E is adorned with burred walnut wood trim and features heated electrically adjustable front seats with memory, an electric rear window blind, an electric sliding sunroof, and an AM/FM cassette stereo. The seller describes the cabin to be in very good original condition with all gauges and accessories working properly.
Borrowed from the 500 SL roadster, the 500E is powered by a 5.0-liter M119 32-valve DOHC V8 engine producing up to 322 HP and 354 lb.-ft of torque. The rear wheels are driven by way of a 4-speed automatic transmission while stopping power is handled by disc brakes also taken from the 500 SL. A collection of maintenance records accompanies the sale and full service and inspection were recently carried out by a Mercedes-Benz Classic workshop.
This sale will include owner’s manuals, a toolkit, a spare tire, some documentation, and a clean title.
