Produced from 1989 to 1991, the Porsche 928 GT was a sport-oriented variant of the flagship 928 S4 grand tourer. It offered enhanced power and came standard with a 5-speed manual transaxle paired with a variable PSD limited-slip differential. This 1990 example is finished in black over matching upholstery and equips an electric sunroof, power-adjustable front seats, power windows and mirrors, automatic climate control, and several additional amenities. Modified with a Bluetooth stereo, a SharkTuner ECU chipset, and a Motorsport SLC X-pipe with high-flow catalytic converters, this GT is now being offered for auction out of New York with approximately 128k miles showing on the odometer.

This 928 is finished in black with a matching polyurethane rear spoiler and an electric sunroof. Standard equipment includes pop-up headlights, integrated fog lights, dual exhaust tips, a rear wing, a rear window wiper, and a roof-mounted antenna. The car rides on factory 16” Design 90 alloy wheels mounted with Pirelli P Zero Rosso tires. The seller notes the side moldings were removed under previous ownership before the doors were refinished. Additionally, a blemish is noted at the bottom of the passenger’s side rear window, and replacement rear hatch struts were installed in 2022. Detailed images are provided in the gallery, along with a CARFAX report noting minor damage to the front and right front in 2014.

The black partial leather interior includes power-adjustable front seats, an electric sunroof, cruise control, and automatic climate control. Other equipment includes power windows and mirrors, a leather-wrapped 4-spoke steering wheel, a digital trip computer, an analog quartz clock, a heated rear window, and a central locking system. Additionally, a Continental stereo with Bluetooth connectivity was fitted. The seller notes that one of the rear speaker covers is missing, and the brake fluid sensor warning light is illuminated.

The 5.0-liter 32-valve V8 engine in the 928 GT was specially tuned from the factory to produce up to 326 HP and 317 lb.-ft of torque stock using a modified control unit and a more aggressive camshaft layout with altered timing profiles. The GT was also offered as standard with a 5-speed manual transaxle and a variable PSD limited-slip differential. Under previous ownership, this example’s performance was modified with a SharkTuner ECU chipset and Motorsport SLC X-pipe with high-flow catalytic converters. In 2021, maintenance included an oil change, replacement of the timing belt and water pump, and installation of a PKT timing belt tensioner. After the seller's acquisition, services included replacing the coolant pressure switch and drive belts. The vehicle features four-wheel ventilated disc brakes with ABS. In March 2022, the front wheel bearings were greased and adjusted, and the brake fluid reservoir was replaced in September 2022.

This sale will include a clean title and owner’s manuals.

@914-FAN You asked “Is the original ECU chipset available?”

The answer to the question is “yes” but, your question indicates that you have assumptions, based upon the language used in the auction description, that are invalid.

“Shark Tuner” is not a chip set. It is a device. Usually it is also the case that a (reversible) change to the ECUs (yes, plural, there are two engine ECUs) that allow them to be programmed externally with a laptop via The Sharktuner.

Or, in other words, removing “Shark Tuning” is a step backwards.

@914-FAN I seem to be the 6th owner. Those comments were from a preceding owner. Prior owner to me (Toby Jones) had it from 2013 - 2021, preceding one from 2006 -2013 and I there were 3 owners before that. I have service records from new and both of the preceding owners to me seem to have been very meticulous. You can see a number of comments in the BAT auction that I bought it from in 2021. https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1990-porsche-928gt-4/
Auction ended RNM but I subsequently made a deal with the seller.

@yderochefort Carfax usually reports previous owners. Do you know how many owners? Durations?
Is the original ECU chipset available?
Also curious, you sold the 928 to Toby Jones in 2013. How do you own it now? I may just be tracking the ownership very well.
    Thank you!!

@akh19999 Just confirming that service record has been uploaded. It is the last photograph.

  • yderochefort (seller) 4 weeksago

@914-FAN Not sure about CA Smog testing and it seems to depend on the state of the car. Found this article which suggests a 928 certainly can pass the test. https://rennlist.com/how-tos/a/porsche-928-how-to-pass-smog-test-376956.

As for the other question, that rear hatch release works without fail and the AC has just been recharged so that is working as well. TBH, I do not use the sound system at all and don't feel it sounds great. If that is critical for any buyer, they will probably want to replace head and speakers with something newer.

  • 914-FAN (registered bidder) 4 weeksago

Will the 928 still pass CA smog testing?

Do all controls work/ such as rear hatch release, speaker fader knob, front & rear A/C working well?

  • yderochefort (seller) 4 weeks, 1 dayago

@akh19999 I am unsure of how to add pics to the listing or a comment but I have sent PCarmarket a photograph of the 2021 service record and asked them to upload it.

  • yderochefort (seller) 4 weeks, 1 dayago

@Cjbenedikt Thanks for pointing that out. I had not noticed it before but it appears to be from someone lifting the car incorrectly as it is an localized indentation.

  • Cjbenedikt (registered bidder) 4 weeks, 1 dayago

@seller On pic #106 there appears to be a bit of a dent on the front right hand frame. Is that related to the accident? If so, why wasn't it fixed, do you know? Or is it from the car having been lifted incorrectly? Thanks

  • akh19999 (registered bidder) 1 monthago

    Would you please

@914-FAN here is what I received from an earlier owner regarding the 2014 "damage": RE: the CARFAX history on your '90GT, I sold the car to Toby Jones in 2013. He was parked on a hill one day and his foot slid off the brake while getting out of a parallel parking slot and the right front corner of the car hit something (another car?) in front of him at 2-3 mph. It was enough to crack the front bumper, and he elected to remove the rub strips and had much of the car repainted at the time. Which really bummed me out as it had been all original paint up to that point...) But Toby was a good steward of the car otherwise. :)
