First developed as a military off-roading vehicle, the legendary Mercedes G-Class became available to consumers in 1979 and has slowly developed into a renowned luxury SUV throughout its 40-plus-year production run. This 1990 300GD Cabriolet is a unique 2-door example and comes finished in Jet Black over a grey cloth interior. Features include a 3.0-liter diesel inline-six engine, three locking differentials, a black manually operated soft top, a front brush guard, and heated seats. Said to have been imported from Italy in 2021 and fresh from a recent service, this 300GD Cabriolet is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Connecticut while showing approximately 217k kilometers on the odometer.
This 300GD Cabriolet is finished in Jet Black (9040) and features an iconic Mercedes G-series shape with two doors and a manually operated black soft top. It rides on grey-finished 15” wheels dressed in Maxxis VictraSnow SUV tires with 2017 date codes. Exterior details include black wheel arch flares, a distinctive chrome finished front brush guard, front and rear fog lights, a rear tow ball, rear mud flaps, and a driver’s side single exhaust outlet. The spare wheel is mounted to the swing-out carrier and is protected with a Mercedes-Benz emblemized cover. The seller notes scraping on the right rear bumper, and additional images are provided in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX report.
Inside, the cabin is upholstered in patterned grey cloth with Zebrano wood trim accents on the dashboard, center console, and door panels. Interior features include heated front seats, a wood-trimmed steering wheel, power windows, a lockable glove compartment, an AM/FM CD stereo, and a hydraulic jack behind the front passenger seat. The seller notes some delamination on wood surfaces, such as the shift knob. All gauges, electronics, and accessories are reported to be working properly.
This 300GD Cabriolet is equipped with an OM603 3.0-liter diesel inline-six engine that was factory rated at 113 HP and 141 lb.-ft of torque. Power is sent to all four wheels via a four-speed automatic transmission, a dual-range transfer case, and three locking differentials. Stopping power is provided by front disc brakes and rear drums. The seller reports that the vehicle is fresh from a recent service which included the replacement of fuel lines and pre-filter.
This sale will include a registration and a spare tire.

@MonAster with the right paperwork and deep pockets some companies claim they can out of state cars import cars registered in California. For cars like this, it runs between $ 10-15kHere is a good article on this topic for G-Wagons https://clubgwagen.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=8841

@Rraff3 I am affiliated with a dealer who can facilitate documents and processing yes.
are you a CT dealer and can you assist with CT registration?
Bid in the amount of $18,000
@777AIA It SHOULD be able to but it’s hard to guarantee, CA is tough on diesels and is a notoriously difficult state to get things registered in.
@777AIA The top was replaced roughly 200 miles ago at Aventura motors in the Hamptons.
I also may just be doing it wrong, it is a 6-7 step process so I may have things out of order.
@EnthusiasticEnthusiast @Colterrule So can this vehicle be registered in California smoothly with the current document existing on this car?
In @Colterrule ‘s defense, it is actually quite common for these tops to get very stiff and when putting the top down you feel as if you were going to break it by pushing it too hard into the open position. I am guessing that it can be done, but if the top is aged, may result in some cracking. Replacing a top is not a huge expense, although it is n ‘oSmittybuilt’.
@777AIA Yes,
Import docs (EPA &DOT) are included along with the original Italian documents which you are referring to.
The bill of landing is also included.
By the way, most states other than California will allow you to register a vehicle on previous Reg and a bill of sale. The import docs generally only matter when you are the FIRST U.S. registered owner.
@peter_pumpkinhead I wish you had asked these questions before the 1 hour mark…
Yesterdays requests were fulfilled this morning, hence the multiple pictures i uploaded.
Not great auction etiquette on your part in regards to your timing.
Do any additional documents come with purchase?
-original bill of lading.
-Italian bill of sale.
-Foreign registration or US title.
-Letter of approval from the NHTSA.
-DOT Form HS-7.
Not all US states will take just a registration and the Italian document you show in the images.
@Registration Correct, this vehicle is title exempt due to it’s age.
@EnthusiasticEnthusiast @Colterrule Appreciate the reply. Pictures show the areas but certainly not close ups or how it looks behind bumpers and under rubber parts. That level of transparency would have been nice. Since we are in the final minutes of bidding a comment like "Car has no visible or hidden rust in these areas" would have been nice. Same with the convertible top, even if it takes effort to fold it down and up. Bidders in auctions like this deserve some effort from the seller. My 2 cents...
ahh so there's no title, just registration?
Bid in the amount of $17,000
@777AIA It is a Maine Reg correct.
Is it a Maine registretion?
Bid in the amount of $16,000
By any chance, did you try to register in CT? I have heard issues on imports with no title…
@777AIA Brief time spent in Maine. Pickup in falls village CT.
Thanks
Has this also spent time in Maine? Where would pick up be located if successful with a purchase? Connecticut?
Bid in the amount of $15,000
@peter_pumpkinhead All pictured in gallery.
Thanks
The import documents hint that this car was registered in Northern Italy, original delivery was in Germany. Since the car sits on winter tires which indicates use in snow and salt, is there any indication of rust in the common areas? Windshield frame, wheel housing? Rear end of body, behind rear bumper?

The Top definitely isn’t all the way down in these photos. It should be sitting flush with the tailgate. What is keeping it from the rest of the travel? Can you post a couple close ups of front bar of the soft top where it latches in the front? Thank you
@Virsingh The photos with the top fully down are included in the photo gallery.
Thanks for clarifying
Hi, sorry I meant can you post photos confirming that when opening the top to its open top configuration that the soft top opens completely and folds in all the way. Thank you!

Could you post photos to confirm the top actually does go all the way down? Thank you
Hi everyone,
Thanks for your continued interest. Uploading photos previously requested momentarily.
I’ll double check tire date codes but they look much newer than an 1107 date code would imply.
Thanks again
Am I seeing correctly that tire date stamps are 1107? This really never got tires since?

@Registration Hi there,
Happy to address all your questions over the next day or so.
Engine is dry, there is some oil residue build up but nothing that looks “wet”. Lockers and low range gearbox operate as they should yes.
The soft top will retract all the way down with some muscle and the following of the the correct steps. The canvas just need to be stretched as it tends to shrink ever so slightly when down.
I’ll get underside photos and floor pan photos tomorrow or Wednesday morning at the latest.
Thanks for your interest!
Does the soft top not retract all the way down? Can you provide photos of the floorpans underneath the carpeting? Do you have any underside photos? I'd like to see the frame, especially where the shocks mount. Any noted oil leaks? Do the lockers and transfer case operate as they should?
