In the late 1980s and early ‘90s, Germany’s Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft (DTM) touring-car series featured some of the most epic battles in motorsport between BMW's M3 and the Mercedes 190E. Continually optimized throughout the seasons to maintain a competitive edge, the 190E reached its pinnacle in 1990 with the introduction of the Evolution II, equipped with a specially designed aerodynamic body kit and naturally-aspirated 2.5L 16-valve 4-cylinder Cosworth engine producing over 230 HP. One of just 502 examples produces in total, chassis #208 was sold new in Munich, Germany, and eventually exported to Japan in 1994. After a lengthy stay in Japan driven sparingly as part of several different collections, this Evo II was imported to the United States in 2018 where it was acquired by the current owner. Displaying approximately 59k kilometers on the odometer (36,660 miles), this 1990 Evolution II recently completed a major mechanical overhaul and is now being offered for auction by its owner out of New Jersey.

This Evo II is finished Blauschwarz Metallic (199), a transformative blue-black color specified for all but two examples produced. The factory wind tunnel-developed aerodynamic package includes agressive fender flares, a rear window spoiler, and a large adjustable rear wing, all of which aided in lowering drag while providing more downforce than the original Evolution model. Additional equipment includes a power sliding sunroof, a roof-mounted antenna, a special Bosch windscreen washer system, Evolution fender badging, and a dual-tipped exhaust integrated into the rear bumper. This example retains its factory 17” six-spoke alloy wheels which have been refinished and mounted with Nitto NT555 G2 tires. The finish is said to present beautifully, benefitting from a full paint correction and ceramic coating treatment.

The black interior features deeply bolstered Recaro sport seats trimmed in black leather and a Zebrano wood inlay surrounding the serialized dogleg shifter. Amenities include heated seats for the driver and passenger, air conditioning, rear headrests, heat-insulating glass, a fire extinguisher, rear-mounted speakers, and passenger lights above the rear windows. A four-spoke leather-wrapped steering wheel sits ahead of a 260-km/h speedometer, a 9k-rpm tachometer with an inset analog clock, and gauges for coolant temperature, fuel level, oil pressure, and fuel consumption. Auxiliary gauges for oil temperature and battery voltage are located in the center console. The original Becker Grand Prix stereo has been swapped in favor of a period-correct JVC cassette head unit, and the original Nokia Integral telephone system has been removed. The seller notes the track time display needs to be replaced due to failed pixels in the screen.

The Evo II is powered by a naturally aspirated 2.5L DOHC inline-four cylinder developed by Cosworth, featuring a shorter stroke and larger bore than the standard 2.5-16 model. The Evolution II is also equipped with the AMG PowerPack, which includes a revised throttle body, air intake, camshafts, engine management software, and exhaust system. Up to 232 HP and 181 lb.-ft of torque are sent to the rear wheels through a 5-speed Getrag manual transmission and a limited-slip differential. The Evolution II features a lower ride height, wider track, and larger brakes than the standard 2.5-16, as well as a hydraulic self-leveling suspension system that is height adjustable from a switch in the cabin. Since joining the current owner's collection, this 190E has received a complete mechanical overhaul including all new hoses, shocks, self-leveling suspension accumulators, gaskets, sway bar bushings, brake rotors, fluids, filters, and a new radiator at a cost of nearly $28k.

The sale of #208 will include a clean title and owner’s manuals. An icon of European motorsport, this thoroughly serviced 190E 2.5-16 Evolution II makes an excellent investment and collecting opportunity, do not miss out.

    @RNMH8R thank you!

    @Ilovecars2 - actually I am a 20 year Mercedes-Benz specialist, owning a large Mercedes-Benz repair shop for the last 15 years. I only referenced that auction as it's the most recent sale of an original car with original paint with photos to prove it. Please, ask around in the MB community, I guarantee you will hear the same response. Maybe call the Classic Center in Irvine CA for more information. My comment earlier today was meant to be purely educational, as it seems you may have been misinformed. Your vehicle is a truly great example, I just disagree you should market it as original paint. My estimation is that is why it did not meet reserve today.

    @RNMH8R so you base it off another auction? Oh, I thought you were a Mercedes paint specialist. Thanks!

  • RNMH8R 2 years, 9 monthsago

    @Ilovecars2 - somewhere between 4 and 5 mil. See the paint meter reading photos on the EVO II auction sold over on BaT in Feb. That is an original paint reading for a Mercedes of this era.

  • Ilovecars2 (seller) 2 years, 9 monthsago

    @RNMH8R So what is the factory paint reading number?

    Even with Xpel PPF (which is usually 3 mil I believe), the paint readings are almost 3x what factory paint thickness should be...

  • Ilovecars2 (seller) 2 years, 9 monthsago

    @SofiaLeo The paint has consistent levels on all the areas that don’t have xpel. The protective xpel is on the Full front, rockers and lower doors. Everything lines up perfectly. No tape lines or overspray are present and there are no flaws in the paint. The car is obsessively maintained cosmetically and mechanically.

  • BluScorpio (registered bidder) 2 years, 9 monthsago

    @Ilovecars2 There are quite a few EVO II's that have an extended front spoiler, that is an option and not a standard feature?

  • Ilovecars2 (seller) 2 years, 9 monthsago

    @BluScorpio No.

    @victrapstarr hello. Reserves are kept private for the benefit of all. We ask that you do not discuss price with the seller as it is irrelevant. The vehicle will reach its true market value at the end of auction and most likely sell. If you are a buyer, placing a bid is the best way to ensure you can get the car at a fair market price. Thank you.

  • victrapstarr (registered bidder) 2 years, 9 monthsago

    @Ilovecars2 If you don’t mind me asking, what do you project this car to reach in this auction?

  • Ilovecars2 (seller) 2 years, 9 monthsago

    @Germanyjoe I have a binder of paperwork but don’t see the formal German title.

  • Germanyjoe (registered bidder) 2 years, 9 monthsago

    Hi Ilovecars2,
    do you still have also the former German title of the car ?
    Br

  • GT3-guy 2 years, 9 monthsago

    I had the 2.3 version of this car back in 1993, the thing was so far ahead of its time it’s rediculous… this obviously is on another
    level…out of all the cars I’ve let go this hurts the most besides the 964… GLWS…

  • Ilovecars2 (seller) 2 years, 9 monthsago

    @SofiaLeo Will get on it

  • SofiaLeo (registered bidder) 2 years, 9 monthsago

    @Ilovecars2 Can you please paint meter the car and post pictures. Thank you

  • Ilovecars2 (seller) 2 years, 9 monthsago

    @SofiaLeo No accidents or paint work to my knowledge. It is available for a PPI if there’s interest

  • SofiaLeo (registered bidder) 2 years, 9 monthsago

    @Ilovecars2 NICE EVO! Has this car ever been in any accidents or had any type of paint work? Can this car be registered in California? Thank you

  • Ilovecars2 (seller) 2 years, 9 monthsago

    @Ilovecars2 I’ll answer them as best I can. ??

  • Ilovecars2 (seller) 2 years, 9 monthsago

    Hello everybody. Hope you enjoy the auction and please don’t hesitate to ask questions. I’ll ask them as best I can. Happy bidding and I hope it finds a great home!
