We are pleased to present this exceptional 1989 911 Speedster. One of only 823 '89 Speedsters built for the U.S. market, this example this left the factory on June 12, 1989 and was delivered straight to California. Before being titled, the car was relocated to Japan where it would remain for many years and be converted to kilometers as per the Japanese market. While preserved as a collector-grade car, it was then delivered to Vancouver, Canada where it remained until 2014. Now showing just 19k miles (31,752 KM), this Speedster is being offered for auction in exceptional condition on behalf of a collection in Rhode Island.
Finished in classic Grand Prix White, this Speedster is said to be in concours-level condition with minimal wear. The seller has provided detailed photos to show this car's true condition. This Speedster rides on factory black finished Fuchs wheels which come wrapped in Bridgestone Tires. This vehicle's undercarriage is reportedly rust-free and well-preserved condition.
Under the direction of Tony Lapine, Porsche's design team distinctively shaped the '89 Speedster with features such as a cut down windshield, rear quarter window delete, a minimal single layer fabric top and a twin humped fiberglass tonneau that covers the rear seat area. Additionally, while residing in Japan, this Speedster was equipped with Euro-style bumpers and trim lights for the Japanese market. Like the original 356 Speedster, this example showcases an incredibly unique and eye-catching street presence.
Inside, the black leather leather interior remains entirely stock and in exceptional condition. The dashboard and door panels are reported to be in excellent condition as well as the seat bolsters. This interior features black heated Sport Seats that are equipped with electric height adjustment as well as a handful of other factory options including: cruise control, headlight washers, heavy duty windshield cleaning, shorter gear shift lever, luggage compartment in black velour, air conditioning, Blaupunkt radio, and alarm system.
The original numbers-matching 3.2L SOHC horizontally opposed flat-six 3,164cc engine is said to run strong and idle consistently. 215HP is sent to the rear wheels via a smooth shifting 5-speed manual G-50 transmission. This engine features DME Motronic/2 electronic fuel injection, oil fed chain tensioners, independent front suspension with MacPherson struts, lower A-arms, and torsion bars. Additionally, an independent rear suspension with semi trailing arms, transverse torsion bars, tubular shock absorbers, anti-roll bar, four wheel power assist and ventilated disc brakes are also installed. With a recent service, the seller states that barely 10 miles have been driven since. This Speedster is said to be in excellent running condition.
This sale of this Speedster will include original owner’s books, spare tire, 2 keys, and Porsche Certificate of Authenticity. A clean Carfax report free of any accidents or mechanical trouble will also be provided. This car is accompanied by a clear title and is ready for prompt delivery. With its unique configuration and low mileage, this Speedster is sure to satisfy the discerning collector.

Is this smog-able in California now and able to be registered without any shenanigans (since the bids are nearly 100 grand off)?

The car was originally imported to California but sold immediately to Japan where it remained in a collection for 25 years. It was then re-imported in 2014 with about the existing mileage to BC Canada into a private collection. We purchased it a year later for display at the Newport Car Museum where it has been on display for the past 2 1/2 years. It's spot was taken by a 1956 Porsche Speedster.
@NPTCM Can you let me know what history both ownership and service comes with the Speedster?
There is no MPH speedo, and there is no options sticker under the hood. We assume that all conversion work was done for export to japan.
@cartech I haven't heard anything back yet.
Bid in the amount of $72,000
@fjamoroso Did you ever obtain the options list? The rear Porsche reflector is USA spec, Euro would have had rear fog lights. Also, the serial number of European would have been WP0ZZZ... if I am correct. It seems very nice, is there a MPH speedo that was replaced for KM speedo? Can the seller shed any more light in this and which would make it a bit more comfortable to bid?
Bid in the amount of $60,000
Bid in the amount of $35,000
Also, third brake light / CHMSL is MIA and fuel / oil combo gauge doesn't appear to be original and likely replaced with an earlier combo gauge (unit shown has "R" instead of fuel pump icon at bottom of fuel scale, oil scale labelled "OEL" instead of "OIL" and "Unleaded Fuel Only" sticker MIA).
Originally delivered in CA. Can we see a picture of the under hood options sticker? RoW: bumperettes, rear turn signal lenses, front fender turn signal side markers, H4 headlights, and front US side markers deleted... Was that work all done as part of conversion for Japan? Also, heat shield on catalytic converter MIA?
