Built by Mercedes-Benz from 1979 until 1991, the W126 remains the longest-produced S-Class generation to date and is renowned for its exceptional build quality and craftsmanship. Not sure if this is for every year, but some late W126s came originally with a Becker unit with a built-in amp. That amp is not compatible with an aftermarket unit.
Is there an aftermarket amp installed? Or is the sound "flat"?
