We are pleased to present this 1988 Porsche 944 Turbo finished in Satin Black Metallic over light grey partial leather interior. Regarded by many to be one of the best driving experiences available in the 1980s, the 951 featured near 50/50 weight distribution, a water cooled turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine, and a 5-speed manual gearbox. This two owner example was purchased by the seller from the original owner in November of 2019. Since acquiring the car the seller has carried out a number of services in order to get the car into great running condition. Some of the notable service items include new tires, new water and fuel pumps, a full tuneup and a full air conditioning service. Now with just under 60k miles showing on the odometer this 944 Turbo is now being offered here for auction by its seller out of South Carolina.
Among 944, the Turbo models can be identified by their aerodynamically revised nose with integrated fog lights, body-colored diffuser located beneath the rear bumper, and “Turbo” badging on the rear end. This example is finished in Satin Black Metallic, which is said to remain in very good condition while showing typical small chips at the front end. Detailed images are provided in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX report. This Turbo rides on reconditioned factory 16” “Phone Dial” wheels which come dressed in Michelin tires with less than 4k miles driven on them.
Inside, this 944 features a light grey partial leather interior with a contrasting black dashboard and upper door panels. Equippment includes an electric sunroof, automatic cruise control, a rear window wiper and an aftermarket Alpine head unit. The cabin is said to remain in excellent condition with no tears or excessive wear, and the seller confirms that all features remain functional. The gauge cluster was sent out for repair in 2020 due to an inoperable tempurature and boost gauge.
Power comes from a water cooled turbocharged 2.5 L inline four-cylinder engine that sends up to 220 HP to the rear wheels through a 5-speed manual transaxle. The 944 Turbo comes standard with a reinforced gearbox, external oil coolers, a slightly stiffer suspension, and fixed 4-piston brakes borrowed from the 911. The timing belt was replaced at 54,653 miles under previous ownership, and since acquiring the car, the seller has added a new battery, a set of tires, new water and fuel pumps, and completed a full tune up.
This sale will include service records, owners manuals, two keys, original window sticker, tool kit, air compressor, spare tire and a custom car cover. For any enthusiast in search of a vintage transaxle Porsche, this well preserved and thoroughly serviced 944 Turbo is not to be overlooked.

@Bruce944 Yep that was me...hope you dodged the storms
Oh, sorry, didn't see the newer offer.
@Bruce944 I am the one who put the highest offer in, I am in San Antonio, TX.
Hey N16MT….are you the one who made the latest bid on my car? If so, I’m golfing this morning and will check in after.
I live in Columbia, SC
Offer in the amount of $34,944
Hey all…May 1st is upon us and weather in the north is calling for a sports car! I just drove the 944 200+ miles with my car club last Sunday through northeast Georgia and SC, and it performed beautifully. My wife and I had a blast! I’m lowering the “buy now” price to $37,500 and will be leaving the car in the deal tank until Monday May 9th. If you’re looking for a fun car to drive immediately, this car is ready to go! BTW, you can put 2 sets of golf clubs in the hatchback area and take a passenger with you to the links. Not many sports cars car say that! Cheers

@Bruce944 my man bruce is on it
Hey VOGRIC…the timing belt was changed by the original owner on 9/18/2015 at 54,653 miles. I just checked the odometer and it’s at 59,425. Also, my mechanic looked at it when he was working on the water pump and said it looked great. BTW, the receipt is in the photo gallery.
What was the date of the timing belt replacement? Thank you

Car does not have headlight washers.
Hey Stringray….the warning light is on because the parking brake is on. Also, the leather is not faded. It looks great. Finally, I didn’t even know there is headlight washers. The windshield washers work fine. I’ll try and look tomorrow. Cheers
on the start up video the question mark light comes in the middle of dash is that a service light ? What is that for ? Also do the headlight washer work? Is the interior sun faded at all?

Unfortunately I can’t tell you much about the center reflector. The original owner told me the dealer put it on at the time of delivery in 1988. I am fine with it so never thought about removing it.
Bid in the amount of $8,000
Is the red reflective rear panel with “Turbo” on it easily removable?
The undercarriage is fine. I just sent 2 pictures to the PCar website that I took yesterday while the A/C was being serviced. They should be added shortly. The red light was added by the original owner. I can’t remember if he put an anti theft system in or just put the light in to make it look like he did. I think the later.
Appreciate the quick response, Bruce. With such a lengthy stay in New Jersey, is there much corrosion/rust underneath, especially on fasteners, exhaust pipes, etc.? Also, what is the red button on the center console in front of the shifter? There appears to be a red bulb on the left of the climate control unit I haven't seen on other 944s before, what is that for?
Hey Jono….the startup video was sent to PCar, I don’t know why it’s missing. Stay tuned. It’s a video after a six week period of no use. Also, the A/C was serviced yesterday. I wanted everything perfect. O rings on the compressor were replaced and refrigerant recharged. Receipt is in the gallery. Not sure about a drive video, my wife is out of town and I’m not real good at driving a standard and taking a video. Also, not going to drive the car during the auction. I don’t want an untimely event to occur. If you’ve ever been to South Carolina you would understand. The drivers are scary!!
Beautiful! I had a 1983 944, Guards Red with black cookie cutter wheels. Like an idiot I sold it when I moved across the country for a postdoc.
Can you post a startup and drive video? Also, when the A/C was serviced, was it converted to new Freon?
Good luck, I’m sure this one will go for a pretty penny!
GM Skwerl…I have not had any need to have the clutch serviced. The car car shifts as smooth as any car I’ve owned. Also, my mechanic drives the car after every service and recommends any preventative maintenance. He hasn’t said anything about the clutch, but I will check with him to be sure.
Really excited to see this auction. I had a nearly identical 951 in college and foolishly sold it for pennies a few years ago and have been looking to get another one just like it. I was too slow to respond to your PCA ad but am glad to have another shot. :-)
Can you comment on the condition of the clutch? Is it the original clutch that might need service soon or has it been replaced at some point? Any reason I should be hesitant to drive it from Hilton Head to San Antonio, TX?
Thank you for you interest in my 1988 944 Turbo. I will truly miss this car, but the reality is It’s replacement is scheduled to be built in the near future. This car is a blast to drive and I’m always amazed by the power it produces when you hit 3000rpms and the full 2bar boost kicks in. Also, the hatchback allows me to do daily errands or carry golf clubs without having to leave my wife home! Lol. Please feel free to ask any questions and I will answer them as soon as I can. Keep in mind I am an active retiree and no longer a slave to email!!
