Up for auction is this 1988 Porsche 944 Turbo S street-legal track car.  Starting life as one of the very few “Silver Rose” edition Turbo S models built for the U.S., this 944 has since been transformed into a purpose-built track car with upgraded brakes, suspension, a lightweight racing cockpit, and other performance modifications.  Since being purchased by its current owner in 2017, this 944 has received a new timing belt and head gasket along with all other necessary maintenance to keep the car in excellent running order.  Retaining its sought-after drivetrain derived from the Turbo Cup race car, this 944 is reported to be eligible for PCA SP3 class events and is now being offered by its seller out of Florida.

This 944 was previously refinished in red, although the original Silver Rose Metallic finish can still be seen in the door jambs.  The paint is said to be in fair condition with typical track-going wear and cosmetic imperfections (detailed images are provided in the photo gallery).  CARFAX shows front-end damage in 2015 and there are no further records or information available.  Exterior modifications include a front splitter, tinted windows, a tow hook, LED headlights, and a mixed set of Porsche Cup 2 rear and Turbo Twist front wheels.  The front tires are said to be in good condition and the rear tires are noted to have been replaced within the last 1k miles.

Inside, the cabin has been mostly stripped for weight savings, however, the original headliner has been retained along with the Burgundy leather and multicolor upholstery on the dashboard and door panels.  Sparco racing seats have been installed along with RJS SFI Spec 16.1 6-point harnesses (exp. Dec. 2021), a full roll cage, Sparco steering wheel, tire pressure monitoring system, and a Porsche 996 shift knob.  The A/C compressor, heater, and blower motor have been removed along with the rear window wiper.  The power door locks, turn signals, and odometer are also nonfunctional.  The mileage currently reads 68k although the seller estimates the true mileage to be closer to 100k.

Power comes from a 2.5 L turbocharged inline 4-cylinder engine rated at 250 HP and 258 lb.-ft of torque in its stock configuration.  The rear wheels are driven by way of a 5-speed manual transmission with a factory limited-slip differential.  New lifters and intake valves are said to have been previously installed and the engine timing has reportedly been advanced as far as possible without requiring new cams.  The suspension has been upgraded with LEDA coil-overs, Hyperco springs, and front camber plates as well as solid control arm bushings front and rear.  Stopping power has been improved with ventilated Cquence Performance rear rotors and Porsche 993 front brakes with Sebro drilled rotors.  The timing belt and head gasket were replaced under the current ownership and routine maintenance is said to have been kept up to date.  The seller also notes that the rear end was professionally realigned following a minor incident on the racetrack.

This sale will include a clean title.  A well-balanced transaxle race car that can be driven to and from events, this 944 Turbo S offers a fantastic value for any avid track-going enthusiast.

I've had a few inquiries about the daily drivability of the vehicle. No there is no functioning AC. However, if you want to add some creature comforts back into the vehicle one would need to obtain an new AC compressor and I still have the blower motor if the purchaser wants it. The AC lines and condenser are still installed as i never got around to removing them. It was also retrofit to run R134 since R12 is becoming increasingly harder to get.

It got bid just over my budget and the $35 at the end of all of my bids was for the hood struts that for some crazy reason had people knocking the car. I hope this little gem goes to a good home.

@jbelcredi I asked my tech and he had on his old laptop which had died back in Dec. I'm sorry for that.

  • confusedturtle (seller) 3 years, 9 monthsago

@jbelcredi I don't have any shop records of leak down and compression tests. I have done those on my own. I will attempt to get the maintenance records from the shop that I have been taking that car to since I bought it.

@BugKiller yes they are the same car. It was wrapped white with martini stripes for a time when I was actively being sponsored.

The car in the track vid appears to be white. Is this the same car as the one listed?
