Mercedes’ original Geländewagen, the W460 G-Class, was assembled almost entirely by hand in Graz, Austria. It features triple-locking differentials and rugged body-on-frame construction that established the G-Class as one of the most capable 4x4s of all time. This 1988 Mercedes-Benz W460 280GE is a rare short-wheelbase example finished in Astral Silver Metallic over plaid-patterned upholstery. Imported from Spain upon the seller’s acquisition, this early G-wagon was previously listed on PCARMARKET and is being offered for auction once again out of Florida.

This example is finished in Astral Silver Metallic (9735) and contrasted with a black front grille, front skid plate, rubberized trim, fender flares, and steel bumpers. Other equipment includes front fog lights, a rear-mounted full-size spare tire, and a single exhaust system. The seller adds that the slotted steel wheels will be refinished in black in preparation for the sale.

The cabin is outfitted with plaid-patterned upholstery spanning the seats and door panels, complemented by burl wood trim. Amenities include heat-insulated glass, a rear defroster, power windows, and an aftermarket head unit with Bluetooth connectivity. Metric instrumentation consists of a 180-KPH speedometer, a 100x/per minute 7k-RPM tachometer, an analog clock, and auxiliary dials for fuel level, coolant temperature, and oil pressure.

The 280GE is powered by an M110.994 2.7L inline-six, factory-rated at 156 HP and 167 lb.-ft of torque. Power is sent to all four wheels through a 4-speed automatic transmission and a full-time all-wheel-drive system with high and low ranges. Electronic locking differentials are also equipped at the drivetrain's front, rear, and center. Upon importation to the United States, this vehicle reportedly received an AC system retrofit to comply with U.S. regulations for Freon gas, along with a full maintenance service.

This sale will include a clean title.

The seller would like you to know: “I wanted to buy this car to renew and use it as my daily driver, but I had no time at all, and it is in perfect condition for the age; I’d rather have someone who really appreciates it to drive it.”

@Canadag I’m not exactly sure about all the details of the A/C conversion, but it was fully converted to an R134a system. I can tell you that it works great, even in the heat here in Florida.

Yes, both armrests on the Recaro seats function properly.

@surf2day Hello, thank you! I've driven the car just under 1,500 kilometers since it was imported to the U.S.

Yes, that is indeed a very small spot, and there is another similar one on the top of the driver's side fender. It's barely visible in picture 71, but it is there. Nothing major the car is overall in great shape.

Unfortunately, I don't have a paint meter available at the moment, but there are no signs of filler on the car.

  • aranagabriel (seller) 5 days, 7 hoursago

@Canadag The car was professionally refinished in its original Astral Silver Metallic color to maintain its outstanding condition. The paint and clear coat showed some sun wear, so the previous owner decided to have it refinished in Spain. There are no signs or history of accidents or damages.

The car was originally ordered in Aachen, Germany; however, it was never registered there. Instead, it was transported and registered in Spain on December 14, 1988.

Yes, I can store the car for you until January or even longer if needed.

This vehicle has no electronic locking differentials at the drivetrain's front, rear, or center, but it does have manual front and rear differentials. must be a mistake. Can you tell me what was included in the AC conversion?
Does the 2 arm rests on the front seats work without a problem? Sometimes the foam is broken and stay no longer in place.

Nice 280 GE example. How many miles has it been driven since importation? Also, there is some apparent oxidation bubbling under one if the taillights. Is this the only rust (surface or otherwise) that you have found on the body panels? Do you have any paint meter readings to show even with the repaint that no body fillers were used? Thank you 😊

  • Canadag 5 days, 11 hoursago

    Hello,
This G had a repaint before. Do you have any idea what it looked like before? Was it an accident repair, rust repair, or something else? It was not delivered new in Spain but in Aachen, Germany. Do you have any idea when it arrived in Spain?
Is it possible to store it till January (after the holidays)?

@classic4x4dotcom I just uploaded some documents from Spain, including the "ITV card." I noticed that the ITV card doesn't display any mileage. However, if you refer to the original bill of sale, it shows the original kilometers recorded when the car was sold to me.

@aranagabriel I noticed the EU pre 2000 plate denotes it originally resided in Spain and was initially registered in the Madrid capital region.

Spain is known for its detailed annual inspection booklets that would confirm the exact mileage. Do you have the inspection booklet? If so, can you post it?

Also, can you further elaborate on when it was imported and if you still have the import paperwork?

@Antonelli Thank you! Indeed a great truck. After purchasing this car and bringing it to the U.S., I took it to a local Mercedes Benz specialist named European Autobahn, for a comprehensive inspection. They thoroughly examined the vehicle to ensure everything was in proper working order and addressed any issues to make it an excellent daily driver.

Following the inspection, they confirmed that the car was in outstanding condition overall, clearly well maintained by its previous owner. Preventive maintenance was performed, including an oil change, replacement of the ignition cables, and new exhaust manifold gaskets. The A/C system was serviced, new headlights were installed, and a brand new set of tires was fitted, along with an alignment. A few months later, the front brake system was overhauled, with new calipers, brake pads, and lines installed.

The car is completely rust free, including the undercarriage, which is in excellent condition. The body is in great shape, just as shown in the pictures. This is a truly unique and outstanding 280GE.

I wouldn’t hesitate to drive this car cross country. It’s been a fantastic vehicle for me, and I’m confident it will be just as reliable and enjoyable for its next owner.

@aranagabriel Awesome truck. Can you expand on the 'full maintenance service', specifically what was done. Are there any outstanding maintenance items that you foresee? How's the rust on the truck? Anything really critical eating through the paint? Lastly, would you be comfortable driving this truck cross-country in its current condition? Thank you!

  • aranagabriel (seller) 1 week, 3 daysago

@EnriqueRicardo Thank you! I’m not exactly sure about the top speed, but it can comfortably cruise at 70-80 mph on the highway. It handles traffic very well, runs smoothly, and I can confidently say this based on my experience driving in Miami’s heavy traffic.

  • EnriqueRicardo (registered bidder) 1 week, 3 daysago

Cool G-Wagen. What is the top-speed? How's it doing in freeway traffic? Thanks.
