Introduced in 1984, the BMW E28 M5 was the fastest production saloon of its time. North American models were offered exclusively for the 1988 model year in Schwarz over either Natur or Black leather upholstery. This final-year example was selected with a Natur leather interior and features heated front seats, a power sunroof, a rear decklid spoiler, silver-finished 16” BBS basketweave wheels, and more. As one of the last hand-assembled BMW M-Series cars, this two-owner E28 M5 is now being offered for auction by the selling dealer out of Kansas with approximately 160k miles on the odometer.
Finished in Schwarz, this M5 features a center dual-tipped exhaust, a rear decklid spoiler, and silver-finished 16" BBS cross-spoke basketweave wheels with new Vredestein Hypertrac tires. The seller states the paint presents exceptionally well for its age and mileage, with only minor signs of road wear. A slight difference in paint finish is noted on a blended area of the left rear quarter panel due to an accident in 1994, as shown on the CARFAX report. Body damage has not been observed, and hardly noticeable rust bubbles are present on the underside of the front fenders. Detailed images are provided in the gallery.
The cabin presents Natur tan leather upholstery contrasted with a black dashboard, headliner, and door tops. M-specific tri-color stripes adorn the steering wheel, shift knob, and seats. Equipment includes a power sunroof, power windows and seats, air conditioning, cruise control, and optional front seat heating. All gauges and accessories are confirmed to be in proper working order.
The E28 M5 is powered by a 3.5-liter S38B35 inline-six, a naturally aspirated engine derived from the BMW M1. Featuring individual throttle bodies, it produces 256 HP and 243 lb.-ft of torque in stock form. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a Getrag 5-speed manual transmission and a limited-slip differential. The seller notes that the clutch has been replaced, the original A/C compressor has been rebuilt, the front calipers have been rebuilt, and the factory self-leveling suspension has been swapped for a standard suspension system.
This sale will include a clean title.
The seller would like you to know: “For sale is a 1988 BMW E28 M5. This is a clean title two-owner vehicle with 161k miles. The second owner has had it for about 25 years and only put around 10k miles on it in that time. I actually drove it 800 miles back to KS when I bought it from its previous owner. The E28 M5 is the FIRST M5. It is a legendary car nicknamed "The Wolf" for being the fastest production sedan in the world, capable of a 150mph top speed! These were all hand-built with the heart of the BMW M1 Supercar. They built only just over 1200 of these for the US market at an astounding $50k price tag! It is powered by the Legendary S38B35 3.5-liter inline 6cyl engine with DOHC and individual throttle bodies that put out 256hp on its way to a 7k RPM redline. 0-60 happens in just over 6 seconds which was blistering quick in the day! The power is sent to the rear wheels via a 5-speed manual transmission, and all of the power is put down evenly with a limited-slip differential. This BMW is in excellent condition inside and out and runs and drives perfectly. It has extensive maintenance records, including a fresh clutch and brand-new tires. There is not even a crack in the dash. It’s an amazing survivor. This is a blue-chip collectible that is only going up in value, and I feel it is actually undervalued currently. This car is shown by appointment only. Be sure to watch the very detailed YouTube video overview of the car. There is also a video of when I bought from the previous owner and drove home. This car has been exceptionally cared for and maintained over its life with only two long-term owners. This car is fully sorted and ready to drive anywhere. Send a transport or fly in and drive home and enjoy. Bid with confidence. This is a special one. A true exceptional survivor. Thanks for looking!”

I just uploaded pictures of the shop and parts receipts of work we had done. Notable items on AC. We shipped out our original compressor and had it rebuilt. It only had a small leak. I requested rebuilt to leave original finish. We also serviced the car with R12 that I have rat holed for my special cars like this. It is colder and works better. The car also went through a paint correction and looks amazing as seen in pictures and video. Getting down to the wire! I am actually sitting in the car typing this while being intoxicated by the BMW smell of the era. Lol. If you know these cars you know what I mean. Let me know if you have any questions! Good luck!

@2mAn thanks for your inquiry. I actually discussed it with my BMW specialist shop who did work for me on the car. He said from what he heard from the engine and how it was running, he deemed it not necessary. If you purchase the car, I can connect you with the shop and they could perform for you if you do not have anyone qualified to do it and would feel better before taking delivery. Let me know if you have any questions. Thanks!
@whitef thank was a great trip! Thanks for sharing!
I just looked through the picture gallery to see if I missed anything and realized I didn’t have pictures of the trunk. Lol. I just uploaded 20+ pictures. The trunk in this car is amazing! It has the original spare with Pirelli P700 tire that has never been on the ground. It’s remarkably still super soft and full of air. The tool kit is amazing as well. Be sure to check it all out in the picture gallery. The car also comes with a Bavarian Autosport car cover.

I had the pleasure of accompanying Bob on the trip when this was brought to Kansas, and drove the car a few hundred miles. This is a magnificent car that deserves to be in a collection.
With the previous owner's meticulous care, and Bob's through and honest description and documentation of the car, you can be confident that you are bidding on a great car.
@euroasianbob many thanks! Very helpful!
@euroasianbob Hello, do you know when the last valve adjustment was? I dont think I saw it in the receipts

@euroasianbob Understood thank you
@JMarion that first sentence should read I DID take pics of fenders. Made a typo.
@JMarion I didn’t take close ups of the spots on the bottom of the fenders. For some reason the photos are not showing up yet. I did it last night. I uploaded about 43 pictures. Maybe PCM has to approve them before they post? Ill contact them first thing this morning and re upload if needed.
@euroasianbob Thank you! Any chance you could post a couple of close ups of the rust on the fenders?

@JMarion I just uploaded a bunch of photos from underneath on a lift. They might still be uploading but should be visible shortly. Let me know if you have any questions. Thanks!
@r32fan I had to go back and watch the video and listen. It’s my shoe squeaking on the clutch pedal. Lol.

As I remember, these did not hit the US roads until 1989. My accountant had a 1988 535i that was his daily driver and when these cars came out, he leased one at Otto's BMW in West Chester, PA and put away in his garage as this was told to be the last M5 ever to come to the US. He drove once in a while and it was a wild ride. Not sure whatever happened to that car but was the exact same as this color combination.
Greetings Automotive Enthusiasts!
Thanks for viewing the auction of my 1988 BMW M5. I already did a big spiel on the “seller would like you to know” section. Let me know if you have any questions not answered in the detailed YouTube overview video and picture gallery. Will be adding more underneath pics shortly. Good luck and happy bidding!
@Emelin thanks for your interest! I will be doing a full underneath picture gallery on the lift later this afternoon and upload this evening. Can get paint readings too. Be sure to watch the YouTube video overview if you have not. Thanks, Bob
