BMW’s original high-performance 6-Series grand touring car, E24-generation BMW M6 was offered in the United States from 1983 to 1989 featuring a 3.5-liter S38 inline-six DOHC engine paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox and a limited-slip differential. This 1987 example is one of only 1,677 cars imported to North America and is finished in Royal Blue Metallic over Lotus White leather upholstery. The car has been modified with a Stebro Back Cat stainless-steel exhaust system, an Ireland Engineering big brake kit, Bilstein rear shocks (replacing the factory self-leveling system), a Z3 short shifter, coco floor mats, custom metal pedals, Focal K2 speakers, Cibie Parabolic H1 high beam and Hella BiFocal H1 low beam head lamps, and BBS Style 5 RC090 3 piece 17” wheels custom refinished by Elrich Wheel Works. It was purchased by the seller, its fourth owner, from a BMW enthusiast out of Arizona in 2015 and was subsequently treated to extensive refurbishment and an engine rebuild by the specialist at Vintage Sports Restoration. Showing approximately 84k miles on the odometer, this rare first-generation M6 is now being offered for auction out of New Hampshire.
The E24 6-Series was designed by Paul Bracq and the M6 version is disguised by a rear lip spoiler and a larger front air dam. This example is finished in Royal Blue Metallic (198) and features 17” BBS Style 5 RC090 three-piece wheels custom-finished with polished outer lips and grey-painted centers to match the dashboard. The Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires were mounted in 2016 at 77,816 miles, and the original 16” M6 BBS basketweave rims are included in the sale along with a spare TRX aluminum wheel. The seller states the hood, fenders, nose, air dam, rear valence, and mirror caps were stripped, primed, and painted in Royal Blue Metallic with a clear coat by Vintage Sports Restoration in Bow, New Hampshire in March 2016. The exterior and wheels also received an Opto-Coat Pro ceramic coating in 2017. The seller notes a 1.5” imperfection on the trunk, missing paint on the rear roundel emblem, and minor scratches on the hood, driver’s side fender, and roof. Detailed images are provided in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX report.
The cabin features Lotus White leather upholstery with matching carpets and a contrasting grey dashboard. Accessories include a three-spoke M-Tech steering wheel, power-adjustable seats, electric windows and mirrors, air conditioning, cruise control, an onboard computer, an M sport shift knob, custom drilled metal pedal covers, an aftermarket Sony Bluetooth stereo, six Focal K2 speakers, and custom gold/blue coco floor mats. The dashboard was reupholstered with new gray leather to match the rest of the interior's current ownership and some wear is noted on the outer driver’s seat bolsters and a small area on the center console between the shifter and handbrake. A new power antenna was installed in 2016 along with new dashboard lights and a replacement trip odometer. The seller adds that the low beam warning light appears on the dashboard occasionally, but the headlights are working properly. All electrical systems including power windows, doors, locks, seats, sunroof, onboard computer, and lights are fully functional.
Rated at 256 HP, the naturally aspirated S38B35 DOHC inline-six engine delivers power to the rear wheels through a Getrag 5-speed manual transmission and a limited-slip differential. An upgraded Stebro cat-back stainless-steel exhaust system was installed by a previous owner along with an Ireland Engineering big brake kit, Bilstein rear shocks and a Z3 short shifter. See the gallery for a detailed PDF showing all repairs and upgrades by mileage and date including a list of spare parts that will accompany the sale. The following service history was provided by the seller:

The seller would like you to know: “This E24 M6 is an absolute joy to drive on winding roads and on the highway. It cruises effortlessly at 85 to 90MPH. I have maintained the M6 to a high level with most of the system hoses replaced and preventative maintenance performed to head off any potential issues that may arise in a 37-year-old sports car. The Royal Blue Metallic color is fabulous and coupled with the BBS Style 5 RC090 3 piece 17” custom wheels it gets many compliments whether out to dinner or at a cars and coffee event. There are many red and black E24 M6s out there but Royal Blue is unique!”

Welcome to the last day of this M6 auction. I will be monitoring comments for your questions. Please see the new set of photos added. Note the excellent condition of the air dam. So many of the E24 M6's sold in the last few years have damaged and or paint chipped air dams. All the systems work well (lights, power locks/windows/seats/sunroof) including the AC. I have owned this M6 for the last 9 years and the pride of ownership can be seen in the photos, videos as well as the list of upgrades and maintenance. I will add more detailed photos of the engine. Good luck to all Bidders!

Uploaded more exterior photos showing quality of the paint and trim. Royal Blue looks awesome in the sun!
Note that the hood photo shows a white reflection (not a paint defect).

Just uploaded additional interior photos showing the high quality of the reupholstered leather dash, matching gray leather shift boot, and close ups of the interior door handles. Most M6 of this era either have a cracked leather dash or a vinyl replacement. The leather is fine to the touch and smells great!

Welcome to the auction of this well maintained 1987 M6! I’ve enjoyed this sport coupe for the past 8 years. This M6 runs and drives as new, whether highway cruising or working through the gears on New Hampshire mountain roads. The Royal Blue exterior really shows off the E24 M6 lines well. I look forward to answering any of your questions. Good luck!
