This 1986 Porsche 944 Turbo is said to have been built as a track car by SSI Motorsports of Parkville, Maryland, and features a replacement turbocharged 2.5L engine, a full roll cage, CoolSuit and fire suppression systems, Öhlins double-adjustable coilovers, dual fixed-back bucket seats, 928 GTS-spec front brakes, 18” BBS wheels, and much more. It was acquired by the seller in October of 2021 and has since been treated to new fluids, brakes, and tires in preparation for the upcoming season. A perfect choice for any driver eager to hit the track, race-ready this 944 Turbo is now being offered for auction by its seller out of Texas.

The body was recently refinished in the current white color and features a modified Hairy Glass front bumper cover, headlight delete panel, lightweight sunroof plug, and lightweight Lexan windows. The 18” 996 Carrera alloy wheels come dressed in a set of new Nitto NT01 tires. Additional images are provided in the gallery.

The cabin has been stripped and fitted with a full roll cage including door bars as well as a set of fixed-back Cobra bucket seats, Schroth safety harnesses, a custom fiberglass dashboard, CoolSuit and fire suppression systems, drilled aluminum pedals, a digital gauges cluster, and a Sparco three-spoke steering wheel.

Power comes from a replacement 2.5L inline-four turbocharged engine sourced from a 1987 944 Turbo. The engine is said to have been last rebuilt in 2009 and features an upgraded 944 Turbo S turbocharger, a TiAL 46mm wastegate, Pauter connecting rods, Vi-PEC V88 engine management system, and a Speed Force header. The rear wheels are driven by way of a 5-speed manual transaxle with a Spec six-puck clutch sourced from a 1989 944 Turbo. The suspension is borrowed from a 1987 model and features upgraded Öhlins double-adjustable coilovers with remote reservoirs, 700lb/800lb springs, Ground Control camber plates, Tarett Engineering adjustable sway bars and links, and Racers Edge rear control arm bushings. Stopping power has been upgraded with 928 GTS front calipers and rotors, a BMW 750iL brake master cylinder, stainless-steel brake lines, and a Tilton brake bias controller. Notable services include repairs to the engine compartment by SSI Motorsports following an engine fire in 2015, repair of the clutch release cylinder in 2021, and most recently new brake pads, fluids, and tires.

This 944 is offered on a bill of sale.

@Hagarr Thanks for the comments. Where you in the C5 or the AMG?

  • Hagarr 2 years, 9 monthsago

@Hagarr Forgot to mention my name - I am Brian and my buddy Brad was with me. Good luck with the auction!

  • Hagarr 2 years, 9 monthsago

Hey! I saw this 944T at Cresson couple of weeks ago. Don't know if you remember me and a few others came over to check out your car. Sweet build and looks like you were moving pretty good :)

I see all of these questions - I can witness this car runs well LOL

  • Jhouston1911 (seller) 2 years, 9 monthsago

@jatrock Yes, he knows everything about this car. I wasn't able to get off work today but I did send a buddy of mine to get the car compression test completed. Their report was 145psi across all cylinders. I will submit the report and service receipt with the garage name and phone number for your reference.

  • jatrock (registered bidder) 2 years, 9 monthsago

@Jhouston1911 I called Sloan this morning. He was very helpful.

  • Jhouston1911 (seller) 2 years, 9 monthsago

@jatrock The compression test is being done today. Sloan at SSI can answer any of your other questions.

  • jatrock (registered bidder) 2 years, 9 monthsago

@JHouston1911 - I agree with what the others are saying. Without a leakdown test I think you will be very disappointed with the results of this auction. There is just too much risk to not knowing the condition of the engine. And having the transmission checked and knowing when the Olins were last rebuilt will bring potential bidders a ton of peace of mind. Me included. I am interested in this race car but just need more information.

  • Jhouston1911 (seller) 2 years, 9 monthsago

@jangus35 I am sure your comment is well intentioned so I will entertain a response. As mentioned in a previous comment "Road course racing is just not for me I get nauseous with all the high speed turns". This is the reason for the quick sale.

  • jangus35 (registered bidder) 2 years, 9 monthsago

@Jhouston1911 went from being a novice (at best) ((his words)) to all of a sudden knowing how to handle all the power in the world.
@pm2207 is asking the right questions, and is completely in the right to ask more
How about you @Jhouston1911 do us all a favor, explain your reasons for selling so quick and provide all the other documentation needed on this sale and we can all live in harmony. no need to bicker, we're selling a vehicle, not fighting in Kiev.

  • jmitro (registered bidder) 2 years, 9 monthsago

Looks like a really nicely done 944 track car. I wish I could justify having another 944 turbo in my garage!

  • pm2207 (registered bidder) 2 years, 9 monthsago

@Jhouston1911 I'm asking polite direct questions. Just breath and try your best to answer them. I'm a serious bidder. Congrats you outbid me on the last auction.

I spoke with Sloan and the previous seller during the last auction.

I'm trying to politely get an account for its current condition during your ownership. Your selling it rather quickly after purchasing it which is concerning.

  • pm2207 2 years, 9 monthsago

Bid in the amount of $5,250

  • Jhouston1911 (seller) 2 years, 9 monthsago

PM2207 Really, you didn't ask that question last time you bid on this very car. I thought your name looked familiar. I know you're not a serious bidder so please keep your comments to yourself.

  • pm2207 (registered bidder) 2 years, 9 monthsago

@Jhouston1911 Compression/leak down numbers and hours on the drivetrain is standard information when selling or purchasing a track car.

If you can perform it and show proof(photos or video) of the numbers every bidder would love that information.

If you can post video of your track time in the car demonstrating you can heel-toe downshift and it wasn't abused every bidder would be comfortable spending more on it.

  • Jhouston1911 (seller) 2 years, 9 monthsago

PM2207 I am willing to, just not sure it is going to be possible. I am sure you will not believe anything I say, so I will need to find a shop to do it for me. Most shops in this area have 2–4 week backlog. If I can find someone to get it done than I will.

  • pm2207 (registered bidder) 2 years, 9 monthsago

@Jhouston1911 Does that mean your not willing to do the compression and leak down test?

  • Jhouston1911 (seller) 2 years, 9 monthsago

pm2207 I am not a novice driver; I have plenty of high horsepower cars that are all manual. I know how to drive, and shift thank you.

  • pm2207 (registered bidder) 2 years, 9 monthsago

@Jhouston1911 Honestly that scares me even more.

I could easily see a novice driver getting flustered on track and over revving the engine and performing ugly downshifts.

The car will still start, idle and drive around on the driveway with massively bent valves.

Compression and leak down test will show you didn’t have an oops moment.

They are not hard to perform with basic mechanic skills. Every competent mechanic can perform it.

There is multiple days remaining in auction to get it done.

  • Jhouston1911 (seller) 2 years, 9 monthsago

pm2207, this was my first and last track car. I am a novice at best and didn't touch what this car is capable of. There are no engine or drive train issues whatsoever on this car.

  • pm2207 (registered bidder) 2 years, 9 monthsago

@Jhouston1911 Are you going to ship the car back to Virginia for Sloan to do the compression and leak down test?

Test should be done after your last track event to prove you didn’t over rev the engine and bend the valves.

  • Jhouston1911 (seller) 2 years, 9 monthsago

pm2207 I have had the car since Oct last year and have only tracked it twice. I did 2 thirty minute sessions last October and 3 thirty minute sessions last weekend both at MSR Cresson. Road course racing is just not for me I get nauseous with all the high speed turns. Sloan at SSI can answer all your other questions in regards to the specifics of the car. He is easy to get on the phone and can tell you everything about the car.

  • pm2207 (registered bidder) 2 years, 9 monthsago

How long have you owned it?
How many track hours on the drivetrain?
    Why are you selling it?

  • pm2207 (registered bidder) 2 years, 9 monthsago

When was the transaxle last rebuilt? Who did it?
When were the Ohlins last rebuilt?
Do you have a log book?

  • pm2207 (registered bidder) 2 years, 9 monthsago

Any compression or leak down numbers?

  • Jhouston1911 (seller) 2 years, 9 monthsago

BScifers; From what I was told the engine was built in 2009 and then again after the fire in 2015. The insurance company covered those expenses. The best source of information on this car is the guy who built it. His name is Sloan with SSI, and he is a very cool cat and easy to talk with on the phone. This was their inhouse race car from 2009 to 2015. I purchased it from the guy (Race Instructor) who purchased it from Sloan. SSI actually maintained the vehicle up until I purchased it.

JSofro; I don't know if it has ABS. I believe that's what the brake proportioning valve next to the driver seat is for. I can tell you the brakes have never locked up on me.

  • BScifers (registered bidder) 2 years, 9 monthsago

Looking forward to watching this auction. Could you speak to the engine fire in 2015, but engine rebuild was last done in 2009? Thanks and good luck!

  • Radmartian 2 years, 9 monthsago

Good looking track car! Thank you for the videos. Very helpful

  • JSofro (registered bidder) 2 years, 9 monthsago
