Up for auction is this low-mileage 1986 928 S finished in the unique color combination of Moss Green Metallic over a Champagne extended leather interior. The Porsche 928 is applauded as Porsche’s iconic grand tourer. Additionally, this example is part of the second half of yearly production (1986.5), making it that much more special. @fastcargobrrr I spoke with the mechanics who works at the shop which did the initial work. He said that while he has no record of it, he is "pretty sure" they did a compression and leakdown test with good results. It makes sense because they did a lot of the work including the injectors and a new fuel pump.
@JNasty sounds like a beauty!
@theralphiej - Metallic black over cork, no roof, 16"phone dials, 5 speed. This car, whole thing needs to be painted. Should go to to shop next week.
@JNasty what color 78? I love those.
@theralphiej - I get it. Same POV as you. I did the rubber nose and tail on mine, as paint wears way worse than on metal, and paint meters can't read them. And that was it for paint. I got it w/ the manifold re-done. Whole top end job on someone else's dime. Trying to upgrade my 86 auto which I love to your 86.5 5 speed. Top of the first body food chain. Bought a super pure 78 5 speed slick top that is about to go into paint.
@JNasty oh got it, yes I considered it. That was all taken apart when I was in "I'm not touching the paint" mode. If I had known back then that I'd paint the roof and trunk I'd probably have done the manifold. I also should've done the hood and front fenders for the pictured imperfections, but then where does it end? I prefer original anything and I knew I would pick up more imperfections as this car was meant to be driven, not stored. So I just did the roof, trunk & cowl because the clear-coat was bad in those areas. I drove the car today, it is really fast and has an incredibly linear power band.

@theralphiej - there is some finish coming off the intake manifold. Not a big deal at all, but since you had it off for the gaskets I believe, you've been so particular about the car, some would have had it re-finished. Not stopping my bidding. Just wondering.
@JNasty the mirror adjustment module was replaced, it now works. As for the mounts, they did not recommend replacement and after removing the stuck tool, it feels good. From the shop- "We looked at the transmission and engine mounts on the 928. They have some wear but do not appear to be cracked or worn out. We did find a tool melted to the top of the exhaust that was contacting the shift rod. We removed the tool. I did not notice any movement in the shifter when accelerating and decelerating on a road test."
What do you mean by "redo the intake finish"?
@theralphiej - just wondering, any reason you did not re-do the intake finish when you were in there?
@theralphiej - thanks for the records. So, looks like trans mounts noted as worn, not replaced? And did the mirror adjustment module get replaced? Thanks.
Everything has been uploaded. I am here to answer any questions.
@JNasty it's incoming, most of the service records and receipts haven't uploaded either yet. That's just a few pages.
@theralphiej - the COA was not uploaded w/ the option codes, thanks.
@fastcargobrrr Hey! Thanks! I am going to ask a mechanic at the shop who did the initial work. The head mechanic (who was a walking Porsche encyclopedia) passed away, so some of the initial records were lost. Then I took it to Body Motion to do a ton of work (which I am having trouble uploading, but will get it sorted tomorrow). Body motion is a top shop in NJ.
You are correct, I did not do the other prerequisite work for the Porken chip . The new replacement MAF screen remains, but I did not put the later FPR on the car, was planning on doing that and an X-Pipe to make the V8 sing. The car is much faster than I expected in stock form, so I didn't rush to do it.
Hi! Lovely car. Two questions:
- Do the records you have include a compression test and/or leakdown test on the engine?
- I see the MAF was replaced in recent service. Did you get any of the other work done to prep for the porken s300 chip? This is not a deal breaker of course, but I would definitely plan to put that chip in, so I want to understand how much of the required/recommended prep work has been done - Ken's site lists MAF screens and an 87 or 88 Bosch fuel pressure regulator as required pre-requisites for the s300 chip.
Thanks!
@JNasty I took photos of all the docs. Will upload ASAP. The bumper rubber front and rear look great. The hazing I was referring to is that the paint looks older than the brand new paint on the roof. I probably used the incorrect term.
@stvictus I live in Brooklyn,NY but the car is in NJ, my office is in Asbury Park, NJ. You can message me and I'd be happy to bring the car there to show it.
I see NY plates but the listing says you're out of NJ - is the car currently in NJ? Can it be seen in person before the auction ends? Thanks in advance - great color!
theralphiej - thanks. No, COA and records not uploaded. That would help me get to a higher max bid of course. Is there ANYTHING on your punch list that you would have wanted to do/you would recommend that did not get done? Mechanical or cosmetic. Maybe sounds like shoot the rubber bumpers front and rear? Anything else? I've got an 86 and a 78. 86.5 is the dream to me (best of the first body style). And such a cool color.
@JNasty Thanks! 1)Yes, you nailed it the cluster was cracked, so I had Bob do that as well. THe dash leather , a pillers and glove box were redone as well.
2) I have the Certificate from Porsche listing the shocks and LSD, I sent it in but I guess it was not uploaded. I also have tons of service records to upload.
3) The carpets under the mats are the original mats and are in ok condition, similar to the trunk mat that I pictured. and the base carpet under that I didn't check, but I will check tomorrow.
4) Everything works! I did so much to this car with plans to keep it, but I am not in a position to be keeping the car. Cosmetically I addressed the roof peeling clear coat by having it professionally redone, as well as the cowl and the trunk. The rest of the car was cleaned and waxed. There are rock chips present as well as some haze on the bumpers, but that is just cosmetic. I did a lot more to the car than I listed any minor electronic issue/lighting issue etc was addressed. Feel free to ask any other questions you may have!

@theralphiej - carpets good under the mats?
@theralphiej - any open needs at all?

@theralphiej - nice car. 1) that is the Classic 9 pod cover right? Full leather did not include the pod OEM. Cracked Pod? And their dash too? 2) Where are you getting the sport shock and LSD options? Don't see the codes on the book sticker. I do see the rear AC on the car :)
Hey @URS6 Thanks! It was just replaced last month.
Beautiful example. Can you tell me when the Timing Belt was last replaced? Thanks!
