Successor to the 924 front-engine sports car design, the Porsche 944 debuted with improved suspension, brakes, and a new inline four-cylinder engine. Among the earliest and purest versions of the Porsche 944, this 1984 example features a 5-speed manual transmission paired with its 2.5-liter inline-four and was reportedly refinished in Mars Red over black upholstery. Having remained with the same owner for 29 years, this example is now being offered for auction by the selling dealer out of Florida.

This example was reportedly refinished in Mars Red, differentiating from its factory-specified Montego Black (LY9V) color. It rides on 15” ATS Cookie Cutter wheels dressed in Toyo Extensa tires mounted in 2019. Additional equipment includes pop-up headlights, integrated front fog lights, a black polyurethane spoiler surrounding the glass rear hatch, and a rear window wiper. The seller notes the bumper covers have been refinished in preparation for the sale, and cracking is present in the driver’s side door handle. Additional images are provided in the gallery along with a clean CARFAX report.

The cabin features black upholstery which spans the seats, center console, and door panels. Amenities include a removable sunroof panel with an electric tilt feature, power windows, air conditioning, and an aftermarket stereo. All gauges, electronics, and accessories are reported to be working properly, and the water temperature gauge is said to have been replaced in June 2023. The rear carpet shows signs of wear.

Power comes from a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter inline-four engine paired with a 5-speed manual transaxle, delivering up to 150 HP and 142 lb.-ft of torque to the rear wheels.  Standard features include four-wheel independent suspension, power-assisted rack & pinion steering, and power-assisted ventilated disc brakes. An aftermarket exhaust system has been installed, and service throughout 2016 included the clutch cylinders replaced. Additionally, the battery was replaced in 2022, and replacements since 2023 include the auxiliary fan switch, starter, fuel pump, strainer, and fuel filter.

This sale will include a clean title.

@theartofspeed.com The buyer should make sure the mechanic is experienced with the 944’s interference engine. There are lot of little particularities involved, especially with the belts. Even my guy who exclusively works on classic European cars and has worked on 944s installed the lower balance shaft bracket upside down while replacing the balance belt. Porsche didn’t make it easy to see which way it goes. BTW, I had belts/seals/water pump, hood struts, new tires, and steering rack replaced on my 84 for about $4000, including all parts but the steering rack, which I sourced from 944online. Hope this helps.
GLWTA, somebody give this beauty the love she deserves!

@P911ed Based on what was discussed previously it may need timing belt and water pump service. Replacing the engine mounts and dash cap would definitely help reducing the vibration and keeping the rattling sounds away.

@Spokayman Fortunately, as you can see on the service records, the owner took care of every issue that came up during his ownership. Not for lack of wil but possibly for lack of advice, some of the needed preventive service was not performed recently like the timing belt or water pump. Luckily he drove the car very little and he stored it properly through the years!
Following your advice in the prior auction I asked my mechanic to give me an estimate for timing belt, water pump and engine mounts(with all other related parts included like gaskets, tensioners, thermostat, etc). The number came up to $3,981.00. Please note that labor and parts are quoted on a wholesale basis then the price is significantly lower than retail. He is willing to extend the wholesale pricing to the person who buys the car.

Anyone know what maintenance is needed?

  • Spokayman (registered bidder) 10 months, 1 weekago

The only claim that is debatable @theartofspeed is “serviced as needed”.
The car seems to be in need of some important (and urgent) items as determined in the prior auction.
Otherwise it’s a nice driver quality example, and the prior history and records are a definite plus.

5 Speed 944 with only 48K miles, 2 owners since new with second 29-year old ownership. Part of a small collection, seasonally driven, always kept inside climate controlled garage. Serviced as needed with no expense spared. Comes with original manuals, keys and 30 years of service records.
Do not hesitate to comment or post a question, I'll reply quickly. Thanks for your interest and good luck bidders!

Any idea what A/C refrigerant system is currently on the car?

  • idealcheese 10 months, 1 weekago

I love the early 944s! Mine is also an 84 so maybe I'm biased ;)
Just a heads up to bidders: this car was recently listed on BaT and unfortunately didn't make the reserve, but there is a bunch of info in the comments there that could be helpful. I hope it fares better here!
