The range-topping R107 SL-Class roadster in the European market, this 1983 Mercedes-Benz 500SL is finished in Anthracite Gray Metallic over Black leather upholstery and features a 5.0-liter V8 engine paired with a 4-speed automatic transmission. Originally produced for the Canary Islands, it was imported from Europe to the United States as a “gray market” car in 1983. The car had been maintained by the same owner in Connecticut from 1984 up until 2024 when it was purchased by the selling dealer. Preserved with approximately 21k miles showing on the odometer, this 500SL is now being offered for auction out of New York.
This R107 is finished in Anthracite Gray Metallic with custom red and silver pinstripes, a black convertible top, and a removable body-colored hardtop. It features European-market headlamps, bright U.S. specification bumpers, chrome trim and mirrors, body side moldings, front fog lights, a rear trunk lid spoiler, a power antenna, and 14” Bundt alloy wheels dressed in 205/70 Michelin XWX tires. Detailed images are provided in the gallery along with paint meter readings and a clean CARFAX report.
Inside, this 500SL sports premium Black leather upholstery with matching carpets and zebrano wood trim. Accessories include a four-spoke steering wheel, automatic climate control, cruise control, power windows, an electric passenger-side mirror, a folding front armrest, heat-insulating glass, a rear window defroster, and a Blaupunkt Aspen SQR27 AM/FM cassette stereo. The seller adds that the mileage displayed on the odometer is accurate and supporting documentation is available.
This 500SL is powered by a 5.0-liter M117 V8 engine featuring Bosch KE-Jetronic fuel injection. Up to 237 HP and 296 lb.-ft of torque is sent to the rear wheels by way of a 4-speed automatic transmission. Stopping power comes from power-assisted four-wheel disc brakes and the suspension includes front double wishbones and a rear diagonal swing axle with coil springs and stabilizer bars.
This sale will include original import documents, owner’s manuals, a toolkit, a spare tire, service records, and a clean title.
The seller would like you to know: “A rare opportunity to own a true 21,000-mile 500SL that is essentially a 1-owner example with documentation to support.”

@Parkinbaby absolutely runs and drives beautifully
I assume the car runs well/normally with no known mechanical issues? Thanks
@Silversun262 it is funny how they vary with what's done during import. Congratulations on your new toy
Great car, I just purchased a California car imported in 86. Funny to see the differences. Mine kept the bumpers, added door rods and the beautiful tri-y headers were hacked up to add catalyst.
Bid in the amount of $10,250
changing bumpers is a 6K job...
@GrabberBlue good morning, great job on researching the car. Yes it was listed at auction a couple years ago and the seller was none interactive or responsive to any questions.
This car was acquired from the original owner and is now being represented properly and we are here to answer any and all questions you may have.
Happy bidding.
@Dj yes and euro bumpers would be an easy retrofit
Would have loved to seen orig. euro bumpers, rear jump seats, and heated seats as most of the euros had these. I suppose all but the heated seats can be added!
Recently sold on Facebook a couple months ago. In Nov '22 car was bid to 25,250 on another site but RNM. Interesting questions, comments and concerns from that auction which were not answered at all by the original owner. All public knowledge for what it's worth.
Import paper just added to the gallery showing the car coming in new with only 451 kilometers on it
Additional content has been added to the gallery for this listing.
@AndyL215 hello thanks for the questions
The engine does not have air pumps just factory egr.
No rods in the doors
Original bumpers were removed when car was brought in new. And are not with the car
Original speedometer is not present. The car was brought in new with just a couple hundred kilometers
No rear jump seat and headlight wipers were only on sedans in this period
Thank you!
Bid in the amount of $10,000
@wingless the photos of the soft top are in the gallery
@wingless thank you so much. I agree this is a lovely body style. And yes there's a spft top
Amazing car. Do you have the original small euro bumpers. Were air pumps added to the motor and metal rods put in the doors during federalization? Do you have the original speedometer? It’s hard to tell does the car have the rear jump seat option? Or wipers on the headlights ?
Gorgeous vehicle. This was always their best looking model. No soft top? Good luck w/ your sale!
