Up for auction is this 1978 Porsche 911SC Coupe finished in Mocha Brown over a dark brown leather interior.  Reported to have spent most of its life in California while under the care of the same family, this 911SC was purchased from its longtime caretakers by the seller in 2012.  The car has since been relocated to Florida where it has been treated to some considerable refurbishment including over $25k spent on new paint and interior upholstery alone.  It is now being offered for auction by its seller in Panama City, FL, accompanied by original books, tools, service records, and a clean title.

During the current ownership in 2017, this SC is said to have been completely stripped before receiving a high-quality full respray by the reputable specialists at Legends Classic Car Restoration in Panama City, Florida.  Mocha Brown (451) is reported to be the original factory color for the car, and the new paint is said to remain in excellent condition.  Detailed images are provided in the photo gallery.  During the time of the respray, the rubber body seals were replaced along with the hood shocks and sunroof cables.  The windshield is also noted to have been replaced in 2016.  Some noteworthy exterior details include chrome window moldings, front fog lights, and 16” Fuchs-style wheels with color-matched centers.  These wheels are currently dressed in Kumho Ecsta Supra tires sized 205/55 front and 225/50 rear.

Inside, the cabin is said to have been refurbished by Billy’s Trim shop in Florida with new high-quality brown leather seat upholstery and carpeting.  Coco floor mats have also been added along with a Pioneer CD changer that works in conjunction with the period Blaupunkt radio.  The tachometer and driver’s side window are noted to have intermittent issues, and the seller confirms all other gauges and accessories to be working properly including the factory sunroof.

Approximately 180 HP is derived from the air-cooled 3.0 L flat-six engine, which is fed to the rear wheels through a 5-speed manual gearbox.  The transmission is said to have been rebuilt and paired with a new clutch in 2003.  Some significant maintenance items were addressed in 2020 including an oil service and the installation of a rebuilt warmup regulator, a new starter motor, steering column bearing sleeve, and airbox pop-off valve.  A Carrera chain tensioner upgrade has also been applied. Service invoices will be included and the seller indicates this 911SC to be in strong running order.

This sale will be accompanied by owner’s manuals, tools, a spare tire, some service records, and a clean title. Just awaiting its next owner, this 1978 SC is ready to be enjoyed.

@WNieland Mike I just found a repair order, odometer 154424. R&R Timing cover, R&R Valve cover gaskets. I hope this helps.
    Thanks

  • WNieland (seller) 3 years, 10 monthsago

@PCARMARKET Thank you. We have added three photos at the time of repaint, there was no evidence of any rust, prior damage or repairs. All gaskets and seals were replaced during assembly.
    Thanks for your bids

@Lc911sc thanks for the comment. You are correct this is a well maintained and as original as possibly restored Thank you

  • WNieland (seller) 3 years, 10 monthsago

@PMason I am not able to determine if the chain tensioners have been replaced. Prior to my ownership the car was well maintained by the original owner evidence in the receipts that I received. I had a local Porsche mechanic look over the Motor and transaxle he felt no need to go any further. His opinion that the car was mechanically sound. Thank you

  • WNieland (seller) 3 years, 10 monthsago

@Mikeamoss what I’ve been told about the head studs is that the valves need to be adjusted periodically at that time the mechanic will visually look and see if there is any broken or missing stud nuts. There were new valve cover gasketsInstalled I’ll have to look back through the receipts to see exactly when that was thank you

@amissair The idle was sent by a Smith Motors a professional Porsche shop in Panama City FL.
Who also drove the car and stated it is in great running condition. Including clutch movement.
    Hope this helps.
    Thanks

Have the chain tensioners ever been replaced? This could be the most frequently asked question on the 911SC.

  • Mikeamoss (registered bidder) 3 years, 10 monthsago

Looks exceptional! Hard to make out but were cylinder head studs replaced (3/10/95) or engine rebuilt? Any compression or leak down numbers?

  • amissair (registered bidder) 3 years, 10 monthsago

@WNieland Thanks but I wasn’t asking about the idle. I asked about the tranny and clutch feel.

  • WNieland (seller) 3 years, 10 monthsago

@amissair I believe around 140k miles will have to view receipts tomorrow. Idle was set by a Porsche repair shop. Smith Motors in Panama City, FL I think you are correct about 2K at cold start and then drops to about 12K I will do a cold start in the morning and let you know.

  • amissair (registered bidder) 3 years, 10 monthsago

How many miles on the car when the tranny was rebuilt and clutch replaced? Is the pedal note light or heavy? Clutch engagement at mid pedal travel? Smooth synchros or balky first, second, and reverse? Thanks

  • tonyagc (registered bidder) 3 years, 10 monthsago

@WNieland I was watching the cold start video and can you tell us what the start-up RPM is and what the ending RPM is after 3 mins...It seems to drop down after getting warm, but it still seems to idle high? I noticed in the driving video that at start-up it seems to go to 2K RPM right away, is that normal for this car at warm start-up? Thanks!

  • WNieland (seller) 3 years, 10 monthsago

@Bp299 The A/C does not hold a charge. There was no rust repair on our 911 before being professionally painted by one of the industries best. The car was meticulously stripped and painted back to factory color. No seepage or leaks.

  • Bp299 (registered bidder) 3 years, 10 monthsago

Does the A/C work and has it been converted? Was any rust repair done when the car was painted? Any leaks or seepage?

  • WNieland (seller) 3 years, 10 monthsago

The COA is incorrect and the commenter is absolutely Correct, the color is mocha brown. We have also confirmed that the door code does in fact say Mocha brown if you Zoom in. We have now posted a closer photo of it into the gallery. Thank you for catching the error. Any questions, please reach out.

  • cwitt 3 years, 10 monthsago

@cwitt Typo - should read "most" not "more". Looks like moderator stripped the photo link I provided, but do a Google image search for bitter chocolate 911, and you'll see that the difference is quite obvious. Not trying to cast shade on this car, but rather make sure bidders understand that the photos may not be great at representing what I think is one of the best vintage 911 colors.

  • cwitt 3 years, 10 monthsago

Nice looking SC coupe. Maybe it's just the photos, but the paint color doesn't look like more Bitter Chocolate 911's.
